It sounds to me as if you chose one of the new style mesh avatars.  There's a rendering problem with them, as you've noticed.  Try using a standard avatar instead.  There are many to choose from in your Library's Clothing folder.

press

control + P

that open the preferances window

click the graphics tab on the left.

look for hardware setting button

click that

you see little boxes, all tick,

click on them to untick them

and then check if this has impove you look

if not try clicking one box at a time

and check if this has work.

my setting are all untick, and it work ok
