This sounds a bit strange. So... make sure you can hear any other sounds from SL like the typing or stream. Just to see if your speakers work at all.  Check following in your soundsettings (ctrl+p) tab Sound& Media, if the volume for sounds is up and checked. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Managing-your-parcel/ta-p/700113#Section_.12 . Also make sure, you didn't block the piano accidently. Right click it and then you still should have the Block option. If it says "Unblock", unblock it. For some unkown reason you might need to open the blocklist itself: People button, tab Block. In some cases some Instruments are set to "silent" and you need to activate the sound or choose a song. Also some have a menu to makethe volume lower or higher and even switch sound off. Please click you through to all of those settings and refer to the manual.

Edit: You said, you have the soundfiles that came with it. Are those in the Piano's content (right click, Edit and there tab Content). Or are those in the folder of the Instrument?! Any further questions or additions, please edit your post with Options-Edit top right corner.

Hi Annabelle,

Long ago I had a lovely piano. It contained the playing animation, but the music came in sheets that you rezzed on the music stand. You had to click the sheet music to start/stop the sound. You may have to do something like that with your piano, double check the instructions.

Also make sure that you've enabled "Sounds" in the sound control panel at the right edge of the viewer's manu bar. Sound from prim sources is not the same as sound from the environment, voice, media or button noises. You may have turned down the volume on sound sources. If so, turn it back up!

Good luck, and enjoy the new piano!
