how to find friends

The same way you do in Real Life.  Here's a step by step guide.

1. Go to where there are people. 
2. Peek at their Profiles to find someone who sounds like they might be fun to know
3. Say hello in LOCAL CHAT.  You can switch to IM later, if you want to speak to them more privately or if there are a lot of other noisy people around.  But it's more polite to begin in local first.
4. Start a conversation.  Comment on how much you like their outfit, or something you like about their profile.  Tell them something about yourself first, before asking them to give out information.  A lot of people in SL don't want to discuss their Real Life personal data with people they have just met, so try to stick to SL topics and DON'T PUSH.  Ask them questions about Second Life...where to shop, what clubs they like, what places they recommend.
5. After you've chatted a while, if they seem nice and you like them, ask if you may add them to your Friends List.

You may find it easier if you join groups or go to places where there are people who share some interest of yours.
