You can do that by logging into... my.secondlife.com ... using the same username/password you use everywhere else. The "Settings" menu on the left will take you to a page where you can upload a picture of your avatar (when you're happy enough with your look to advertise it! ;-), change your display name, tell about your SL self, indicate your interests, link to your facebook or other RL web page, take on or shove overboard a partner, upload a real world pic of yourself (caution!) and tell about your RL self (caution!).
