Probably the vases don't have faces inside. Geometry in SL is rendered only one sided. If you want it to be visible inside as well, you have to model the inside, too. With the surfaces normals pointing inside. There are some functions in 3D modeling programs, which are called Solidify in Blender iirc, or the Shell Modifier in 3DS Max which will create these faces easily.

Could be something else though.

So the good news and it seems like we all agree, you didn't do anything wrong :D.     Second Life doesn't support "double sided" (an option in Blender and most likely available in all other 3D programs). So you need to make an inside also as has been mentioned.

Aside from turning on Backface Culling and checking the direction of your face normals you can sometimes see that your mesh is incorrect in the SL  uploader window.

For a vase you may just want to continue the lip of the vase towards the center then extrude another set (or two or three) of faces DOWN inside the vase and add a face if needed to the inside circle.   If you make an ambient bake for your vase the insides will be VERY dark normally and it will look quite nice. No real need to reproduce the whole insides of the vase, just give it the appearance of being there. Save some triangles :)

So some ideas to work with. Have fun.
