How do I turn off the feature that opens local chat when I press any letter key?

Somewhere I checked an option to make local chat start whenever I type on the keyboard. I thought I wanted that, but I've changed my mind. I want to go back to using "f" for fly, etc. I have looked for the preference I changed, but I can't find it. I haven't been able to find the answer to this by searching this site either.
