That's a very good question.  Without any more details, all I can do is guess at possibilites ....

1. There's something transparent (a tree branch? a decoration of some kind?)  between you and the dance ball

2. The dance ball is not set to respond to the left click., so you have to right-click and select "sit"

3. It is a couples dance ball, and your partner is not sitting yet, so neither ball is activated.

4. The dance ball/machine supports multiple users, and all user slots are already in use by other dancers.

5.  You have checked the option in your SL viewer (Firestorm, maybe? In Preferences >> Firestorm >> Protection) to Block left-click sitting on objects.

6. You have an Internet connection problem, so your graphics card is not getting the information it needs to animate you. (Get off wireless now and reboot your router.)

7. Something else ..... ?
