With the limited information you've provided, all I can say is: lag. You're experiencing lag. It happens to all of us, pretty much. The first suggestion is always that if you're using a wireless internet connection, try using a wired connection instead. Wireless internet can have a pretty unstable connection.

What are the system specifications for your computer? It may not be able to handle the heavy graphics and other features of SL easily. You can try lowering your graphics in the SL menu Preferences.

Try this please....hook your laptop directly to the router in your home. Wireless connectivity may be causing you to lose Positioning Updates. Let us know if this helps...
