If you need a friend feel free to message me. Alsoyou don't really need a home to be happy in SL I was homeless when I first joined and was perfectly fine. I can help you find a place to set a home point if you want but basically you don't really need a house to play sl

Madeline is right...I didn't have a house in SL for many years and if a friend of mine wasn't renting me one at a very low price, I still wouldn't have one. There are plenty of things to do and places to visit without having a home.

However, if you look around, there are small apartments for about $50L/wk. And if you're that interested in a house, a premium membership gives you a small house when you sign up.

These days it seems it depends on how old you are in SL Noobia offers free homes for players under 30 days old.  There used to be a few islands that offered free houses but I'm not sure any  of those are still around. I've played SL for over  8 years many things trend for awhile and disappear. I would say hit search and see if you have any luck.
