I have been with SL from the beginning (Loved the first viewer!) I have just switched from Phoenix to the SL V3 version.

First thing that struck me was how much screen space I was loosing because of the size of the icons! Nowadays with so many HUDS you need all the space you can get. As a tech writer I realize the importance of white space but the margins on these icons waste too much space. (My ten cents worth:-)

Just turn them all off, I have a completely empty screen when I'm not chatting or building.

Yeah, turn them off, definitely.

If you mean the menu buttons, press Control-T and clear them all from your screen. Maybe keep a copy of the keyboard shortcuts handy for reference until you've memorized all you need so you won't have to go digging under the menubar.

If you mean those crazy icons that label each line of text in chat and IM windows, you want Preferences / Chat / Enable plain text IM and chat history.
