How to abandon land

1. Right-click on the land you own and select About Land. The About Land window opens.
2. In the General tab of the About Land window, click Abandon Land.

Take Ry0ta's excellent advice, but be sure to pick up all your stuff first.  Take furniture and other belongings back to your inventory one piece at a time, not in a single lump that may be difficult to rez later.

If you are a Basic member, don't bother. Just walk away. When you change your mind later and decide to come back, it won't cost anything and your stuff will still be here. If you actually DO cancel your membership (on your dashboard at secondlife.com >>> Account >> Cancel Membership), then it will cost you $9.95 to return and your stuff may have been wiped out anyway.
