Question

Following the instructions on http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mesh/Exporting_a_mesh_from_3ds_Max

I am running 3ds Max 2011 with up to date service pack

I am trying to upload and test mesh from 3ds Max to Second Life. I have downloaded and installed all the necessary OpenCollada Plugin, FBX 2011.3 plugin. My problem is the information gets annoyingly confusing when I get to

quote

[Export using Autodesk Collada using FBX 2011.3 plugin. If you are not using Max 2011, update to that plugin, or if using 2012, export to FBX, and use standalone 2011 FBX converter. The 2012 exporter was using a later version of Collada (1.4.1) than the SL software could read (1.4). That may have been fixed by now.] end Quote.

If my file is to be in the Collada .dae I don't get,

quote

[Click Z-up on the export window. Other settings are OK as default.]

end quote

and I don't get the connection between exporting dae file with FBX 2011.3 plugin. I have gone through that page daily for the last month and it makes less sense every time. I got some help on the forum with scaling.  a friend helped me find some textures that I could apply to the mesh to test the default mesh. All the other help on the subject if full of intellectual copy right information and links that look useful but are dead.

Yes... the problem is not on the SL side. A number of people use 3DS to export to SL.

You need to find one and ask what they are doing. I suggest searching the Content Creation forum.

FBX is a format conversion tool made by AutoCAD/3DS people. There is a standalone version that I've used for some conversions. I take it there is a plug-in for 3DS that adds some file formats to 3DS.

The SL import for Collada has some issues. Most of those are discussed in the SL Forum. I use Blender, so I don't know the gotcha's for 3DS. Dig around. You'll find them.

It's pretty hard to tell with LL at times but I think the clue is in the fact that they provided the functionality.  And sculpties.  And prims.  And animation support, TGA/PNG/WAV etc.compatibility, scripting and all the other ways of creating things that I've forgotten.

Mesh, from 3ds Max, is a very small part of the the creation opportunities available in SL.  If that one's being head-smackingly frustrating for the moment try something else :-)  How much creation have you done with standard prims, for instance?  It's very quick and simple.

What you are saying is you don't know and for me to give up. Probably best not to answer if you don't have solution. imagine you were me writing to a forum for a solution to a problem and getting a reply from someone that did not know the answer but gave me an answer that made me feel less enthusiastic. Please do not reply to this post as we have gone off topic and I would hate to wait a few more hours or days just to get into a mindless argument. Someone has an answer please wait for them to help me.
