How do I stop all the group chats from popping up in my viewer? I am using the latest SL viewer. I do not want the group notices to stop just the annoying group chats that keeps me away from several destinations.

Go to preferences (ctrl +p), tab Chat, set Croup chat to "No action"

Why does group chat "keep you away from several destinations?"

You can turn off all group chat in Preferences, as Sven described.  But I find that if I simply close a group's chat box that it does not open again, until the next time I log in.  This is a fairly easy way to keep the chatter down, but still be able to see if something is going on in your other groups.
