Hi Kartane,

"Shards" sound like the spikey protrusions from improperly rendered mesh. I'm going to guess (and it's only a guess) that you have an AMD/ATI graphics card, which is known to have problems rendering mesh using the current drivers. Disabling Hardware Skinning in Preferences->Graphics->Advanced may help. There is also a beta release of the AMD Catalyst driver that's claimed to work better. You'll find that here...
