I have had that happen when I have accidentally tried to upload an image that was in an unacceptable format or too large.  I have also found that the upload sometimes takes much longer than I expect it to, compared to say, Flickr or other sites that handle pics.  The Marketplace site doesn't show you any comforting progress bar either, so you can't even tell whether anything is happening.  I think I have probably bailed out too early a few times because I was impatient.
