Question

I am brand new to Second Life. When I go onto the world map and press teleport to open a location, I get a message back that I don't have an app to view the particular location. I tghen get taken to the Microsoft store where I am offered FileViewPro, which I have downloaded. But it does not solve the problem. I am signed in with a username, but if I click on the blue button (rather than the orange Teleport button) it takes me to the Create Logon page.

So I am unsure what's going on, and if indeed I have been "created" in my second life.

You're fine.  You're just trying to enter Second Life the hard way.  All you need is the Second Life viewer that you downloaded from here >>> https://secondlife.com/support/downloads/?lang=en-US  .  It's free.  Once it's installed, you just click on the icon on your desktop to log in.

You have been trying to log in from your browser.  That's technically possible, but not until you have taught your browser to recognize Second Life and its style of URLs (SLURLs).  To do that, you do need a plugin >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/slurl_proxy  .  Most of us simply log in with the icon, though.

Before you get much farther in SL, I suggest reading the QuickStart Guide >>> https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Second-Life-Quickstart/ta-p/1087919

Welcome to Second Life!
