I may have this posted in the wrong forum, but is there a dropoff/limit for a sound generated in-world?

E.g.; I am told a sound I made was audible from ~3500 meters away, yet I myself could not hear the sound with my camera panned 100 meters away. Am I missing something? I'd like to have a better idea of where the volume for my uploaded sounds should be.

Hi Fox,

This sounds like an unresolved Firestorm bug.

http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-12388

If you were running the LL viewer and other person was running Firestorm, this might explain it.

ETA: Here's an old post by Frank Linden that better explains sound rolloff than the wiki...

http://forums-archive.secondlife.com/120/5f/449/1.html

I'd always thought that 1.0 was the maximum sound volume, but that may not be true. If you're able to examine the script in the thing making the sound, check the volume parameter, which is second in the function parameter list, after the sound name.

The LL viewer has the same bug - https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-5383

All Fmodex viewers are affected by it. Older viewers using Fmod are not affected.

It's a weird issue though, it only affects certain systems and I don't think anyone ever got to the bottom of what those affected systems have in common. Most people seem to be unaffected by it.
