why am i a white blob and how can i get back to seeing my avi again?

i have tried clearing cache and changing some properties. for the life of me i cant figgure out how to see myself again. getting very fed up now

As you discovered, clearing cache will have no effect at all, except to make things run slower for a while until your computer downloads and rebuilds your cache from the servers again. If this is a chronic problem -- that is, one that seems to happen a lot of the time for you - it's quite possible that you have a lousy Internet coinection, so you are lot logging in fully.  If you have been using a wireless connection, avoid it if you can.  Many people have no trouble with wifi, but it is not supported by Linden Lab.  Also, reboot your router and modem to clear their RAM and consider replacing the router if it is more than three years old.
