  1. Madelaine McMasters reminded me from her post that we all have a fairy godmother or godfather in SL who made us the avatars we are today, who rescued us from newbie life. I would like to acknowledge those who helped me:

    1. Oboe somethingorother showed me how to work the Lucky Chairs through PopFuzz so I could get swag to add to my Free Dove items. I still have a rainbow dress that I got in a LC that wins me every ugliest dress contest I attend.

    2. Ireland Barrymore, probably disgusted by my bling and freebies, gave me my first 500L and took me shopping at Artilleri. Thank you, Ireland, person the longest on my friends list.

    3. A woman whose name escaped me took me and gave me 1000L to buy my first Gala skin. Gosh, I wish I remember her name....That was way too generous!

    4. Dirk Talamasca introduced me to Raven Pennyfeather. Raven changed my SLife and my real life by allowing me to work for her at RFyre and by being a dear friend.

    5. Heather Rau took me shopping, taught me about my shape, encouraged me to buy boy hair, and generally tolerated newbie me for a long time.

  2. In my SL a few well placed tips changed my SLife:

Wear a skirt shape with system skirts.

Make a copy of items before adjusting them.

(No photo.. heh. I forgot to save my work.)

Eyes are very important. Pay close attention to how they fit, look on you, match what you are wearing, etc.

    That bling? Not so good.

Girls can wear men's hair. It won't affect your hormones.

What were some of your SLife changing lessons?

  3. My problem is that when I am sitting up on a pose stand and trying to get a blog done, I also like some "noise" in the background, so I am listening in on group chat in these groups. As a result, I ended up as a moderator in several because.. well... I am sure the owners figure if they can't kick me out, might as well give me some responsibility. I have made a lot of great friends through the groups.

I think that group chat is a huge huge bit of glue in SL for many people and creates the networks and linkages we may not have otherwise. It allows us to discuss common interests from afar. That's why we are all so anxious to see chat lag go away. It seems they are working hard on this at LL.

As for group chat, some folks don't like the intrusion and get aggravated by the "noise." Phoenix/Firestorm and Builder's Brewery always ding open when I log on and I just close them. No skin off my back.

Finally, regarding group chat, I think some manners do have to be followed: !. Don't send more than 3 lines at a time--too spammy. 2. Don't advertise unless it's acceptable in the group. 3. Keep to the topic the group allows. Some of these are just cultural things in the group. Fashion Emergency lets us talk about anything typically and things are only moderated when people get aggravated. Hey Girlfriends is the same but a much smaller group of people it seems. Menstuff can get raunchy and Womenstuff is much nicer. Skin Addiction is fun as is Fabulously Free but the topics can be a little more restricted. 4. If it's typically a chatty group, either leave or endure but don't complain. Who likes a whiner? 5. Do NOT ask for money in group chat. Ack.

  4. Oo! I have seen some pants with attachments or drawn in uh.. features.

As for kilts, that's a good point. How could one be constructed so that the flat panel in front was right? Would it be a very slightly curved prim with flexi? You know the flexi skirts in SL kind of goof things up for a lot of designs. (I know my flowy skirts in RL don't have separate pieces like some sort of car wash.) A sculpty would be so wrong because.. in real life men's kilts move so nicely when they walk *sigh*

  5. So you want wavy short or curly? Have you seen Dura? Also it seems that Branson Twine's blog shows a variety of men's hair.

You can always try women's hair too ;) I ran around in men's hair a long time after my friend Heather Rau said, who cares? Go for it!

  6. That's gorgeous, Thereaver!

I would say that one of the problems I have with the SL avatar sometimes is the nose..I just can't get it to be right for an African-American or East Asian look that I want. Not everyone has a pencil thin nose.

  7. I appreciate your comments for sure. Would hair bases for men of color work? I have seen some braids close to the head as hairbases or simply short curlier cuts for African-American men. I am not sure what Latino men have for hair that is not available... can you share more?

  8. At the threat of exposing myself (and others.. hehe) to shame, I am showing you early looks from two of today's Fashion Experts..

    First me, from May 2007:

    harper newbie.jpg

That was in my pretty Gala Phoenix/Gala skin with hair from Elikapeka Tiramisu/ETD, my first dress from June Dion/Bare Rose and shoes from Sarah Nerd (which blinged!) (Think about this--these folks are all STILL here!)

I was always a redhead. It just suited me. It wasn't until I started my blog that I tried other colors and it still took me a while to get used to being blonde.

This is a photo of Frolic Mills from December, 2007, that I found last night. He had already adopted his handsome silver-haired look and dark good looks (in front of a build by Scope Cleaver for, I think, one of Frolic's first BIG fashion shows):

Oh boy, 2007. We are OLD. ;)

Let's see your SL childhood looks. How are they the same and different today?

  9. Excellent points. I know that Ramses Meredith at Egoisme has a new skin with some of those factored in--like a shaved eyebrow on a tattoo layer, more body hair, etc. But some of the detail of the body would be fabulous on a body-length tattoo.

  10. The guys from Menstuff wanted me to post something. I am gonna ask you guys, what would you like more of in men's fashion?

My friend, Mr Oh, suggested he would like more interchangability. Specifically, it frustrates him when he can not wear a shirt by one maker under a suit by another maker either because lapels are stuck together to collars or layers can't be used together.

What do menswear makers need to keep in consideration?
