I bought a mainland 512 for 240L. Can't get much cheaper than that. And no rent!

Yes thats great...congrats ;) However..mainland does not suit everybody, it comes with its own problems and issues (much of which you will see written about here in these very forums) There are nice bits of mainland, but even they can turn into ugly ghetto's in a heartbeat...no regulations about what or who can build..neighbours who encroach on your land..and lag lag lag.

One day you have a view..next day its a neon night lcub or a mall outside your window. Maybe a breedables ranch rocks up and then you cant move...if the sim gets a problem and needs a restart..you cant just ask your landlord...on mainland, the landlord has to ask Linden labs..and then wait..and wait a bit more. Private estates dont have too..youll also find by looking around some really good reputable landlords...who will do a lot more for your dollars than LL ever will.

  2. Hi Ms Shy !

one more thing to consider is...renting a fully furnished sky home..it might cost say 100-150 per week..but have all the kit in it, rather than you having to buy/supply your own. (some also give a prim allowance so you can personalise it)...

Plus if you rent from a private landlord, as opposed to LL direct...look for a landlord who gives added value ie: live help & assistance. A private estate may also give you lots of extras, like landscaped/themed areas, activities laid on, areas you can use for relaxing/inviting friends over ...beautiful beaches...forests...boats & jet skis to play with...etc etc

Hope you find what youre looking for !

  3. I like to go to the events...you know like the black market..fashion garrett etc etc...but when I land..and I look around..and all I see is these type of body shapes in the advertising boards, I just leave.

Its not just because I find the "look" unappealing (although I do !) its because its so far removed from what my look is like..I have no idea what the clothing/skin.tatts etc would look like on me.

Im really really hoping this fad dies out soon.

  4. Thanks so much for providing the Free Dove..it really is a fab place to send new people and old !

I ventured over after Talena @ Pink Label told me sometime ago that everything had been updated...glad I did because I picked up some really lovely items to blog and get the message out !

Congratulations for keeping it alive & kicking for 7 years !

I am a true beginner in land owner/rentership. The parcel owners that I am renting from speak French & the translator only helps a little. Can anyone help me get started? Please Please Please...

I will be inworld by 7pm SLT tonight. I would desperately love to meet with someone who could walk me through the steps.

    Hello ;)

read this , it tells you how to do stuff with your land :)

  6. I prefer mod not resizer in most things, apart from belts & jewelry. A while ago I bought a maternity blouse..it looked sooper pretty, but when I tried to use the resize script it just ballooned..and left the natty bow at the bust area behind, embedded forever in my bosoms.

Such a shame and consigned to trash, all for the want of being modify. Oh, and I did leave a review on the market place, saying that I really loved the item, but couldnt use it because of the above issue. They contacted me asking me to explain..so I did all over again...then they asked me for more information...but after two attempts to explain quite fully..I kinda gave up :matte-motes-yawn:

I live on TeaLeaf and next door is my store on Muskeg. It is on a protected road. This area was just lovely. I was so happy here. It was beautiful and not ruined. The community seemed to care. Well, all that has changed recently.

All of a sudden, new people moved in and only care about themselves. They are using way too many resources. The lag is so bad, I can't MOVE. I have a store there and to move is a nightmare for me. Plus, I have 1/4 sim, with house and skyboxes where we work.

Looking around, let's see, I have a "garage" with cars spewing out, that NO one rides. Total waste. Lo and Behold, a HORSE TRACK and about a million horses to go with that. Oh, and new is 30, yes 30 skyboxes going straight up from 500 meters to 3000 meters, all rentals and ugly.

Oh, the lady with a house full of 'scripted' maids. But what really makes sick is the "slave quarters" filled with naked women behind bars that moved in. Unbelievable.

Don't forget the club down the road.

There used to be like 10 people on that region and now there is 50 at any given time.

Linden Labs checked the regions and said the temp rezzers were a problem but otherwise, they felt the region was running fine. They told me to talk to my neighbors. Right.

Until LL charges people by the resources they use, it's just no fun to be on Mainland. It's so sad because it was so charming there.

Ah the joys of mainland living...sadly this is what can happen...mainland can change its theme , appearance etc in a heartbeat...I feel for you truly...it might be worth talking to your new neighbours but I wouldnt hold your breath for a positive result. Maybe wait them out? They might go as fast as they came and surely..if their lagtastic antics are affecting you, it must be them also no?

.  I know some SIMs do it all the time, but I think its just a nervous psychological tik of some sort.

No its not a nervous tik of some sort...homesteads share space with several other sims..if they are lagtastic, restarting your homestead pushes to share with others - which hopefully arent so laggy and your lag will cease.

Same with full sims, just less sharing than homesteads.

    hope that clarifies for you

buy mainland and you won't have drama isues. sorry but that is exacly how it is.

I own private estates, we dont do drama...I see plenty of drama about mainland because of issues relating too (and this is not exhaustive)

Littering, no covenant, overhanging trees etc. fugly builds.irritating neighbours, sim restarts needed that you cant do without LL assistance...lag lag lag...over crowding by breedable lovers, resource hogging...and many many more..all that Ive read about hjere on these forums (and other forums)

The key is to find a good landlord, established over many years. Dont by guided by price alone and make sure youre going to get an enforced, policed covenant.

Im not saying there arent mainland ladnlords who operate their sims well...but it certainly is not the case that private estates are all bad guys either.

Since some people have trouble reading, it looks like it falls to me to help you out. Try learning the ropes in low-prim building. Then when you have enough products, get a shop.

Im quite adept at reading thanks..and replied noting the subject title..."Looking for a lowskilled job"...the OP then lists modelling..which is what I replied too...

I've been in SL for 9 months, and even though my username is hahaha83 I like to go by the name of Ember Jones.

Comment below or message me inworld for more info on me.

A modeling job would be something that interests me, and until I learn the ropes and become higher skilled, I would do it for free. If you are interested in hiring me please contact me inworld

I would be fine with doing an inworld job interview but we wold have to figure out a time.

    Resume:

Name: (Hahaha83 is my username) Ember Jones is my display name.

Looks: Quite tan with brown eyes and dark brown hair. I have the newest shape from Juicy.

AO: Divine Girl from Vista Animations.

NOTE** I tend to be very busy in RL

You might want to rethink modelling as *low skill* employment...if youre thinking of doing it properly that is.

Also if youre going to be SO busy in real life...why waste yours and anyone elses time by tryin to fit in any work...seriously..just buy some lindens

    Hello,

i am thinking about getting one of those boxes with full perm clothes for reselling. Are there any rules?

Should i set them to no mod/no copy? Or better no trans? And what about the prices? Can i sell them for 100 L? Or lower?

And should i mention the names of the creator(s) too? Like... "clothes by..."?

Before you splash any cash...check the market place. If you go to *apparel* then choose say *womens outfits*..then select a price range...0-10L would be good for this exercise.

You will see a huge amount of people doing just what youre thinking about already.  The only differences are :

    1) A few hardy souls have removed the gear from its boxes and taken really bad photos of themselves in it

    2) Some sell it full perms, some dont

    3) Its priced anywhere between 1-10L, you really wont get more than this

Seriously, Business in a box type ventures wont pay off...as mentioned before its widely available free all over the grid, plus its not very good gear, you can find better in hunts & freebie malls.

  13. And lets not forget.you do not have to be a premium member to have a home or rent a parcel of land . You can choose from literally thousand s of themed private estates, some will rent you a furnished home with personal prims, or rent you a plot of land to do your own thing.

Private estates , especially those run & managed by good landlords offer a lot more than mainland ie: a covenant or set of rules for all people living on the sim to abide for, unlike mainland where its mostly uncontrolled and you can end up enduring all sorts of really ugly builds on your doorstep.

This would be me, I used to have a beautiful sim and rezzers and all that fun stuff but with the search being so bad over the last couple years I've given up. So now all my homes are only on the market place and there all cheaper then your favorite outfit of clothes which you didn't get to try on before you bought them. Its kinda strange to me that people will spend 1000's of linden on clothes based solely on a photo shopped picture. But wont spend 100 linden on a building based on a picture.

hmm I see your point, however unlike a building where its totally useless to the buyer if a) it doesnt fit the plot (and no details given on the MP to help you guess b) is no mod, unlike clothing which a lot of it is.

I wont buy a building unless I can see it inworld and garner a notecard with info all about the build etc on it.

  15. Grace Winnfield wrote:

This is a frustration I have had for many years now.  Each and every time I go to buy a new build I discard half of my choices on Marketplace for lack of two simple things..1.  the ability to view a model of the home at my convenience.  2.  Dimensions &/or prim count.

Now, I understand that land in world is not cheap if you are starting out.. however... you will sell LESS if you do not allow customers to see the quality of your work.  I am certain that your creations are beautiful.. but photos simply cannot show me perspective.  I have spent hours in the past searching for a place to see your builds in world.. I look first for a "see in world" link.... which many times leads me to abandoned land, drops me out of the sky, or places me into the middle of a home or some other shop.  When this happens I look to your profile for a hint as to where i can see the build..... sometimes you sell other things.... and other times I have the pleasure of viewing your role play limits.. sigh (insert sarcasm).  When i see, "IM me to see a sample of this build"  I want you to know I am unlikely to wait long enough for you to be in at the same time as me to actually do this.   On to problem 2.  I simply will not buy something without knowing if it will fit on my land.... period.  So make sure you tell me how big the thing is!

    ON TO SOLUTIONS

    1.  a.  If you cannot afford/ or are simply too cheap to have in world land to view your lovely creations  MAKE A DEMO.  The demo can have demo written all over it.. or perhaps buy a temp rez script that deletes the build after 5 or 10 minutes.  Let me buy the demo and view it in world.. Problem solved.  I make bridal gowns... the cost of them is not cheap... people would NOT buy my gowns without a demo so why would they buy an expensive or even inexpensive build without a demo of it.??? hmmmm?

         b.  If you do not have an in world store any more... change it in marketplace please.  As much as I like to explore I do not like falling out of the sky.  LOL

    2.  Measure your build.... let me know how big it is.. how many prim it is.

I offer all of this as a customer.  Please know that I would probably have bought some of your builds IF i had been able to see them.  I probably buy at least 5 builds per year.... sigh.  I'm sad that i can't see them all because some look absolutely lovely.  You will sell MORE if you make it possible.. ... promise.  (unless of course you are not showing me because you know your stuff is crap... lol)

^^ ditto on all the above...I dont know if its the poor economy.and people selling up/only using the MP..but sooo many times Ive tp'd to a location in a creators picks to find myself in someones bedroom/home/under the sea/stuck in a wall...~le-sigh~

  17. Hello !

youve had some great advice so far...but I will add, there are SO many hunts on in Secondlife at the moment, that have free skins, shapes, clothes etc in them. You dont really needf to go buying much at all ! Some hunts the prizes are free, some you pay a nominal fee...its a great way to explore new stores and see what their creations are like. You might pick up a skin in a pale shade that you love, so perhaps might wish to buy in a different skin tone etc...Ive found some very pretty skins lately that Ive kept from various hunts.

Here are a couple of web pages for you to look at.

  20. I have a damaged nerve in my arm...and some days...it makes typing really very painful..so for particular friends (as in those I actually know and have known for a long time) I will crank up skype to communicate and save the stress on my arm & hand.

The rest of the time I prefer my SL silent...occasionally in my SL home I will have the enviroment noises on (I dont have a radio or media on purpose) I like typing..I love written words...

My SL partner is Italian...english isnt his strong point...voice is just a slow way for us to communicate over typing. His written english is probably better than mine actually.

I couldnt bear it if I was forced to turn voice on and have to listen to every tom dick & harry droning on to be honest.

We might take a look back into SL's history here:

Homestead sims were originally named Open Sims by LL, and they were intended to serve as additional sims for owners who already had a full sim. They were never meant for shops, clubs or even rentals, but for the sim owner to add a park or a lake or something with only small usage of scripts and very little traffic. What we see nowadays happening with the homesteads is in fact "abuse", as Jack Linden (remember him?) called it. The result was a steep increase in tier fees but unfortunately not a technical solution to get rid of the lag problem.

A problem all we abusers had created.

I believe they were first labelled *void* sims....and then open spaces. Your right about how they got abused...they were never intended for rentals or clubs...or even as living spaces...just waterways or light landscape greenery. Then it came to light how they were being misused and wham..we all got lumped with a higher fee for them regardless if we were doing it or not.

  22. This also puzzles me..I could understand it when they had offices in the UK..but now they dont. Makes it kinda unfair that I and others have to pay that extra 20% on sim tiers each month...never seen a complete answer to this much asked question either (dont expect we will get one)

Sometimes i walk into stores they look pretty much like a house with 2-3 levels and like 20 small rooms where it takes you forever to find things. Its driving me nuts. Why would they do that?

Wouldnt it be easier if they had just a big hall like (think it was Gothicatz?) where you can find things more easily?

It depends on why Im shopping as to how I feel about store layout...if Im mooching I really enjoy the sort of stores that have lots of places to look in..or maybe a whole shopping area that has winding passages and tiny interesting shops to go into ..if Im on a mission and need something fast, I prefer a well laid out spacious area, with clear signage and teleports if I need to get around quickly..my personal preference is the quirky stores though, like !Go!..exceptional build and interesting to wander about....
