  1. Does anyone know how to get the worn seat effect on the leather texture, below?

I got this texture in part of a build kit. It's a sample texture for the seat of a stool. I have the shading maps, too, but here's the thing. The shading map doesn't have the darkness that's in the middle of this texture. That darkness in the middle gives the finished stool seat the illusion of indentation and wear from use.

Does anyone know how to create this effect on a texture?

Since it's not part of the shading maps I'm guessing it's either another texture or something you can do in photoshop or gimp (I'm using gimp.). I tried dodging and smudging, but that gave an effect that was too rounded and inconsistent. The darkness in this texture looks more like a gradient fill or something.

Sorry. I know this is a bit of a wonky texture question, but I'd really like to know how this effect was done. I'd love to have my seats and cushion look more realistic.

  2. I'm working on a piece of furniture that I might actually try to sell. As a final step, I think it would be nice to give customers the option to change textures. It's a bit beyond my programming expertise to make a texture HUD, myself, so I went looking on the marketplace. That yielded a few options.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a full-perm texture change HUD?

  3. FABGlitter Women's Club needs DJs! Most of our openings are for the 6-8 PM SLT shift, but if that doesn't work for you, check in anyway; there are others. Experience is always a good thing, but we don't mind training you if you're enthusiastic.

FABGlitter is a club for women, for any reasonable definition of "women." Lesbian, straight, and transgender avatars are all very welcome. This includes our DJs, too; sorry, male-identified men. The club is warm and friendly, and especially welcoming to those who might feel on the fringes of life.

DJs work for tips and stake their own share of any contests they run.

If you're interested, please contact Samantha Poindexter or Myra Wildmist via IM (offline IMs are fine). We hope to welcome you to the FAB family soon.

  4. Is there a way to export all the shape measurements - height, head size, etc. - to a file or a notecard? If not, is there a gadget out there, somewhere? I did a quick MP search, but didn't find anything.

I'm playing with my shape, again, trying to create something more proportional. It would be nice if there was a shape scaling tool.

  5. I had forgotten that I started this thread. Let me say, unequivocally, DO NOT BUY THE HENMATIONS HUD!

    There. Hope that's clear. : )

I had the Henmation HUD for several months and it worked fine. I was pretty happy with it. But, then, one day it stopped working. It turns out the website the HUD is dependent on stopped working. I contacted Henmation; no reply. I tried repeatedly to get in touch with the owner, their support, etc., but no reply.

I was left with a non-functioning device, and no way to fix it. If you look at the reviews of the product on the marketplace, you'll see a lot of people ended up with the same problem.

I will never buy another thing from Henmations.

Sorry, I forgot about this thread and that I didn't update it.

  6. Just thought I'd finish up this thread by mentioning a few other places where I've found animations for my sofa. It might be helpful for anyone else looking for animations.

I did buy some animations at Zambooki, nice place. I also bought animations at Anja, Sylva, RNP, and Happy Dispatch. Happy Dispatch has some really cute animations, but I don't think they're producing any new animations for SL. Of the places I found, Sylva and RNP are still actively busy producing new animations.

Helpful Hint: I found most of these places by editing furniture with animations I liked, then looking at the properties of animations inside. If you look at the profile of the creator of the animation, you can usually find their store.

  7. I'm pretty sure the OP is referring to a particular collection that has been available in all the freebie stores and elsewhere for as long as I can remember.  The creation date on my copy of the box they are in is April 2007.

Yes, that's the collection I'm referring to. I got the box at one of the building schools, but I've seen it all over SL.

This is such a fun and interesting discussion. While it seems there are things that are public domain for historical reasons, they're probably pretty old items.

If I decide to use anything out of this box, I'll make sure to contact the creator before I do. I'm getting less inclined to use those poses, though. Some of these poses are perfectly fine for simple sits, but I'm leaning towards buying all new ones. These poses are in a lot of furniture in sl, to the point where they're overused.  I've found a few stores that have some basic, full-perm sits at reasonable prices, so I'll probably end up supporting the creator community. :matte-motes-smile:

I might check out YadNi's just for fun.

Thanks for all the information, everyone.

  8. I'm building my first piece of furniture and I've started adding sits to it. I've found this free box of poses and animations, which seems to be all over SL. It's usually called "500 Poses and Animations".

For the most part, I'm buying animations from merchants - they're usually better animations - but there are a few animations in this box that I think I'd like to use, and some others that I might use in the future. I'm a bit sensitive about violating IP rights, so even if these things are readily available for free, I don't want to use something that someone else might have stolen. I did send an IM to a couple of the creators of these animations, but no reply, so far.

Is there a way to know if something like this is in the public domain?

  9. Does anyone have any suggestions for where I could buy full-perm poses and animations for furniture?

In particular, I'm working on a sofa and chair. I'd like to add some nice female sits to both. I'm especially looking for female sits, because I've notice a lot of "female" sits in furniture are fairly masculine. I don't sit with my legs spread. : )

I did find one place - RNP - but I'd like to find some other places. Marketplaces searches bring up way too many places that aren't pertinent.

    Thanks for any help

  11. So after all of that a friend of mine who also DJs recommended the Henmation Dance HUD. After looking at all the options, I bought it.

    https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/DANCE-CONTROL-HUD-V3-ADVANCED-DANCE-HUD-SYSTEM/1488726

It was more important to me to be able to invite more people. 10 should be enough, which is the limit on the TIS HUD, but I like being able to invite more if needed - the Henmation HUD allows for up to 30 invites.

The web configuration is nice, too, but a bit slow. However, it's much more intuitive than dealing with cards and less prone to mistakes. It was very easy to organize my dances and it only took like 5 minutes.

With the couples dance option, the TIS HUD still looks good if you're looking for a personal one. But for DJing I felt the Henmation was a better choice.

**Don't buy the Henmation Dance HUD. Please, see my follow-up response that follows later in this thread.**

  12. I'm finally looking for a dance HUD. My primary need is I'd like to organize all them dances into styles and easily call them up. For example, I like to put my latin, techno and hip-hop dances in separate categories. It would also be nice to invite at least 10 people, since I DJ, sometimes.

I'm currently looking at two HUDs, the Romah and the TIS HUD. I've linked them, below:

    https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/PROMO-ROMAH-Dance-HUD-190-Animations-LIMITED-EDITION/4068388?page=5&product_reviews_sort=rating_value|asc&utf8=%E2%9C%93

    https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/TIS-Fusion-Singles-Couples-Dance-HUDChimera-Basic-Version/2877616?page=2&product_reviews_sort=rating_value|asc&utf8=%E2%9C%93

Of the two, the TIS looks a bit better, but the cost of the Romah HUD is appealling. I'm not sold on either of them, yet, though. I've been told the dance animations in the Romah are all freebies, so that's not a factor.

    Any other recommendations?

    Thanks much

  13. Hi, Penny. Thanks for the information.

If I understand you, properly, you're using "head" as a ratio/propotion measure and applying it to human ideals of height. For instance, I could be 16 feet tall and be 8 heads if my head is 2 feet tall, but you're applying this ratio to the range of "normal" human heights.

    Do I have that right?

I would think these ratios might vary with cultures, but I understand how they'd be handy, especially for keeping my head a reasonable size.

Take a prim and attach it to "avatar center" (the last attachment point listed on the official viewer).

Now move it so it is centered in your crotch.

Stretch it to the height you want, but make sure it is the same height as it is wide.

    X,Y,Z all the same.

Now get into a Tpose and adjust until you fit inside - fingers touching the sides, head and feet the op and bottom. But NEVER move tthe center of that prim from your crotch.

    Wow. That's really helpful, Pussycat!

Thank you so much for posting on this thread and my other one about height. That goes for everyone who has responded to this thread. There's been a lot of very useful information. tysm

All height tools use math to guess your height by taking agent height and either adding X or multiplying by X.  So all of them will be off.

Agent height goes from ground to eyes. The space above your eyes is set by head settings like forehead, egghead, and others. Obviously everyone is different here, and there is no lsl function to get someone's shape dials. This is why no height meter an get the right value.

Firestorm's guess is no better or worse than anyone else. For firestorm to be right you have to use the same head shape the coder/qa tester of firestorm's meter used.

Maybe the best thing to do is take the mean of the prim height, the FS height and the LL height, and just use that as the baseline. : )

After looking at all three, I'd say I'm coming in around 6 2. A bit tall.
