  1. <snip> You like Phoenix? Go use it. You like Emergence? Go use that. But please try to keep your negative criticisms and damning viewer comparisons to a minimum, because everything you use, from the grids, to the networks, to the viewers, costs you absolutely nothing! <snip> Enjoy SL for what it is folks and put forward your suggestions without sending in the lynch mobs. Well said
  2. They are trying to undo many of the mistakes they made in the original development. "2" is just a number. Viewer 2.4 is a far better viewer than Viewer 2.0 was. And I'm sure 2.5 will be even better I could never go back to that old-fashioned pre-V2 interface now. If you made me, I would seriously have to consider leaving SL. I think you're right, the rate and extent of the V2 improvements are going to accelerate, and I'll be swapping between Kirsten's and V2 for the latest goodies.
  3. In fact, I think that is a great protest. Everyone set their display name to John (or Jane) Doe and show LL just how completely stupid it is. Since so few people use 2.3, it won't impact most of us at all and just make SL impossible for the 2% of the population crazy enough to use a 2.x viewer. Thank you so much for that constructive suggestion. Actually, most of the 2.x users among my contacts seem to run with display names turned off anyway.
  4. Chapeau, those names aren't "taken" -- the signup process does at least prevent people from creating a username that's identical to an existing avatar's name. That's the ONE thing they've done right. Yes, BUT.... my name is 'Chapeau Constantine' with a space. SInce new account names can't now be created with spaces, I tried to set one up with the name 'ChapeauConstantine' (no space) This was rejected with the words "Sorry, that username has already been taken. Please try a different username". The user name I tried to use was NOT identical to an existing avatar's name, unless there's some fuzzy logic checking that inserts spaces into the proposed user name and checks against existingg names. I really don't understand how this works.
  5. OK, I am totally baffled. I gathered that any account created now will require just one user name, of up to 31 characters (so user friendly that) I also gathered from various comments that it is possible to steal existing account names for a new account. That sounding a bad idea, I thought I would get my retaliation in first and create a new account with as close to my existing user name as I could get.... "chapeauconstantine" and "ChapeauConstantine" are taken, apparently, as are single word variants of the names of people on my friends list, without exception. Bugger, I thought, I've been cloned, or hijacked, or whatever the official term is. Not so, it seems, because these names do not exist in SL. They don't show up in search inworld, or on the SL web search. So is this all a storm in a teacup? Is there something that prevents someone stealing my name? This really is the most unnecessary and confusing 'enhancement' I have ever witnessed. The FAQs and other info related to this foul-up are completely unhelpful. Someone should be handed his @ss in his hat and told to shut the door on the way out.
  6. Linden Lab has obviously put a shedload of work into the new feature called display names, and it's clear they think it's a really important, ground breaking feature that will change my life for ever. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what I should use it for. Any suggestions anyone? I really don't want the Lindens to feel they've wasted their time and energy on this.
  7. What's a Flog ? :-) What's Twitter? Seriously....
  8. I love Viewer 2.2 particularly with the Starlight Skin. I'm usually the stick in the mud that likes things the same but I must be branching out. I've taken to this like a duck to water. Good for you! It really doesn't take much work to get used to it does it? The Starlight skin is great.
  9. Ok, Samm, so tell us what you do on SL. Are you a builder? Do you design clothing or jewels? Are you a Photographer? Are you a DJ or a Host? Are you more than 30 years old and then your eyes are not so good to see grey-on-dark grey? Are you using a notebook or netbook with tiny display? Most of these people I described above, and some others I forgot to describe, prefer to use a spoon to eat soup instead of a fork. I build, I take photographs, and I am 100% converted to Viewer 2.2 and Kirsten's viewer, I wouldn't go back if you paid me. No doubt some bright spark will chip in to say that I can't be a very GOOD builder or photographer if I choose to use a fork rather than a spoon, or whatever cutlery-related metaphor we are using today, but I can live with that. I am well over 30, my eyesight is not what it was (like my hearing), I use Viewer 2.2 on a laptop with 15 inch display without any problems whatsoever, with the UI size set to 95%. All very subjective, of course.
  10. Oh God, I'm embarrassed, I had completely forgotten that I had installed the latest Starlight skin, which adds a lot of good stuff to the vanilla viewer. Sorry, I'll crawl back under my rock. However, Starlight is well worth taking a look at and is very easy to install. Download and installation instructions at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_Skins/Starlight
  11. Where are the local lights settings? Me/Preferences/Graphics ... local lights have 3 settings: maximum, limited or none
  12. How many ppl are really going to spend 10-20min setting up their viewer? I think you might be surprised how many people do spend a little time making their viewer do what they want. No, I don't have figures to back that up /me sighs. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that even the most die-hard self-confessed technophobe is prepared to put some effort in, much as they might tweak their web browser to suit their personal tastes. And 10-20 minutes is not very long in the context of how much time we spend actually inworld doing stuff. It shouldnt take even that long.
  13. My biggest complaint and reason for not using 2.0 was that the camera and movement controls were in the same location and had to constanly be toggled to use, making it near impossible for me to build properly. My suggestion is that they also be made unlockable and able to drag them to my desired location on my screen. When that happens I will again consider this viewer. You can do exactly that right now.
