Your hardware looks fine for SL (but then you knew that).  Personally I know that Windows 10, while for the most part it is a great piece of software, it is causing myriad issues for some folks, largely due to the way it messes with installed drivers at updates.

In your case it still may be glitchy internet connection speeds, try testing the connection speed to the SL Tucson server, see if all is well there.  I use  http://speedtest.net  for that.

While I might agree with you that the SL software is often not as good as it should be, it is NOT crappy.  As Nalates points out, giving no details of the hardware a user is using to access SL gives helpers no chance to give useful advice.

Many SL problems come down to glitches in internet access or glitchy hardware.  It is not always nice to be told this but in my experience it is often...VERY often the case.

While there ARE issues with SL's current software base, these are probably not, for the most part, the cause of the OP's issue.

I have seen this phenomenon a few times over recent months, it is a connectivity issue, sometimes it seems to be server(sim) related, possibly a particular rack of servers, I don't know.

I have not observed it more frequently of late though.  As to WHAT it is, I am no wiser than you, although I do think that client(viewer) - server communication has degraded, possibly due to code-changes at server-level

  4. It is probably a waste of my time pointing this out (yet again) but...the RC roll should have finished by now so why is there no update on the GSP?

    Is there a problem

or is the tech in charge of the GSP asleep at the keyboard again?  :smileyfrustrated:

ETA Thursday 10pm BST:  OK. Tarbaby, he say nuttin'.  Oh well we must "assume".  My post is not worth a response.  I see.

  5. Angela

One thing that will help anyone trying to assist you is if you post your system specification here.  That may give those wiser than me some insight into why you may be suffering these issues.

Also whether you are on a wired or wireless cnnection and the bandwidth you have set in your viewer preferences. :smileywink:

  6. Caleb

It not a big deal really, but the Grid Status Page has at no time (that I've seen) carried notice of the Main Server Roll, this week.  Why is that?  Is the tech responsible on holiday or something or are they all asleep (again).

(Reason for edit: grammar corrected to protect the unwary). :smileytongue:

It wasn't just the act of them stating the blindingly and previously noted obvious.  It was that they posted on the 18th about something on the 13th! :matte-motes-mad:

But, hey, I know Linden Lab have all sorts of cool tech...I just didn't realise that they had a TARDIS!

ETA 3pm PDT Sat 19th:  Well at least they have got the dates corrected now.

  8. Yes Niall

This is usual.  What is your concern, it is not obvious.  to me, at least.

ETA:  Having posted, and seen Niall's post as the only reply "boom" and three more now appear, presumably this page looked different earlier. :smileyfrustrated:

ETA 2 on Wed 02 March:

So the RC rolls have vanished from the Google calendar, I guess that must mean they have been cancelled for today?  And yet I see that next week's Main channel roll is still there.  What is going to be rolled then I wonder?? :smileysurprised:

I have to admit that while not understanding a good half of what Chris Linden wrote, it is very heartening to see such pieces.  Not only do those who DO understand it all feel more informed and involved, it make us dunces out here realise that the Linden Lab staff not only do a compllicated job, they are prepared to tell us about it too.  That makes me feel a whole lot more connected to SL. :smileyhappy:

  10. Wolf

You put your finger (um, you DO have fingers I assume?) on something that gets in the crop of most non-Americans.

The USA is such a big place that the folk in the middle and to the West really do not think much about a place that is far, far away to them, namely Yurrup.

Those that do know are vastly outweighed by those who either don't or don't care either way.  It is just the way it is.

Most of us Yurrpians don't know much about the States, if we are honest.  The distances are mind-boggling to those of us that live in crowded countries.

  11. Oh My

So it's most likely a security exploit issue.  That makes me feel so much better...NOT.

These "panic updates", and that is what they are, are a real game-breaker for some and they make a mockery of any rational attempt at event scheduling.

Add to that if I was like many users who never bother to read blogs or access the Grid Status page, I'd be wondering what the **** was going on and why I couldn't log on.

I know this sort of thing is important but surely LL could have given us a little "heads up" warning at a reasonable time?

By the time the "advance warning" had been posted I was tucked up in bed and many other European users would have been also.  Secondlife is a Global system so a bit of consideration for those of us NOT in the USA would have been nice.

I usually keep track of SL via my mobile but I had not done so on this occasion, (I DO have a RL) and frankly I would not have had time to warn any Europeans likely to be affected of an impending issue.

ETA at 9:15am PST: Oh, thanks for the restart (s) Linden Lab not merely one but two!

  12. This business of inventory loss is one which thousands of users have faced.  It needs must be due to communication errors within the Linden Asset-server cluster but there are many external factors that make such loss more likely.

Large inventories in and of themselves can cause issues simply due to the sheer volume of data that must be synchronised at every log in.  This appears to be more prevalent in Third-Party Viewers, though so far as I can see there is no good reason for this.

There has always been a limit to the number of items that can be accomodated in a single folder, and there is definite evidence that GIP (Good Inventory Practice) where a set of subfolders keeps items more handily organised both for the user and the asset-servers is advantageous.

It is always a surprise to me that a "large" inventory by LL terms is one over 10000 items.  Anyone who has more than 5 years in SL with an inventory of less than 25000 has my admiration and presumably either is not very sentimental about old items or is very good at boxing up or deleting items.

I do not think that much information is available about the load that large inventories place on the SL asset-servers and it might pay Linden Lab to make better provision on this topic in the Wiki and also on the SL blog.

In the limit all inventory is virtual - just a few lines of code, but to most of us it has great sentimental value and deserves better explanation than is currently made.

  13. Fascinating.

So restarting a goodly number of RC channel regions to Main Server, then rolling them all back didn't warrant any comment in here, the main server restart thread.

    Oh well.....:smileyindifferent:

ETA: Yes, I did notice that there was comment on the GSP...that is all there was.

  14. I don't know what the issue is, but the Google Calendar on the Grid Status Page is not displaying.  It does not show in all the common browsers so it is not a simple browser issue.  I have heard talk od javascript issues at Google, so they may be related.

Perhaps Linden Lab could check this out at their end, please.

OK my bad a cache clearance of my browser(s) sorted the issue.  My apologies to anyone who read the OP. :smileyembarrassed:

  15. Caleb

You've copied and pasted your days again!  27th is Wednesday, not Thursday!! :smileytongue:

ETA 1:30-ish pm PST: OK the Roll of RC regions for this week has vanished from the Google calendar now, Caleb, colour me confused.  :smileysurprised:

ETA2 3.20pm PST ish:  And now the rolls are back on the calendar for Wednesday still..so...??

  16. Atashi

This sounds like something that LL engineers have been seeing at restarts for a long time.  If Caleb doesn't cascade this to the inworld team, raise a trouble ticket or if you're Premium do a Live Chat.  The sim needs a restart and that "should" fix the issue.

It is some form of permission error (I forget the details) and it is a "known issue" at restarts.  :smileyfrustrated:

  17. Alison

One good reason for your issue may well be as the previous poster suggests, that is you have non-ASCII or "special" characters in your name.  Most scripted objects (such as group inviters and tip-jars) no not recognise non-ASCII characters and that may be the root of your problem.
