  1. That computer should be more than capable of running SL. Often when I hear/read people complaining about lag, it soon comes to light they're running SL on a non-gaming spec computer with sub-optimal settings. This is not the case here.

Others have pretty much got it covered here on what to check but it's important to narrow down what kind of lag you have, e.g. server side (unlikely), network or hardware. The suggestions above will help you identify this but in Firestorm there's also a basic lag meter you can access by clicking at the top-right.

It may also be worth trying a different viewer such as Alchemy as a test to see if it performs better. Personally I found it to perform much better as it makes better use of the GPU but sadly it's somewhat lacking on the feature front, so I went back to Firestorm instead. May be worth a try though.

Also and unrelated to the above suggestion - How good is your internet connection? SL isn't too taxing on modern internet connections these days and providing you have at least 5Mbps on the downstream, you should be fine assuming it's consistent & reliable. That said, if you have a dodgy WiFI connection susceptible to interference and/or drop-outs then this too will cause problems with SL given that everything is streamed to your client/viewer. To rule this out, you can try connecting to your router via ethernet if you haven't already done so. (though again, really need to narrow it down to determine if we're dealing with network related lag)

  2. Thought I'd start a new thread although there's similar speculative threads on what people think they might see in Premium Plus. This one is little different - what would you like to see in Premium Plus?

    Personally, I'd like to see:

    • New exclusive adult continent linked to Zindra, similar to Horizons. - Perhaps 2048 sqm per parcel with double prims. Available to purchase to anyone with Premium Plus. Beach/island theme with access to sailing areas. Give it a Blake Sea look & feel and it will sell like hot cakes
    • 2048 sqm inclusive tier allowance
    • Increased number of groups
    • Weekly stipend of L$500
    • Linden Lab hosted radio/stream
    • Ability to list parcels for rent on the map/search
    • Access to a Linden Lab hosted rental/payment system with integration with land management tools (Similar to Casperlet but with better integration with parcel/land management)

These are just a few I'd like to see. Some I know will never happen as they may have legal implications or require a lot of dev work, but it's nice to dream. Would be interested to hear other people's ideas. :)

Misinformation, as I have run numerous tests on all viewers.  Alchemy was the preferred viewer for less lag.  Upon gathering information, it's been said; Alchemy utilizes the GPU more over CPU.  This is why the viewer offers more FPS and eliminates some of the lag.  Firestorm was by far the worst viewer when it came to lag despite the average FPS.  The Second Life viewer is literally nonexistent since textures take forever to load and lacks features that are QoL like Animation Overrider which is essential in eliminating extra huds that kill FPS and causes more lag.

We were told that moving up to the cloud would make things easier, faster and more reliable.  Unfortunately, that has become false, and we are seeing far worse lag than we did before.  There needs to be an explanation as to why there will be days of perfection as if my sim server is in my home running on my network and then most of the time the server feels it's on planet Pluto.  One of my friends that worked as real estate agent said, "We received a memo stating prices may drop once we go to the cloud."  What happened, why didn't the prices drop?  Is it because of inflation and they are abusing the customer/user by keeping the prices high while paying less for servers?

Again, I appreciate the trolls not chiming in with comments about not getting a sim or leaving it for business.  I use a sim for pleasure, and I enjoy building urban city.  It's come to a point where $300 is not worth spending on a sim that is in constant lag and can barely hold more than 10 people with low script count.  In the end, it always comes down to "wow, you have a lot of scripts running, that's your problem."  Why can't it ever be, "Well, SL is old, the coding is old and nothing will ever work."?

I guess you did not endure mainland prior to the move to the cloud? Sim crossings were painful. They're still not seamless but gone are the days when you'd find yourself constantly flying uncontrollably across sims as soon as you cross a border. SL has come a long way since then, in part due to the move to the cloud.

The hardware is better but that doesn't mean everything else stands still. We now have higher resolution textures, more complex avatars, more detailed mesh designs and that's just to name a few - oftentimes these are not optimised to meet end-user hardware limitations.

Imo the weakest link is end-user hardware, more often than not. A lot of people still run SL on non-gaming spec computer hardware. Of course they're going to suffer with lag if they do not keep their settings low. I brought this up before only be told "SL is not a game!" -- try telling your computer that! I have a 2 year old mid-spec gaming laptop and I think it's fair to say SL gives it a good spanking. Even in the depths of winter, I can turn off my radiator because my laptop is sufficient to keep my room heated. The weakest link is probably not AWS infrastructure.

  5. Definitely looks under 18 to me also. I'm not surprised many sim owners have a zero tolerance policy for avatars which may potentially look under 18, particularly if they have a moderate/adult theme. Surely this is a good thing?

Also, avatar height on SL is deceptive. This is because many residents have avatars far in excess of average heights in the real world. If you are 5'5" in SL (which is more or less average female height in many western countries), you will look below average/very short on SL and this will not help in terms of convincing people that your avatar is intended to look 18+.

The bulk of really good plots are still in the hands of the people who bought them at launch.

Horizons was a gift to land barons, which is why it failed to take off despite having almost everything that made Belli a roaring success. Even now, if a Horizons parcel gets actually abandoned, you can't put a claim in for it as a neighbor, it MUST go to auction where some investment group will suck it up for a premium.

Hmm not so sure. Looking at the map right now there's in the region of ~150 avatars in Horizons, not including the info hubs. Compare that with Bay City which is virtually empty right now. (sadly) For me there is a real sense of community & life in Horizons, unfortunately the same cannot be said for many areas in SL as you no doubt already know.

As for abandoned parcels in Horizons, albeit a rarity - you can put in a claim but LL will likely receive interest from other individuals too and on that basis they will put them on auction. - I don't blame them. If they can take L$70k+ out of the economy, that's L$70k+ that won't be making its way to a Tilia account any time soon. So rightly or wrongly, it benefits LL to send them to auction. If that helps to keep SL afloat, then why not?

The way I'd think about it is how long it'd take the landlord to make a return on their investment. Assuming tier is negligible (it isn't but it makes the math easier) Renting at 700/week will make back an initial investment of 150,000 (somewhat low at the moment) in a bit more than 4 years. Given the challenge of actually finding someone to rent the parcel from you, and the long time window, it doesn't really seem like it makes that much business sense to buy the parcel just to rent it.

I'm one of those "landlords" though not particularly a fan of that term. I rent out my parcels in Horizons at competitive rates and I don't expect rental returns to cover the cost of purchasing the parcel as you quite rightly made evident with your calculations. It does cover tier which indeed isn't negligible and will always be a factor for any land dealer. If a parcel sits empty, it still costs the land dealer tier and that is a problem land dealers cannot simply ignore.

Location is everything. A parcel in a good location at a reasonable price will rent out. That said, if the parcel sits vacant for any length of time, I sell it and buy something else and if I'm lucky prices will have risen over time. It doesn't always work out that way and may also take time but so far it has enabled me to build a portfolio of nice parcels while being able to rent them out at competitive rates for the benefit of other residents.

For me it's just for fun. My rl job pays my rl bills and that's it. Some land dealers take it far more seriously and do make a rl living out of it but I'd hazard a guess they are few and far between and probably a lot smarter than I. The real winners are LL and good for them. - There would be no SL without them. :)

I was just checking out prices there's some lots under L$100/sqm quite a few lots at L$500k and one person is asking L$1000000 or $4149 for a plot 😱

Some of those will be rentals. Landlords often put them up "for sale" at such prices so that they appear on the map, then in the parcel name they will often put the rental price and more often than not it will be reasonable in comparison.

Of course this would not be necessary if it were possible to make it so that parcels available for rent appear clearly on the map, in the same manner as parcels listed for sale.

Here is an example. Some may say L$700 p/w is still too high for a 1024sqm parcel with 702 prims but when you consider the landlord likely paid a premium to purchase that grid edge parcel, (albeit probably not L$488k) I'd argue that it's reasonable.
