I uploaded a model and had to slightly adjust my diffuse texture inworld to look correct on the face I was applying it to. I adjusted the horizontal and vertical scales of the diffuse texture and changed the horizontal and verticl offsets too. Obviously the normal and spec maps were now out of alignment with the diffuse so I then inputted the same values I had with the diffuse thinking that this was the quickest and most obvious fix.

However, every time I adjust their values and close the edit panel the vertical offset values of the normal and spec change. Their other values that I inputted stick, but the vertical offset refuses to stick at the value that I give it.

So is this a bug, is there an alternative correct way to do this or do I have to rescale the diffuse, norm and spec again in PS?

This is the message I got when trying to upload a model, "The texture is empty. Upload_InvalidAsset".

I've never ran into this message/error before and I can't find any reference to it on the net either.

Now for some context. Last week I started using Maya (2012) for the first time and I have been basically messing around learning all the stuff that's different from Blender.

I made a simple sofa as a test exercise and got myself lost and confused, despite the tutorials that are available, when trying to UV map/unwrap. I had though while messing around earlier directly applied a texture to the legs of the sofa within Maya by just selecting the leg faces and assigning a material and texture. While uploading a test model on the grid to check something else I ticked the "upload textures" to see what would happen. Well my model uploaded with a lovely set of textured legs.

I thought to myself, "that's a simple way to apply some textures quickly." So I started applying material and textures to different parts of the model gradually and was importing each time I did that to check that they still would upload, and they did for another two occasions till the third occasion when I got the error/message above.

So I'm at a loss as to how to correct the error message and wondering whether I've made some specific Maya error, which I'm unaware of yet. Any tips and suggestions are gladly welcome though it's late here and I'm off to my bed so i won't be able to add further info till tomorrow morning.

My answer would be, as many that had the chutzpah to do it.

Using my example, the copybotter copies the model in IW takes it into a 3D program and moves a few vertices and edges around and adds maybe a few personal identifiers to it. How does, me the creator, and my crack team of lawyers prove that the copybotter and I didn't come up with the same design at roughly the same time and it wasn't to all intents and purposes a race to market? I got to IW first where he doesn't sell his copied product and he got to SL first where he defends his so called creation by filing a DMCA.

I'm sure with tenacity and with a police force that was intent on discovering the truth about a dollar product and quite a few bucks dedicated to my legal bill then a point could be reached where one could reach the conclusion that in all probable likelihood my creation was copied. That would though have to involve seizure of both parties computers, tracking back on their internet histories and avatar creations, getting information from ISPs and analysing their 3D creation software; not a routine or priority task for any police force investigating a low value crime I would suggest.

So, until some creator follows through with a DMCA and an examplary punishment is given by a judge then I see no end to copybotters. As I see it at the moment the rewards outweigh the risks. The only risk being that somebody might file a DMCA.

OK so let's say I create something in InWorldz. Unbeknownst to me it is copybotted there and the copybotter then imports it into SL and starts selling it. A few weeks later I join SL and import my model and start selling it. Within days the copybotter files a DCMA against me. According to LL's records the copybotter was indeed the first to import it into SL. Should LL then take swift and decisive action against my account, the original creator of the object?

This is why LL cannot act and be the arbiter of a DCMA case.

Of course the silver bullet solution is for everybody to use mouselook more often and cut out camera clipping pretty much altogether. I play many online games and going into mouselook or first person view (fpv) is quite natural to me and an environment I'm happy to move and look around in.

The difference in SL as opposed to many other online games is that it is not a restricted environment in terms of view distance and movement. This generally leads people to want to look at places in the mid to far distance rather than move their avatar nearer or they prefer to pan their camera around their immediate environment because it's quicker than turning and gives a wider scope of view than a fpv.

I wish that SL would support TrackIR, which I have been using for some time now and really improves the fpv experience and is the most immersive way of looking around your environment. From what I hear LL are happy to have it incorporated into the code, but as usual are not prepared to do it themselves so it would have to be done by a resident...again. Then again how hard a job would it be for LL or a TPV to mod the camera to have your own pre-defined snap to camera positions at the press of a button?

P.S. When I read the title of your post I thought that you had come up with some revolutionary building tool or cheat :smileywink:

This article or concept isn't that weird though from what I read. It seems to be aimed at the games provider rather than consumer. For example if LL were grossly negligent in some aspect and I had my virtual land and/or /inventory ruined by a malicious action then I might well win a case of compensation against LL. This merely insures them against that claim.

Now it maybe the case that there are quite a lot of shoddy game providers in China who are incurring lots of valid compensation claims because they do not take appropriate measures to protect the IPR, data or virtual property of their gamers. So, they can either tighten up their act or go on paying increasing premiums each year. Seems to me that in the long run it's a win win scenario.

I think you hit the nail right on the head.

What I would like to add is that there were also compagnies, who did not sent their own employees to investigate the possibilities in SL,but they were talking into it by their marketing agency. Those came up with figures like 25M+ residents, growing by so and so many a month. Only thing they forgot to tell is that there is not way to reach the population all at the same time, and marketing only starts when you have build up your sim.

That's why I said at the end of my post that the only way to attract them back, as advertisers or a presence, is to monetise the chat function and/or the viewer because it's the one way that you can have the whole of the online SL population as a captive audience at once.

If I was them [LL] I'd imagine they would start by placing pop up ads in the chat and viewers of free accounts. Then I would move on to taking away the free stipend from premium members if they didn't want ads in their chat or viewer or paying a larger stipend if a premium member accepted the ad/product placement pop ups in chat or the viewer.

I can tell you one main reason and I write with a little authority on the matter as an organisation that I once worked for sent me to SL in late 2006 to investigate marketing and exposure opportunities in SL. We quickly concluded that SL had near zero marketing and exposure opportunities. Apart from one off occasions of having LL flag up the news that your organisation had taken up a presence in SL to its residents or that RL media publicise that you have then that was the apex of any publicity and exposure you were going to get in SL.

In real life you can place commercials in newspapers, on TV, billboards or establish a shop, which you know will have at least a certain amount of traffic through them. In SL there is no such captive traffic and even the busiest places will rarely have over 100 people passing through them. Furthermore, a quick look at the top ten sims for traffic would quickly put off any company or organisation, apart from Playboy and Hustler, from trying to acquire some on-sim advertising space in those busy sims.

Moreover, if say Mercedes bought their own sim what would drive traffic there (some pun intended)? What could that sim provide as an experience that was unique and surpassed their own website? The most it could ever achieve would to be a very expensive link to their website or a visitor's local dealership and if you were really going to buy a car or any real life item would anybody really think, 'Let me go check that out in SL first!'

I might also add that the reliability of the hardware and software of LL in those days compared to now was terrible. It was not uncommon that the servers could be down for 24 hrs, TPs not working, inventory not loading, friends lists stuck on loading etc. All these things did not give businesses any confidence to invest in the platform. On top of that SL's growing reputation at the time amongst the media as a den of scandal, illegal gambling and deviant sexual activities is not something any business or organisation would willingly want to be associated with.

Nowadays if I was a business and I wanted my products exposed to the SL population I'd just pay for an advert on the Grid Status page or wait till LL start doing pop up ads on the viewer or in local chat.

A huge faux pas and something that will likely piss off more than it helps. People don't like begging. Even if the DJ, the club, or whatever is absolutely superb NO ONE likes to be spammed that often with begging for tips. It, in fact, draws the exact opposite response from most people. Sure some might tip, most won't. Begging them to that often, is going to make it even less likely they'd tip. Simply because you annoyed the crap out of them. As you can see from this thread(and the tons of others about this topic) most HATE that kind of spam.

As a DJ, I would refuse to work with someone who did that, and have. It lacks tact, and class.

I tip when my request is played or I see that a host is going the extra mile to do a good job regardless of the crowd; gesturebators get nothing though (please bear this in mind, I'm not alone). However, I do hate it when I tip a DJ or host to receive the message that I've paid an anonymous club owner who's never there. I paid to hear my song or the DJ's playlist/genre/style. Most times your **bleep**ty built sim and club with it's inherent lag is actually a detraction from my experience and is only mitigated by the DJ's music, the host's efforts or the people present.

It's my contention that if it's the right DJ, a good host and an enthusiatic crowd we'd happily enjoy ourselves socially in an empty 25x25 parcel. Why do you think when it really matters people go off to beautiful sims, with a good stream that has danceballs. In rl we go to nightclubs because they won't let us dance somewhere nice. SL nightclub owners are for the most part still anchored irl and have little imagination.
