  1. I appreciate the reply. Actually, I found it. It was under Environment Editor> Sky Presets> New Preset> Lighting (tab)> Scene Gamma.
  2. I can't seem to find an answer via forum search or on the web, hence my question -- where are the gamma settings in the latest SL viewer? I haven't bothered to alter gamma since version 1.23, however I can't seem to locate the setting and I thought it was in the environment editor.
  3. So long as displaying both (user and display name) are the default behavior, I'm not necessarily concerned about screen clutter. In my opinion, what's important is that the user is conscious of disabling user names, should they choose to do so. Whats important to me is the knowledge that not everyone will be conscious of that. There will always be new or naive users, but considering both names are listed as the default behavior I'm of the opinion it's a no-brainer. I would rather see the situation avoided and the benefits still achieved by simply getting rid of the limited batch of last names and allowing users to change their name one time (or perhaps periodically for a small fee). I certainly wouldn't be opposed to that. In fact, it would be ideal. However, I don't really see that happening anytime soon. That said, I'm not hardcore about the impersonation factor of display names, assuming both the user and display name are apparent at the outset.

  5. CF, I guess you're just not grasping the point. Consider this - You have never seen a single instance of somebody impersonating a Linden with group names. Fine and dandy. I'm not convinced that your experience is a valid statistical sampling, but let's assume for the moment that there have been no instances on record of this happening. Why then, would the Lindens feel it necessary NOW to ban the use of their name as a display name? And why in the world would you object to letting residents switch off the capability to use their name as a display name? I don't know but if they were that concerned about people impersonating them why have they allowed the use of the Linden name in group titles for so long? To me, it's a non-issue either way but that's me. For that matter, you could use a titler. Point being, even if you could keep someone from using your moniker as a Display Name, what's to stop them from impersonating you using a group title? In my experience I've never seen group titles used for identity abuse, hence what reason would I have to believe it would be an issue with Display Names? Further, it's hard to abuse identities when yours is easily apparent to anyone that has user names enabled. Considering no one knows whether you have unique user names enabled or not, users attempting to impersonate would be taking a gamble and they'd look pretty stupid if the person they were trying to fool could easily see they weren't who they're trying to represent themselves as. That probably wouldn't stop some people but it's a strong deterrent, in my opinion. The person would run a fairly heavy risk of being easily exposed and banned from the sim to boot. Group tags are different because they do not replace usernames in tags, chat and IMs, regardless of individual preferences set by others. So you might put Adam Spark as your group tag, but ColdFrixion Writer would appear underneath. Yes, just as unique user names appear underneath user display names. If a user keeps it set as a preference to display usernames, and can put up with the extra screen clutter displaying all 3 causes. So long as displaying both (user and display name) are the default behavior, I'm not necessarily concerned about screen clutter. In my opinion, what's important is that the user is conscious of disabling user names, should they choose to do so.

  7. There definitely needs to be a way to show the users name in your friends list, if nothing else so you can keep track of who's who from one week to the next. A toggle that allows the user to see one or the other, or perhaps both would be very useful.
  8. LMAO , Seriously?, you're going to try and say that you are not still comparing Group Tags/Titlers to Display names? I read and comprehended your post very clearly the first time. Yes it was an issue before but as I stated it was easily discernable to differentiate avatars/Avatar names. Point still stands if there's no risk/danger of identity theft/impersonation/fraud with the new display names system, why have the Lindens protected the use of "Linden"? As you have said they didn't protect it with group tags Thank you , goodnight. What we have here is a logical fallacy called irrelevant thesis. It's where an individual attempts to refute anothers argument, advancing a conclusion that's different from the one being made. Again, you did not peruse my post carefully and that's not meant as an ad hominem. Ok, let's break it down. What I was not stating: In my last post, I was not saying that a person might confuse a group tag for anothers identity. If that's what you read then you did not read it carefully. I was making the point that, as of the present, a user can impersonate other GROUP members by creating and wearing a GROUP tag that's exactly the same as GROUP tags worn by members of any other GROUP. Now you tell me, did I mention anywhere in the above paragraph anything about confusing someone group tag for someone name identity? Example; Let's say I run a store called FAMOUS SECOND LIFE STORE. Let's also say I've created a group for my store and given myself the group title "FAMOUS STORE OWNER". As it currently stands, anyone else can create a bogus group and give themselves the exact same group title "FAMOUS STORE OWNER" even though the group name itself might be different. However, anyone could easily be fooled by the group tag above their head unless they actually did some investigating and discovered for themselves that the actual group name doesn't match. The point; someone can easily impersonate other members of any other GROUP by creating a bogus group and giving themselves a title that exactly matches the title of the owner or staff of some other, perhaps very respectable GROUP, thereby quite easily impersonating members of any GROUP. Again, was I making the point that someone could easily confuse a users group tag for their display name? No. I was making the point that as of the moment, group titles aren't sacred. Others can use the exact same group title that anyone else uses in their group. Hence, if there hasn't been an issue with group impersonation via bogus groups, why would there be an issue with identity impersonation using display names? In fact, you have to wait a week to change your display name, whereas anyone can change their group title on the fly, at any time.
  9. ColddFrixion , you keep mentioning the Group Title thing . Let's clear this up, the Group Title thing and any Titlers are EASILY discernable from the actual user name , whereas this new Display name feature isn't and by LL's design wishes would REPLACE the username if possible. SO PLEASE STOP comparing them, it's apples and oranges. That being said, it's still fact that the Lindens feel there could be impersonation/identity theft issues thusly they protected the Linden name , All most of us want is to have our registered usernames protected from being used as display names , which should be the policy anyway. It's also fact and evident by the way that LL is continuing forward with Display Names that they are blatently ignoring the feedback they are receiving from the majority of us SL residents. Which really doesn't maintain good customer relations. Had you perused my reply, you'd have noticed the point of the post was different from the earlier replies you allude to. Please read it carefully once more and if you're of the same opinion, I'll be glad to explain the difference.
  10. People can change theis name and use the same name of other residents? Users can also use the same group title other residents use in their groups, hence wouldn't it be just as convenient to impersonate group and store owners or other staff? Would you say that's been an issue heretofore? The difference is you can change group titles whenever you want. You can only change Display Names once per week. To answer your question, they can't change the original name they picked when they created their account, which is your unique identifier.
  11. Personally, I wouldn't want to use the Linden namesake anyway. For that matter, the only time I've seen the Linden name used by anybody was one of the actual staff members. I never saw anybody impersonating a Linden in any form. But that's beside my point. This is what I am trying to say: However, I've known instances of "griefing" through the use of that display name trick where the person pulling off their little joke about ruined the victim's reputation there on the spot at her job. A pretty "upright", honest and straight forward business type of person and she was victimized by somebody who thought it was funny to "post" an impersonated comment in open chat that was quite vulgar. (turns out that griefer was a friend of a former friend and the insinuated "joke" was actually a malicious attempt to ruin a public image). The only way anyone would have known it was an imposter who made the comment would have been "investigating" the profile of the person making the comment. But unfortunately, not everybody knows to do that (all jokes aside, especially newbies and anybody not yet familiar with navigating the viewer). A simple "switch" (check box or button) that would prevent impersonation by any means would be a prudent measure to ensure one's own reputation is kept intact from possible assault. I can see where the use of a "display name" would come in handy for certain role play character names that would fit the genre that they are playing. But it's not entirely beneficial and leaves it too open for misuse. Before I respond to the rest of the post, would you please tell me which display name trick you're alluding to; a group tag, titler or the new display name feature?

  13. I wasn't saying i wanted to be a linden. and i have seen one. here was a sever griefer problem and i about feel over at the L rep that showed up to fix it. It was A, not saying the but A, Philip Linden. and oddly that griefer vannished about 3 seconds laer and all his alts I didn't mean to imply that you, personally, wanted to impersonate a Linden. I was just saying for anyone who's wanted to try and impersonate one, the option's been available for years now and I've never really seen that title in anyone's group name heretofore. For that matter, I've never seen anyone use group titles to impersonate anyone else in general. Maybe it's just me but I don't see why that trend would change with Display Names.
  14. Good point Ando. If the "Lindens" forbid the use of their namesake... then we should also be able to do the same as a matter of personal choice. At least, with that choice we can reasonably guard our SL identity & reputations. If you really wanted to use the Linden title all you'd have to do is create a bogus group and give yourself the title of (whatever first name) Linden. I doubt it would fool all but inexperienced users however residents have had the option to use the Linden name in group titles for years now. Have you ever seen a single instance of someone successfully impersonating a Linden this way?
  15. If you really think dowloading a newer version of the sl viewer is not a big issue well then your so wrong i asume your running sl without changing things in debug and prefrences and your screem position with the layout like building. It cost me about 30min everytime i change to a update and i dont whant to update every month i deleted library junk out of my inventory good for 1400+ items all crap and useless junk this is just a example why i delete that? well it cost more time to load the inventory! I deleted classic clouds because they are lagy as hell and footprint shadow etc etc etc....... so yes i have a problem with the useless updates sl is ffooling us with indeed so what is that your problem is that something you may judge me about you f****tard? If you're opposed to frequent updates (I'm not saying you are) is there a reason you have to download and install the latest beta version? I could understand the opposition to frequent updates if updating was required.
  16. @ CW - Does it take any extra effort to look at the unique user name of a user when they're wearing a group tag above it? Why would display names be any different? Do group tags get echo'ed in open chat? Do group tags get echo'ed in group chat? Do group tags get echo'ed in IMs? Do group tags get logged in files? Do they appear in the dashboard in the SL site? Do your homework and let us know what you find. Did you watch the video above? You could answer at least one of those questions yourself if so. For that matter have you even used Display Names yet?
  17. So why impose on us an extra effort to identify whoever we interact with? Your arguments are all techno-legal masturbation and devoid of all ergonomic considerations. Does it take any extra effort to look at the unique user name of a user when they're wearing a group tag above it? Why would display names be any different?
  18. For the record, you are 100% wrong . We all have to worry about it, whether we are using it or not. What don't you follow about this? ANYONE can use the name ColdFrixion Writer now, go anywhere and do anything. Most people wont even know that there is another ColdFrixion Writer in SL, they will simply meet someone known as ColdFrixion Writer and accept him/her as ColdFrixion Writer, as a person . If the second ColdFrixion Writer happens to be rude, unsrcuplous or, as likely to be the case, using your name for malicious reasons then the people he/she deals with will be left with the impression that ColdFrixion Writer is not a person they wish to consort with. The next time they see the person with the name ColdFrixion Writer they might avoid him. They may choose not to do business with anyone named ColdFrixion Writer in future, and they may have a passing conversation with a friends... "Did you see ColdFrixion Writer today, doing X,Y Z?" Thus you, the real ColdFrixion Writer, will have your name/reputation/safety in SL compromised. It may not effect to a great degree you but to imagine nobody will be hurt or badly effected by this is just wishful thinking. It will effect everyone at different levels. Some worse than others. Have some empathy for those who have more to lose. One last point made over and over and over and over again, if LL made it so that nobody can use and existing user name then all the problems associated with this would evaporate. Do it! Again, users have already had the ability to create display names using group titles for years now, which includes the ability to use your name and mine.
  19. There may be confusion initially, however I'd be willing to bet as time goes on the issue of identity confusion will become as negligible as someone mistaking another persons group tag for their identity. I could be wrong of course, but I'd bet otherwise. How many instances of identity confusion do you need to see before you admit its a problem that should have been avoided, though? For me, the mere potential of one day of havoc is a major red flag. No, strike that. Its a showstopper in my view. If people want to steal someone's identity by the current definition, they can already do that with group titles, hence if there hasn't been mass identity confusion over group title abuse heretofore, it's implausible (to me) that display names will be a problem.
  20. "So the display name appears above the user name, which means that display names have become glorified titlers, it would seem. Something which one can already do by creating a group and changing one's active role text to whatever. And a team developed this. A team of people. Spending development budget. Worked hard and diligently to create something which, at best, effectively does what one could already do, and at worst, will confuse people while doing it." Well, one difference might be that a user doesn't have to spend lindens to create a bogus group just to give themselves a custom title. Might seem confusing to some but no more confusing to me than seeing a user wearing a bogus group tag with a custom title, but that's me.
  21. You seem to place a lot of faith in the average person's ability/desire to actually read and comprehend directions. I work in IT and know that people just don't read them. Witness for yourself how many people in this very blog are complaining that this new "feature" isn't working for them when it was clearly stated that display names will initially only be enabled on selected sims (with those sims named). Also keep in mind that the average new user to SL will have no idea about any of this and will probably not be aware of Torley's vids, the SL wiki, KB, this blog, the forums, etc. For that matter many current residents have no idea about these self-help resources (never mind that they all could be made a hell of a lot easier to use). We'll see how it goes but, I have an idea that the potential problems that you brush aside will be greater than you think. Glad that I'm not using V2 and won't see any of this nonsense until forced to switch from (the very reliable and sadly now deceased) Snowglobe. Maybe by the time LL pulls the plug on the 1.x series there will be a usable 2.x TPV. There may be confusion initially, however I'd be willing to bet as time goes on the issue of identity confusion will become as negligible as someone mistaking another persons group tag for their identity. I could be wrong of course, but I'd bet otherwise.
  22. 2 things: one has the ability to turn off username. Anybody with that setting would see me only as ColdFrixion Writer. Second thing - still waiting to find out if you can set your display name to Jack Linden.... or ANY linden, for that matter. If so, then I will be satisfied that whatever risk there is, is shared by the Lindens. As long as users are aware that display names can be changed, they (hopefully) won't be ignorant enough to rely on them for serious identification purposes. Therefore, if you're going to turn off user names, have the common sense to check a users unique user name before passing judgement as to who they really are. Therein lies the concern some have, people won't check every nook and cranny, honestly, LL should just let those who are already here and are concerned, the abilitty to reserve their name, like Linden is reserved, there are people with the real name Linden, they won't be able to use it. As Ceera points out, it's her registered business name, others have trademarked their names, LL should be listening here, it's a win win situation for them to actually listen. I understand your concern, although in my opinion there'll always be users who shoot first and ask questions later. I'm going to go out on a limb and give the average user a bit more credit than that though. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I shouldn't. We'll see, but to me it's so glaringly obvious that I can't imagine anyone with a modicum of intellectual ability not being able to see the display name for what it really is; a simple way to further customize your avatar. The identity aspect of display names is a gimmick, in my opinion. It doesn't actually tell you anything about their identity at all. That's what unique user names are for. The status quo has been I could just as easily create a group and give myself whatever name I want as my role.
  23. Therefore, if you're going to turn off user names, have the common sense to check a users unique user name before passing judgement as to who they really are. The problem lies in the fact that not everyone will do this. That and the fact that we shouldn't be bothered with having to. The impersonation issue is overblown, but not pulled out of thin air. It only takes a second to verify who is who, but its an unnecessary step that not everyone will bother to take before being swindled. Does it really require any real effort to just ignore display names altogether though? To me it's just another tag (eg group tag, etc.) to notice and ignore.
  24. Weird. I'll have to download this latest version later.
