When it comes to in-world locations, add my vote for the Forum Cartel Hangout. I don't have much time to spend there nowadays, but for a long time it was the center of my social life in SL, and many of the friends I made there are still among my close contacts today. I also have to put in a plug for the regular events in New Toulouse, the estate where I live. New Toulouse is usually a friendly place - just wandering the grounds you can usually find someone to strike up a conversation with. The regular weekly and monthly events there are very well attended, too. If you drop by any of the New Toulouse sims you can find information about regular events at the infohubs there. Full disclosure: I run one of those events. But, it's very well attended and everyone always has a good time. And it is my favorite place to socialize!
