On top of increased inworld sales on my customers end and decreated Marketplace sales on my end, I have met some really awesome people! I have had more of my customers add me to their friends list in the last 2 weeks than I have in the last year. And more and more people are coming back. It's funny because I put the invite out there to stop by just to say hi, and THEY DO. I have people who have just come back to my store to hang out and chat with me.

Great post!  I just picked out this little tidbit to say, this is especially great :)

    adding my own thoughts:

I think people like hunts so much because they find new places that they wouldn't have otherwise, and it is a totally inworld experience.  Even if you don't make any sales from most hunters, what matters is that they had the experience of being in your store to see if they liked the feel of it, and often people do pop onto the mailing list because they like the first few things they see, or remember your store when someone they know says, "oh i need such and such, where should i go?"

It seems that what you are really getting at is: Merchants need to work harder on promoting and maintaining their inworld presences. I agree!  Marketplace has always been a secondary thing for me and more of an advertisement for my inworld store.  But you cannot deny that the more people buy things from Marketplace, the better visibility you have there, which in turn increases the chances of people coming to your inworld store.  I do like the idea of using marketplace for demos and encouraging people to come inworld to get the real thing.  Of course you have to make sure your store is organized well and your SLURL leads directly to the product being offered.

I think it's very hard to organize a store, especially if you have a lot of items, and so that's why people tend to do a lot of shopping/viewing on the Marketplace.  It's faster, easier, and images take so much less time to load (that's a big one for me). All the information is right there.  So, maybe we could also take a few cues from marketplace and make sure our product displays are as clear as possible inworld with perms/prices etc very obvious for the customer to see.  I know a lot of merchants already strive for this, but we have all been to stores where things just aren't very clear and you have to do some digging just to find out if something is modifiable, or what not.

Really enjoying all the comments and viewpoints here, thanks so much for starting this thread and word vomiting on us! ;)

I received not only the post by CommerceTeam Linden above, but a personal apology from Dakota Linden for the way my ticket was handled and an assurance that Linden Lab is addressing that particular situation.  He also supplied the link to a post for the SL community:

Is everyone at work, asleep, or in another time zone?  I'm starting to miss you all.

I am really happy to see that they are addressing some of the customer service issues.  Aside from merchant problems, I wouldn't be at all surprised if poor customer support for residents in general were one reason why retention is so low in recent times.

  3. I bulk-edited a set of items where 1 of the items was affected (I edited 4 listings of same item/different colors), and now I have a second one that is now messed up, where

MINE: URL, item description, perms, price

THEIRS: pictures, and probably related items, since there are none and mine should have related items.

When I add that one to the cart, it works properly - but the pictures are wrong.

And in my other listings where the pictures and related items are mine but the URL and other information is the other merchant's, the other merchant's item gets added to the cart.

So it seems that anytime you edit an item you might get lucky and you might not.

Also, when I go to revise the newly messed up item with someone else's picture, their picture shows in my Editing Screen.

Thanks for the hint about most of them being older items... i sorted mine by date and have now found 2 items that point to an OD Designs guitar.  When I go to the listing, I can put the item in the cart and it is the other merchant's item (didn't try to buy it, was too expensive^^).. the link and item description/price are all this other product, only the pictures are mine.

Ahhh .. really?! So they are not even pulling the correct Product ID? When you go to that borked up listing, what is the number shown in the URL .. at the end? That's your Product ID. If they're getting that wrong too .. holy mackerel!

I don't know if the product ID is theirs or mine :/ I will have to look further.

    Take a look:

    https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Dean-Razorback-Electric-Guitar-21/1405957

    MINE: Pictures, Related Items

THEIRS: Item Title, Description, Price, Perms, Store Link

And to make it more interesting:

General maturity level: Building Components » Textures » Industrial and Urban Textures

I went to the other merchant's storefront and none of their items are in that category.

It appears to be impossible to buy a messed up listing (at least at this moment)...I have a lot of them and we're doing tests - nobody can buy them..transaction won't go through.

One thing I noticed...all the messed up listings were listed long ago. When I sort by recent items the messed up listings aren't encountered for many pages.

Thanks for the hint about most of them being older items... i sorted mine by date and have now found 2 items that point to someone else's products.  When I go to the listing, I can put the item in the cart and it is the other merchant's item (didn't try to buy it, was too expensive^^).. the link and item description/price are all this other product, only the pictures are mine.

  6. ouch :(  I noticed the list was very long at one point and seemed to contain items that were already associated, but then at some point the list got smaller and I can manage it now.

I assume you force deleted your magic boxes already and resynced?^^

  7. Agreed.  I have been doing some updates and what I do is upload the items from Merchant Outbox and then do something else for a bit so that everything is ready when I get started. Otherwise I get really annoyed at not seeing my products in there, because usually you upload something right when you are ready to change it... but you can't with the current delays.

  8. Hrm.. If that's because of Paypal, then Linden Lab should be paying to merchant, since it was delivered, and they can be the ones to wait for the actual payment, and Linden Lab is actually the one facilitating the paypal arrangement, not the merchant.

Wonder what this is about... I don't agree with it either. If  customer gets the item, merchant should get the money at same time. Seems like it should be obvious...
