I have 2 niche market  items for sale and have been selling regularly so far this month 8 have been sold 7 of item 1 and 1 off item 2.

A couple of days ago item 1 was first page position 3, now item 2 is on one page 1 and item 1 is 11th on page 2.

OK I can understand that even with good sales others could have done better, BUT... How can an item that I have only sold one off be on page 1 and the item I sold 7 off be end of page 2?

And for fun if i look for best seller item 1 is on page 6!!!!!

"Best Seller" has never worked.  From the beginning it was more like the inverse of what it should be.  There have been endless JIRA's (WEB-3140 for example) and posts about it but no fix.

As for the "Relevant" ranking, from my own observation, one of the heavier weights is recent sales.  Also, from observation, they use to run the search indexing more or less on a daily basis but now it seems kind of hit and miss.  So if you have good sales on Friday evening, for example, they may never actually be reflected in the "Relevant" ranking as the indexing will run Monday or Tuesday.

Set your keywords up correctly and don't worry about the rest because it's mostly out of your control :)

I'm marking your sim down on my 'To  do' list. I must see it after all this praise. Now
    this
is word of mouth marketing in action!

Please do drop by when you get a chance, Rya.  If you have the time and would like to see the sights,  I might suggest that you take a carriage ride around the sims as it's a great way to sit back & relax while getting an idea of what's out there.

We do our best to provide an enjoyable, immersive SL experience that is also profitable (and hence sustainable).  It's a tricky balancing act. especially since, as many have already pointed out in this thread, there's only so much time in a day.

I would love to hear what you think.

  3. Many thanks for the kind words, Czari, Dresden & Pamela, I really appreciate them :)

The business arrangement that I'm involved in may be of interest to others with regard to operating a profitable business.  As I mentioned before, I operate in a niche market and though my retail business is soley my responsibility I am also fortunate to have two partners in the larger enterprise of the historical land that we live in.

This provides me with the best of both worlds as I have complete control over my little store (I'm a control freak) but I also reap the rewards of a partnership with other talented & hard working people.  In this case it has proved that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

Business partnerships can be complicated and shouldn't be entered into lightly but if you can build good ones they can be extremely beneficial for all concerned.

But being furniture most people like to try before they buy, so they mainly come into the store. But I'd love to learn some new ways to increase MP sales even higher aside from good photos, good descriptions, good keywords, etc. Aside from just good general listing techniques how can we market our MP stores better?

That's interesting, Deja. I also sell furniture, prefabs etc. and I find that my sales are evenly split between inworld & the MP. I have everything on display inworld and yet I would guess that half my customers buy from the MP without checking it out "live" so to speak.

As for increasing MP sales, I believe that the use of social media (blogging, Twitter, Facebook, etc. as mentioned earlier in this thread) probably results in sending more people to my MP store than the one inworld.

As for marketing in general, selling in a niche market (French Antiques for me) can be an interesting challenge in itself. I support my role-play community in a number of ways including running a social networking site which benefits the community at large as well as the merchants, landowners, etc. within it. I've found that having community support can make a big difference to the "little guys" of a niche market.

  5. I've been a member of the Second Life Affiliate Program for a while now via the Google Affliiate Network (GAN) option.  Apparently the Google Affiliate Network is retiring effective July 31, 2013.

Is there any news about switching over to another affiliate program?

I'm also on the GAN for Kobo and for the last two months have been receiving change information but I haven't heard anything from Linden Lab at all yet.

  6. I actually created a Jira ( Web-4417 ) back in January to address this issue.  Since then I've been using Land Impact.

Not sure what you can see of it now so here's the original description:

Now that Land Impact has been implemented as "Second Life's mechanism for calculating the computational weight of an object against land usage limits." it has become a necessary filter for the Marketplace Search.

Personally I would be fine with a simple update that would see the current label "Prim Count" changed to "Land Impact" but I'm not opposed to the creation of a new "Land Impact" searchable field.  The important thing is that Land Impact is included in a timely fashion, however it is done.

It may also be prudent to include a corresponding "See Description" checkbox similar to that which is used for Permissions.

  7. I use the same ad posters in the marketplace as I do for my inworld vendors and I wanted to be sure that people knew it was mesh before they purchased it so I included it on the posters.

Also, when you do a search for "mesh" on the marketplace you get a lot of sculpties mixed in (sigh) so it's easier to pick out the actually mesh items if it's listed on the poster.

I don't use "mesh" in the product name.

I do use mesh in keywords when it's appropriate.

The problem is I don't really know how many times I have been charged for what. Presumably the CT has all that data somewhere. So I don't know what exactly that I need to report and where. Which is why I am asking them.

I just got a refund, Pamela on something that I had not reported so hopefully yours will all be sorted out soon.

Would love to read that jira but Stasi Linden locked me out of the jira process a while back without any warning or explanation. Did any member of the commerce team make a comment on it or has it just been parked like other 99% ?

    No comments from LL.

Dakota Linden has made changes to it, mostly that have to do with duplicate jiras what were posted after this.  As you can imagine, people keep reporting the problem and this jira is buried since it is 2 years old.

  11. I'm still scratching my head over the Usage Requirements field.

The options are : None Unpacking Land Wearable

Where None is the default and generates the "Use It Now" message.

I am guessing that for things like furniture the correct option would be Land because even if it comes unpacked you still need a spot to rez the item and use it.  The description generated is "Land Required This item requires that you have access to land in Second Life in order to unpack and use it."

Is that how you interpret it?  If so, the number of items that actually fall under the default "Use it now" are rather limited as they would have to be both unpacked and wearable.

There's no way to know -- but I would not think a sim crash would affect inventory. Maybe, who knows?

I do have ppl who contact me over and over, who do not seem to understand that they have a persistant inventory problem.  I also have quite a few ppl who do not know about inventory search -- they poke around and don't see something so contact me, but don't realize that they could type a word in search.  Just so many things going on it is impossible to tell why someone can't find something. The most common one the last few days for me has been "I rezzed it inworld and it vanished."

I agree, Pamela.  There's just no way to know.  I suspect that they do have a persistant inventory problem and it really wouldn't be that cost effective for me to try to troubleshoot something like that for them.

Interesting about the "rezzed it inworld and it vanished" as I had a tenant tell me that recently.  She rents from me but what she rezzed wasn't one of my creations.  She apparently rezzed a boxed dress and it disappeared.  This happend to her twice.  Sigh.

  13. The customer bought another one from the SLM which showed up in the folder.

She says that the sim closed down right when she was opening the folder and she crashed.  When she returned the folder was empty and clearing cache plus a re-log didn't restore it.  Go figure.

I don't know if this is a SL fluke or what but I thought it was worth mentioning.

ETA: She also appears to be having other inventory problems so I don't know it that's related or not.
