  1. This is not what cultural appropriation means. Now if you went downtown, saw an Indian restaurant, liked the food, and then setup a restaurant next door and tried to sell the same food but also claim it was different, it was your own spin you see, not a copy at all. Then that is you appropriating someone else culture for your own economic benefit. People selling their own cultures things to other people is not it.
  2. Thank you - you understood the context of my question. I was looking for others' opinions on whether this was cultural appreciation or caricature.
  3. As an Asian person I also do not think my skin colour is yellow. I was using a term that I did not create the name of.
  4. You're welcome to think so, but my answer is no. As somebody who is Asian in real life, I have had my share of real-life encounters with non-Asians borrowing from Asian culture. At those times I have had to try to figure out the intent. Sometimes it is out of appreciation and the intensions were meant to be positive. Sometimes they are not. Sometimes I am not sure, and when I am not sure I ask people from the same community (in this case other people in SL) so I can get help to understand how others saw things.
  5. Yes, I think there is a difference. Using/changing to a different Asian SL skin is not the same as using their existing white SL skin that is part of the character, they've used in all their other Flickr posts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Examples_of_yellowface <-- thats where the term comes from. Instead of using an Asian actor, a white actor was used and they changed their appearance. I see the point of others - I also do not feel the creator intended to be disrespectful. BUT like when others use the word "Oriental" as this creator did for their photo, the people who use that word in this context don't always mean to be disrespectful, but that doesn't mean that the result could not be received as disrespectful.
  6. As mentioned in my OP I too love this person's content.
  7. I think I should have been clearer to ask that others look at the persons other work to understand the context of what I was asking. Yes, the title of "Feeling oriental" is part of where I'm coming from. It implies the person was making of version of the character they normally post to their flickr.
  8. I'm Filipino in RL so I'm not sure about what you're saying.
  9. I think the context of my question has not come across well. This person used their original SL skin that is of a white European appearing women (please see their other content for context), and then photoshopped 'Asian' features on to it ( monolid eyes and other small tweaks ). I think also the 'feeling Oriental' title is part of whats making me think yellowface. I am not asking about what I mention I realize is fairly common of people using SL skins of another race that doesn't match their own - see my KPOP example. @Lewis LuminosI get your point, but I think what I am seeing here is not the same, but I bring it up as a topic to check my feeling with what others feel when they compare this persons other flickr photo's to this post. I think there is a difference between painting a character of a specific race, and painting an existing character that appears of a different race and then painting a 'version' of that character as another race. I am wondering is it Yellowface if you retouch a photo of your SL character that is white, and add 'Asian' traits to make an 'Asian' version of that character - regardless of what race the person is in real life.
  10. Browsing the SL side of Flickr and seeing this made me start thinking. It's not uncommon in SL for people to make avatars that do not match their own race. The global appreciation of KPOP music has a lot of KPOP stans flocking to Mudskin to create avatars that look like their favourite KPOP idols for example. In my head I think this is fine, but then I see this post on Flickr and my brain says "thats yellowface". Then I wonder but what is it when your avatar wears a skin that does match your RL race? Are both not okay or is this flickr post different? Just wondering out loud if you can be considered doing yellowface when everything is virtual? PS I love the content of this Flickr user. They make fun and super realistic images that I enjoy. It's just this last post they did that made my brain thinking all these thoughts. PPS You might need to see their other photo's on Flickr to get the context.
  11. Maitreya Lara has the most support. If you are interested in the Petite option from Maitreya, I'd suggest then considering a different body - Meshbody Legacy Perky. Between the two smaller chest bodies, I'd say Perky gets more support than Petite. But with Maitreya it's an addon to the Lara body, whereas Meshbody sells Legacy as two versions - you'd need to buy 2 bodies, unlike Maitreya. The Legacy perky body can wear regular Legacy cloth, but you'll see the chest area won't match up perfectly. Really only a problem with tight fitting cloths like a bikini top. Boatoam has a free body skin to go with the head skin I mentioned above. Head skin is makeup free and has a browless option. Good starter, especially for the body skin. Also know that the better head skin places will draw a blending zone into their head skins, so their skin can match to somebody else's body skin. Like in the example of Boatoam, the body skin in 'esian' tone matchs perfectly with a Mudskin headskin in velour Porcelain tone. The blending zone ( neck fix ) of Mudskin makes it work. This also means if you see other head skins offering velour tones, the same trick can apply either if the skin has a built-in blender or a separate blender.
  12. Just to add to what others have said above. Like said above Lelutka is currently the most supported head maker, and I've noticed with Asian skins, most are created for the Ceylon head, but can work on others of course. Boatoam and Dernier have Asian skins and offer a good free skin each if you want something free to start as a reference. I think Mudskin ended their free Ravy skin they gave as part of the Lelutka Raven free head. I'm pretty sure this was one of the Ceylon based "Sunday" skins, as the skin and included shape I think actually work on the Ceylon head better than the Raven head. Another tip is that some skins come with makeup already on, which sounds convenient, but then as you explore things, and want to add your own makeup it becomes a problem. Mudskin offers cheaper "Sunday" skins that are based on their more expensive skins but "flattened" so the skin + makeup layers are merged to a single skin. These two offerings below from Boatoam and Dernier offer a base skin with no makeup - which sets you up nicely to play around with makeup. This is the Lelutka Raven head with Mudskin free Ravy skin - but this shape makes the head/skin look very different from the default shape with Raven head or even the Mudskin shape included with the Ravy skin. Mudskin and ODIO come with shapes for a younger K-pop sorta look, but there are also many shape creators (like the above) that also do that, so you're not limited to getting shapes from the Skin makers.
  13. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf4U7JOLmOO/ RAISSA skin from Velour. Maybe this skin using one of the darker tones? Using second photo as a reference for the facial look.
  14. I like this idea. Also wasn't the corn field sim a ban box of sorts at one time or was that just a story before it became a regular LL sim.
  15. The machine bans also got even easier when the Copybot viewers came out. This person likes to screen capture his exploits and post them to youtube, so can see he is using one of the Copybot viewers which has features to spoof hardware details sent by the viewer to LL.
  16. Yup that seems to be his weakness - no voice no fun. Unfortunately, it also means no fun for everyone else who enjoys the sim.
  17. I did not know that - Thank you. Very newbie question. Contacting Tommy Linden just as an IM in world, notecard or is there a better way?
  18. A permaban SL user that likes to troll a sim I often go to seems to have picked up new trick to avoid getting reported. He now appears in the sim in voice, but radar doesn't show him in the sim. He creates new accounts daily to come into the sim normally and then crash the sim - Barbarossa. Those can be reported, post sim crash when he returns. But then after a few minutes when that account is killed, he will return but only in voice with a different account which are around 2 weeks old. Right clicking on the account in the voice window, and reporting the account seems to not work I assume because when the Lindens check logs for the sim maybe it's because they can't confirm the account was in the sim? I keep hoping in the AR description that explaining to look at the screenshot to see the user is in the voice window, but yes not in nearby radar. But unlike his daily accounts that get killed, he seems to be able to return with his other older accounts on voice. He's been doing this for years and as of today he is up to account 1901. End result is post crashing the sim, the person can return and continue to be abusive over voice. Does anyone know how this is done. Is there a better strategy to better report when the user is only on voice? [edit] I should clarify that I was asking how to confirm if this was maybe a normal thing you could do with a third party viewer I wasn't aware of. If this is an exploit, I don't need details, but would like to confirm that it's an exploit and not a normal feature of a viewer.
  19. Right now, I use a location that starts with a B and is a ferry terminal. This location has become home to a bunch of white supremacist types. Most of whom daily create new accounts just to hang out in this sim. Is anyone aware if LL is aware and doing anything about these kind of users? ARing doesn't appear to do anything. I haven't used my account in a few years, so I think I missed a few years of history here with Infohubs and these kinds of people. Any recommendations on a better infohub to set as a home location? [ Update ] Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. You have all been really helpful.
