  1. Thanks Bigmoe. That's a lot like an online version of the in-world map function, so suffers from the same thing as the in-world map: it takes forever to load (even with my high-speed internet), and when zoomed out everything disappears. I'd love to find something close to a static world map, with clickable hyperlinks to regions. That would likely be a HUGE file, so like RL world maps there might have to be separate maps for each continent and ocean. This might be a project I'll have to build myself and throw online for anyone who wants it.

  2. Aloha all. I enjoy exploring SL by opening map (Control-M) and clicking on distant places to teleport to them. This is a great way to discover hidden gems, and to find regions that don't pay extra to be included in search results. Unfortunately map has had some problems recently, takes a long time to load even in my good computer, and at the best of times shows only a relatively small portion of the SL world. Does a clickable map exist somewhere on SL's website? Something like the map function in-world, but showing ALL regions?

Because SL is building new regions all the time I wouldn't expect such a page to be up-to-date all the time. But it sure would be a fun tool for exploration, like spinning a globe and picking a spot!

  3. Agreed Nuuanu, shopping on SLMP is frustrating. Thanks for the fun guide! Like you say it will be more useful to Polys than to your average North American or European :-)

And agreed AlohaShoyu, YumYum do some nice hairs! I use almost entirely DrLife hairs though, just because I have so many of them :-)  FWIW I use Maitreya Lara too, most of the time a Lelutka Simone head, and a shape I found at Sublime a long time ago that they no longer carry.

  4. Aloha everyone. I really enjoy places that look like they've been built on stilts over water. The Temple of Iris is a fun historic example, full of shops and homes (?) on stilts over water, all connected via a maze of piers / walkways. The only other place like this I've found is a small area in the great Kowloon region. I find enormous beauty in places like this, even if they're normally very impoverished and polluted in RL. Can anyone recommend other regions like this?

Just occurred to me that the new Florida-inspired Linden homes on stilts would be similar, but AFAIK their regions haven't been built yet.

  5. I spend what seems like a lot of time exploring. I Control-M to pull up Map, then click on a distant region to teleport to it. No idea what I'll find, and that leads to the joy of discovery. It's fun to stumble upon places that were probably busy ten years ago but are dead now, especially beaches, post-apocalyptic scenes, and vaguely Asian cities. It also shows how the build tech in SL has progressed over the years. I take a lot of photos, because even beautiful places come and go all the damn time.

  6. Han is so right! The vast majority of my Lindens go to tier (rent) on a property we "bought." I enjoy buying houses, so have a collection of them. Not all houses are expensive, but furnishing them can be!  I used to spend a lot on clothing, but after a while it's hard to find things NOT designed to appeal to hormonal teenage boys.

  7. Hi Tadrie,

Yes, the selection of skins for POC are an issue. The stores others have listed above have some nice ones to try, and I'd add Not Found too. In all cases, demo as many skins as possible, and grab one you like while it's still around... they come and go pretty frequently.

Be prepared for all skins to be one color all over. I have never found a skin anywhere that allows for melanin-free palms and soles. There are products on SL Marketplace that will make your soles red or dirty, but nothing that makes palms and soles pale and clean. :-(

  8. I've found the same thing when looking for places. I lucked out, finding most places by stumbling onto them inworld. So Waialae, what you might want to do is browse some of your fav regions and look for the (often terrible) for rent or sale signage.

  9. Wow Kytteh, I absolutely understand this frustration after dealing with a similar episode myself. I like to leave my homes open and welcome visitors, but do expect them to be respectful. When they start getting predatory I report and ban them, but they can still cam in or use other devices as you describe. IN SL it seems the best policy is to expect no privacy as Rolig said, and to be prepared to move from place to place. I have a Linden houseboat that became a target, so I moved to a new one... then that one became a target too. Crap. As a reasonable solution I bought a pretty house on SLMP, and some land to rez it on. I still leave the doors open, but have learned to love the house not the land it's on. That way I can move again when the need arises.

  10. While I support freedom of speech, I understand that this is best experienced by people with open minds, not by people already convinced that their opinion is the only right one. We are all individuals with our own opinions, and we need to respect that. It's important to recognize that - if we are compelled to do so - we are more likely to impact someone else's opinion by listening to them and speaking with them, not by planting a sign. The size of the sign is unimportant; small or large it is unlikely to change anyone else's opinion.

Because SL residents come from all over the world, signs about particular parties or candidates may often be meaningless. For example, people outside Bolivia may not recognize Jeanine Áñez; people outside Thailand may not recognize Prayut Chan-o-cha, and outside USA may not recognize Trump. Rather than signs supporting politicians, it's likely more effective to display signs supporting political theories, e.g. human rights, press freedom, feeding the hungry, etc. For anyone who feels they must plant a sign, plant one that mentions morals and ethics you believe in, not a sign with someone else's name. Signs supporting any particular candidates or parties may be planted proudly by a property owner who identifies with them, but to outsiders these people are sometimes perceived as trolls. This is true no matter the candidate or intention of the sign.

Politics are just one small aspect of our experience as human beings. We have many more commonalities than differences. It seems logical then to focus on our commonalities, on things that bring us together rather than separate us. Having said that, I have to admit that when I see signs on a business that oppose my own point of view I am disappointed and am unlikely to support that business. I don't want to drop Lindens in the pocket of someone who may be working to destroy good as I define it. Maybe economics alone is a good reason for people to not have signs promoting a party or candidate.

  11. This whole discussion is incredibly sad and would likely be so to anyone not white. I understand the desire as noted above to prevent cyborgs from overrunning a 1920s sim, but to outright ban a race or gender or any other descriptor is absolutely discriminatory. Yes, that may be allowed by SL's TOS so that artists can maintain an ambiance on their sim, but it's still an ugly reflection of how desperately we need to evolve in RL. It's time for us to allow cyborgs into our 1920s sims, to allow LGBTQ people into our bakeries, to start celebrating our differences rather than hating them, banning them, and pretending they are unacceptable or don't even exist.

  12. Have to be honest, I leave any sim that auto-plays Christmas music. It's annoying, like when you walk into a store (remember when we used to do that?) and they're playing non-stop corny Christmas tunes behind a table of laughing Santa statues, a display of automated greeting cards, a shelf of "holiday flavored" coffees, and a selection of televisions all playing Frosty the Snowman. AAAGGGHHH!

  13. Aloha Yamata2018. A LOT depends on what specific ethnicity you would like your avatar to mimic. For example, Russia, India, and Viet Nam are all Asian, but people look very different. Maybe your avatar looks hapa (mixed race). Look through mesh head shapes; you will find many that approximate an ethnicity. Once you have that head and shape you can edit the shape to personalize it. Genesis, Lelutka, and Vista all do heads with nice Asian shape options. Good luck!

  14. Aloha. I became a premium member nearly one year ago, and would like to renew. I logged into my account, and no renew options are shown. I could buy premium again, but this is only available as a membership change (upgrade / downgrade), not as a continuation. I don't see any documentation that my premium membership will be auto-renewed. So how are premium memberships renewed?  Thanks in advance for your wisdom.
