Proposal --  Do Away with tip jars.  Let the avatars arrive at a venue, give them 5 minutes to decide if they want to stay and listen.

How about no. People goto venues for a lot of reasons and not always to see the performers. If I dont like the performer I don't tip. Example some friends want to go along to a club. The dj plays stuff I don't like. I merely turn them off and listen to my own sounds while hanging with the friends I am there to be with. The venue gains by having a higher pop making it seem popular, I gain from hanging with friends. The performer loses nothing as I wouldn't have stayed under your proposal. All it would do is stop me hanging with friends and mean any venue that implemented it would not be visited and we would instead go to ones who did not implement it of which there would be many unless you are suggesting it should be mandatory for all sims to charge people in which case the answer is doubly no as I would then have to charge my friends for visiting me in my home

  2. A little less of the right wing hate here please, most consider me on the extreme of the right wing as an economic liberal and a social liberal (liberal in the classic sense not liberal in the progressive sjw who hijacked the word while being neither sense) and frankly couldn't care less about creed, colour or sexuality of anyone or what they do as long as its doing no harm to others

  3. Good to hear, the vampire system is much maligned and understandably so from what I gather about the bite spam at first. However it has to be said one thing it does provide is a ready made social group to slot into which can be good for a new player. That is why I originally joined bloodlines. I had a large group of people to do things with, a sim I belonged on, people I could ask for help when I got stuck. I joined a clan at 3 days old and I didn't regret it still got a large number of friends from those days

  4. One way of helping sl grow is all of us that wish to see it grow being nice to newbies.

For example if I am somewhere and not busy and I see a newbie I will usually im them, say welcome, give them some landmarks to places I know give out stuff like a 500l$ in store credit to accounts under 30 days old. Then engage them in conversation, find out what interests them and point them at places they might like to visit. Ask them if they are finding anything difficult and see if I can help that by answering some questions or walking them through how to do something. All it costs is a little time and patience . Often they still won't stay but you have probably raised the chance of them staying

*check they are really new - for some reason a 1 day old char on a starter avi will get quite indignant that you offer help if its just a new alt*

  5. With all this talk of vampires and spam biting I would like to set the record straight a little.

Confession I used to play bloodlines but havent for 9 months or so now and no intention of starting again.

Most clans now have pretty strict rules on biting and if someone is offering spam invites then that is grounds for kicking them from clan. The rules are usually along the lines of you may only offer a bite after explaining bloodlines to them and if you plan to bring them into the clan. The clans did mostly try and clean up the spam bite problem which occurred mainly in the early days of bloodlines and while they haven't eliminated it entirely it should at least be vastly reduced in scope.

I have brought a couple of newbies to SL in the last couple of months and neither of them has reported having been asked for a bite or claw at all so I hope the spam bites are largely a thing of the past

i really don't see why they should get a subsidy, they make money with the things they do.

Let's go give wallmarkt, Philiips, GM also free land, build them factories and not pay taxes? ... i have a quite simple point of view in this: if they can't pay the cost of the sim/land/store, with their sales, they should limit their amount of land, withdraw to MP or quit.

For what purpose need most stores whole sims?... none.. there's a buildings with a size that can keep thousends of people and there's nobody....

For some creators are like saints... but it are businesses.

They do make beautiful things, i totally agree, but roleplayers and photographers could give some donations for that, creating things isn't free, so shouldn't be the use.

RP sims rarely make money. I am working on one at the moment. We anticipate it being a net cost to the two of us creating it of a 100$ or so a month. We certainly do not expect to break even let alone make a profit on it. Talking to other people that run rp sims this is pretty usual. Why you think they make money is a little bit of a mystery and please dont cite bloodlines. That is really not an rp system for most that partake and even there most clan sims will be losing money not making it

Not arguing here for a subsidy btw just correcting the myth that rp sims make a profit

You can't assume it would be that simple to change how the database is operated on or how anything outside of it might be connected. Development (especially for systems this old) is rarely even remotely easy.

You don't need the viewer to download anything related to names. The avatar name inworld is just a string that's sent to you just the same it always has been.

No you are right I can't assume for definite but from what Theresa linked it implies the account/avatar table has a foreignkey Id for linking to a LastName table which is used to append a textualised last name to the account. Given that as long as the progammers didnt do anything too silly such as making the foreign key contraint an 8 bit integer then we can assume all the last name lookups would likely still work or at most need minor tweaking. Is is supposition yes and it could be vastly more complex from the linked information however it sounds like it shouldn't be too difficult

  8. While empty land can be depressing I can see the option to decorate causing a few drama's. For example person A in one corner thinks mlp scenery is simply wonderful. Person b in the other corner logs onto find the intervening abandoned land "tastefully ponified"

Are you going to download all that information to everyone's viewers on login (and upon additional names being added, of course) or are you going to have everyone request lookups from it every time someone with a last name appears? The database crashed when Oskar was poking at it during that meeting.

Sigh you really think they download everyones first name now when you log in or just load the names of the people in the region you are in. The time difference to join the two tables in the query of names of people in my vicinity is nano seconds if its even measurable

Last names aren't coded as a string of letters in your avatar information like your "first" name is; they're a numeric value that is looked up from a database. This means that either the name system would have to be completely re-written or the last name database would balloon. System described in these minutes starting at about [15:42]:

    http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Beta_Server_Office_Hours/Minutes/2012-03-08

assuming a varchar[50] for the surname field and an int id field in the last name table and further assuming 50 million customers flocking to create a last name we are talking of a database expansion of something in the order of 2.5 gb of data. Its really a trivial amount frankly and not an excuse

You can do that already. Just make a username composed of a first and a last name and put them together without a space. Then, once inworld, change your display name to include the space, if you want.

Here's a few I tried, matched with my first name, paired with last names mainly borrowed from people at work

    • MattyHunter
    • MattyMorris
    • MattyRushton
    • MattyMackenzie
    • MattyFowler
    • MattyClark
    • MattyMitchell
    • MattyLogan
    • MattyBell
    • MattyRogers
    • MattyHeath
    • MattySpencer

I got bored. They were all available except MattySmith, which was presumably was claimed by a Doctor Who fan. All of them normal, ordinary, short names.

    Simples!

points at name exactly what I did. The point I was making is the surname I wanted may well have not been on that linden list. I am quite happy for people to have surnames as I have said over and over but all I said is for those who dont want one from the list to make it optional . My fear was LL would listen to all the we want surnames back crowd and decide to do some pr and give us all a choice of surname. Nothing more nothing less

    Oh for...

Since no one suggested making it mandatory and the Lindens already stated that it would be optional...

The entire tangent has served no point whatsoever.

What an absolute waste of time and thread space.

No one made you take part and the whole thing was people telling me what a good thing it was when all my initial post was fine as long as they dont make it mandatory to pick a surname. You say its not going to happen so why the hell have you all been telling me I am wrong for wanting it. Not me wasting your time its you wasting mine

Yes, you can see the resident tag above people's heads, lol. I'm not being nitpicky. I use the latest Firestorm viewer, and to NOT see resident, you have to turn the option off by checking the box. It is on by default. In Firestorm it is under  preferences, then general, towards the bottom, the option is "Trim 'Resident' from Legacy names".

So, uhh, yeah, you CAN see it, everyone can, until they turn it off. I know you don't care what others see, KanryDrago, this isn't a response for you, I get your position loud and clear :)  it's for everyone else that believes no one can see their Resident last name.

Then I obviously have it off even though I have never bothered turning it off. Same when I downloaded the sl viewer just now and logged on without changing anything
