I am generally pretty good at keeping my inventory clean, but I did get a bit lazy these last couple of months. This thread inspired me to clean things up and prepare for the new year. Here's a couple of screenshots of my personal organization tactics.

thank you so much for posting your screen shots. it gives the rest of us hope. you have done an amazing job of organizing your inventory.  now that's a service SL needs. :)   i wish we could have a 'guest' login to our account approved by LL for a short period of time. i'd hire someone full time to manage mine. as long as they could only access the inventory and not im's or contact lists :)

Suppose someone opened a restaurant, and posted a sign that said... "no blacks allowed".

Someone else opens a restaurant next door that says "everyone welcome"

If everything else was the same, (quality of service, price, etc) which restaurant will thrive and which one will close?

fairly sure that if you went to the 'wrong' restaurant your family/community/coworkers/etc would have someone to say. we live in a social society.  no one wants to be outcast for 'doing what they feel is right'.  which is why people usually work with the government to chance these things.  think back to 1940.  how many blacks would have had the money to setup a private airline?  so if an airline put up the words "whites only".  does that mean only white people would be able to take airplanes to travel? someone who is black COULD setup an airline.  what is the chances of that person being able to secure the financing/approvals in, say Montana. it is much easier to say that the market will correct itself than to have it in real life.  there are still places that do not welcome people of color, even if the government has said they must allow them in.  just because you allow someone in, doesn't mean you are nice or welcoming in any way.

but anyway, i'll stop commenting now so it's not a BillieJo and Lost thread LOL. others may want to comment on things.

take care BillieJo, and happy new year.

So there's no misunderstanding, my statement included the situation of posting the words "Whites Only" or "Blacks Only" on a private business establishment, either in SL or RL.

The marketplace should decide if a business that restricts its customer base should thrive or fail.

in a perfect world yes a market place would decide.  unfortunately from history, we know that it is not true. marketplaces/finances are usually controlled by one group or another. that group usually has a privileged position in society.  that also normally leverages it's privileged position to control the access to opening new locations.  in real life, the people that could put up the 'whites only' or 'blacks only' signs in a town, may also control many other functions in that town.  permit control, inspections, etc.

if the market places could control equal access, then governments around the world would not have had to get involved in giving people equal access to basic human rights and dignities.

make no mistake, i realize fully well that people don't change their nature just because they are in SL and not in real life. People that would discriminate against others in real life will definitely discriminate against others in Second Life.  Our behavior doesn't change just because we are in a virtual world.

I really do wish that you are right and that a market could dictate which businesses survive. Unfortunately, humans don't really have a history of doing the right thing. Marketplaces reflect upon our society as a whole.

and i think that is very wise.

Many restricted areas would disappear when they would be forced to open for all.

For example... i would never put one foot again in S****rkz, Wh****ck G*C and more again if women were allowed.... And still it are, more or less, public places

[EDIT} i have NOTHING against women!!!!!.. don't take that line wrong please....lol

I agree... it's like dress code enforcement, not so much discrimination. Because you can be anyone you want in Second Life. Should furries band together and make a lawsuit against everyone who hangs a 'no furries' sign on their door?

i think there should be a differentiation of what is legal and what is moral.

legally there are certain things you cannot discriminate on.  women, skin color, etc.  furries are not a protected group.

Morally  - what is legal may not be moral. for example , legally you may be able to discriminate against furries but would that be morally right. well , that would depend on your own morals.  some people justify it by saying it's just a character, others may realize there is an actual human being that you are discriminating against behind the screen.

good thing is that in SL, even if a group is discriminated against, there are always places they can go to where they are totally welcomed.  everyone can find a place where they are treated with respect and welcomed :).

yes one should be able to totally discriminate based on any criterion they choose in deciding who they will allow on their property as customers.

I'm gonna get royally roasted for saying this but I think business owners should have that same right in real life too.

the reply below is not directed AT you billijo, but at people that like to discriminate:

absolutely they should be allowed to discriminate. i mean who wants blacks, Chineses, Woman or any other group they don't like on their property.  i'm with you.  all those women marching in the streets were silly for wanting the right to be treated equally were silly. same with those black people in the US wanting to sit anywhere on the bus or use the same restrooms.  seriously anyone should be allowed to discriminate based on anything they want to.  because we all know that human beings are fair and considerate creatures that will care about others.  *end sarcasm*   <- put here as some people MAY miss it.

businesses in SL that discriminate may be able to do it for a long time as people treat it like a 'game' or a 'sim'. but business owners should be aware that they can actually be sued in California courts for discrimination and could cost them tens of thousands of real life dollars to fight it. not sure why they would want to take the risk.  might be easier to just write, "we welcome everyone but most of our customers are "XXXX"".

if you are not sure if a business policy is wrong, try substitute the words "black only" or "white only"  and see if it still sounds right.  an easy way to figure things out.

as you may tell, i may have strong feelings about people discriminating.  your feelings may differ. you may be fine with people discriminating on others.  until you face it yourself.  I respect everyone's choice to care about only themselves but personal i prefer my world and my SL to be a bit more inclusive.

It's not about not helping new members, but there are special regions for that. Problem is more that new members run to adult sims even before they know how to put shoes on... they don't want help, they want sex... and so soon as possible.

And.. keep 500 out .. it's perhaps a bit harsh,  but ever had a flock of griefers entering your sim?.... you really don't miss that 500 if you'r under such attacks.

Also the word "discrimination" ... come on...

honestly that is what it is ...here is the definition:

"treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: "

i did mention in my comment that sim owners pay for their sims and can discriminate based on avatar age as it's not a human rights protected area in most countries.  simply calling it what it is as per it's definition.

this is just a general comment but i do find it interested that people that are ok with the act of discriminating against others (not saying you Alwin) usually find it hard to have it called discrimination.  i'm sure there are much other words that people use to make it sound better.

in the end, every person in SL is allowed to run their sim as they want.  some will discriminate against furies, babies , newer avatars or many other groups.  as long as they don't discriminate based on sex, race or other protected grounds, i may not like it but it's not my sim so not my choice to make.  the people being discriminated against can always find many other sims to go to where they feel more welcomed.

one interesting thing to note for myself, a lot of the sims that i had gone to when i first started that had these rules.  i ended up putting them on a blacklist for myself.  have actually never gone back.  as someone that gets regularly discriminated against daily in real life, i refuse to normally frequent businesses that discriminate.  i've found that mentality carries into SL for me.  it's interesting as i never realized i was doing it subconsciously until this topic here.  it's interesting what you learn about yourself when reading forum topics and thinking about your own replies.

I vote we put all new AFK sex places RIGHT by the exit of the newbi rez zones.  that way they can have their Slex and don't even have to look for sims for it.  that way once they are done and all Slex'd out, they can go into SL properly.   *starts passing out a hat so they can collect lindens to purchase properties around starting areas. wonders if some of the male/female/furry/vampy avatars would mind going afk in those places....as a 'social service'*.

Have those new accounts done anything bad to you...or do you just feel they aren't worthy to visit your place?

Syo, when i first started in SL i used to hate the "no avatars under 30 days " rule so many sims had.  i can't imagine doing that to others either. i know an annoying person could use it to mess around but honestly keeping 500 people out to deal with 1 bad person is what really made me mad back then.   i still don't like when people discriminate against new people rather than helping them.  i always try to help new people as SL has a huge learning curve and i want people to stay...not leave due to things that make their new SL harder.

but, i guess everyone is welcome to make whatever rules they want in their sims.  they pay the bills so they can decide who comes onto their land.

  10. Candice, that looks amazing. i love the look of the character and the way the AO looks is great.  a friend was looking for something similar so i'll pass her the info you posted.

i'm hoping the frosty breath is an add on that is not part of the ao.  i live in the cold as it is so never want to see frosty breath LOL.

    DEMO FIRST!!!

do not buy anything that does not have a demo.

demo, demo and demo some more

but take a screenshot of what you had on your char before doing demos

    so critical

also, if after the demo it messes up your skin, don't panic. simply use the redelivery terminal at your body and head store to send yourself new boxed copies of both and replace the ones you are wearing, that fixes 90% of issues.

    hey. ty for the answers.

    At first my avi:

I use the Catwa Daniel bento head.

For the body I use Signature Gianni or Slink mesh.

The price isn't important. I want that at any cost xD

What it should be in the end Mhm.. Something between a human albino and a Vampire. If you may know the Albino skin for females AII did? This goes into the right direction.

I guess Beautiful creepy describes it best.

Sorry I totally forgot to tell you about my avatars parts xD

    no worries at all.

please check nivaro. I know they used to have a high res vampire albino type skin that you could get in different shades and it worked great for the signature body and Daniel head.  the signature body has omega built in and the danel head you can get an applier for it for catwa from nivaro but it also has omega.

get the demo and try it out then let us know if you need more help or if worked for you.

Are you in a mesh avatar - head/body? It will be easier to send suggestions if we know what the canvas is that we’re painting.

Iridas, as Norajulian advised, if you give some more info, people may be able to give better suggestions.

please advise if you are using a system avatar or mesh

for mesh things that might be helpful are:

    • will this be a human char or a fantasy char like vampire/elf/fae/etc
    • what kind of body :name and manufacturer as not all will be compatible for the skins available
    • what kind of face :name and manufacturer as not all will be compatible for the skins available
    • is there a particular type of look you are going for?  for example as a monster, as a noble person, etc
    • what price range are you looking to spend as skin prices can vary from 50 to unlimited. so if you let us know your budget, people can give you some places you may want to check
    • anything else you can think of that might help as more info is always better to have when assisting someone. saves sending them to 15 different stores when 2 would have worked.

please note I listed face and boy separate as some faces do not mesh with some bodies so the skin might work on one but not both

How the f..k do you play Angry Birds on that?

ya don't.  and also, it was so hard to hit on girls when we were young.

so it was easier to type boobs as you could use the number keys alone for that.

it's why we had to actually talk to make dates instead of this swiping stuff for booty calls.

I guess I’ll take a crack at it.

Kuso makes really good animations for a reasonable price. 600-650 for a whole hud. They also sell individuals if you’re into making your own hud.

Voir is also cheap  and very good and has an ao called “almost still” and that’ll run you about 350 on mp. I’m not sure if they have a store where you can try them out though.

the voir store is here in SL

    http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Noguchi/172/68/59

they have a new "almost still" mens bento ao that has different animations for flying, walking, etc.  it looks neat. for $350, the price is not bad. considering it's for bento.  will have to check Kuso as well.

it looks so weird right?  like they are trying to pick a fight with someone.  kind of makes me thing that avatar should be wearing this tshirt to complete the image

Some of the ones with a lot of movements look really cool and all, but I just want to be a lot more subtle... a lot more like real life.

i'm so with you there.   i tried some of the mens ones and it was so weird.  they all look like they drank a bit too much steroid juice.  they all look like they are compensating for something. kind look like they are made for men that need to touch themselves every few minutes to confirm they are still men.  i keep getting the feeling they are made for little boys who think men just grab themselves all the time.  grr.

i would love to see a male AO that was reasonable and not overly macho.  just a simple one.

  19. i would like to know the answer to this one as well. most of the AO's i see when they are standing around do either the porn star pouty walk around or the "i've really got to pee but can't find a bathroom"  sugared up moving in place.  LOL

would love to gift an AO to someone who's avatar runs me off buildings and pathways with their aggressive moves.

I found this really illuminating in this discussion.

i've been online for many, many years in the online worlds and i've seen people shattered by how they are treated.  those were never really weak willed people (as others like to call them).  they were simple human beings that got caught up in someones words and started being vulnerable to that persons words.  a heart break in a online world is much worst than in a 'real world' because in the online world, the person may never see a picture of you or know what kind of conditions you live in or grew up in.  but they do know you at your very essence as they fall in love with your words.  with the idea of 'you' .  with your hopes, dreams, and everything else that you share. so it's a much greater betrayal for many people than someone not liking them for the way they look as our looks are given to us by the genetic lottery based on who we are born to.  but everything inside us, our thoughts, are purely chosen by us. :)

i always take care with people's emotions in the virtual worlds for that very reason.  picking up the pieces of a broken virtual hear is very, very difficult.

Thinking of the people you encounter as if they were NPCs in your personal game is still treating then badly, no matter how polite you are in doing so.

May I suggest a different mantra? Someone made a sign saying this: "The only real things in Second Life are our feelings, so please take care of each other."

Care about the person, not their skin colour or their biological gender or the shape of their avatar. Who we are isn't in the externals.

the bold part above is what people need to remember.  that NPC you meet is not really an NPC.  every interaction affects a human being behind a screen somewhere. the moment someone sees them as a character in a game and you are not in a RP area, then you are doing a disservice to them no matter how you treat them.

when we treat people like NPC's , it's easier for us to justify doing bad things to them or ignoring them.  it also means that you would simply be in Sl for your own personal pleasure rather than being in it to be part of a community.  in that case, i would recommend that anyone that wanted to do that should go play a RPG instead as its' what they are looking for.  in SL, a portion treat it as a game but many , many more, treat it as a community.  and those people, don't need to be played with.
