  1. Hate to burst people's bubbles, but SL is nothing like the current crop of metaverses.  It's ancient and outdated.

SL will never be a true open grid metaverse.  It has always been a virtual world closed off from everything else.  It's actually quite limited and centralized.

Upcoming metaverses such as Zuckerberg's Horizon, or Decentraland, will have interoperability with other metaverses.  In other words, cross-metaverse bridges, where you will be able to teleport your avatar, clothing, objects, inventory, and so on, between multiple metaverses, using these bridges.  All of this is already underway with organizations, such as OMI, to make a standardization for Web 3.0 and metaverses.  Sort of like how the W3C formed to make the internet standardized.

Imagine being able to travel back and forth from your favorite sim in SL to some other metaverse that's holding a conference or concert, all while taking the same SL avatar.

I would prefer using my semi-realistic SL avatar in VR Chat, instead of an anime avatar (no offense to VR Chat).  In my opinion, SL has the best skins, shapes, hair, clothing, and so on, but they can't be shared across metaverses which is a shame.

It's basically going to be like OpenSim, hypergrid, and Kitely's marketplace, except it's not confined within the OpenSim software.

Think of it like being able to travel back and forth between portals in SL <-> IMVU <-> VR Chat <-> Sansar.  (please don't compare the quality between these, I'm just giving an example)

Not only that, but third party marketplaces such as Unity, CGTrader, TurboSquid, Fivver, already exist, and SL creators won't be limited to the SL marketplace anymore because all these other metaverses will attract more people and more sales.  It's already happening to some degree where SL creators sell virtual items in other worlds, such as IMVU.

I know a lot of SL residents get defensive about their first love of virtual worlds, but SL is not the future.

SL will eventually end up like Myspace, Blockbuster, and Gamestop.  Linden Labs needs to adapt or be left behind.  I know they tried with Sansar but it had many other issues besides early adoption of VR tech.

  2. It's kind of sad that his High Fidelity project failed.  It was way ahead of it's time with blockchain and VR.  I was hoping it would succeed but it just wasn't good enough for users and creators.  Everything, from the UI to the building tools, was difficult to use.

The only VR world with some success from that era was VR Chat (mostly because of the memes).  All the others pretty much failed, such as Sansar, NeosVR, AltspaceVR, etc.

It's too bad Linden Labs sold Sansar though because it could've been retooled and reconfigured for the modern metaverse with it's own blockchain and cryptocurrency.

    Perhaps an SL2?  🤷‍♂️

    Gacha's are not going anywhere.

Even now behind the scenes, people are already working on a solution. It's not that hard to just show people the item they will receive if they pull on the machine. Problem solved. No more random chance.

You can see what you are paying for just like a vendor. The next item changes after each purchase and they can choose to buy it or walk away and let someone else buy it. The only downside is the machine can only be used by one person at a time. Better than nothing at all.

This is probably the best solution currently.  They would essentially work like Lucky Chairs.

Dumbest choice ever! Not only are you taking away OUR right to do what we want with OUR Lindens but you are also taking away a large chunk of finances from countless SL businesses. Are you going to help those businesses when they lose that large sum of money because you decided to follow the RL idiocy to control what people do with their money? SL use to be a bastion of give no *****s, bucking RL idiocy and let people do what they want within the rules given to us by LL. This was NOT a very well thought out "choice". There will ALWAYS be forms of gambling no matter what you do. You can't stop it. Stop following RL and do your own thing, like you've always been good at SecondLife. Or your going to keep hemorrhaging players.

It's out of their control.  Certain US states and certain countries do not allow online gambling.  Linden Lab could be sued and fined for breaking the law.

Today PaleoQuest started a weekly payout of 50 $L for completing the 5 quests, down from 100 $L up to now.  Have not see any announcement from LL about cutting the payout in half yet.  Everything about Linden Realms and Paleoquest suggest LL is discouraging players, by making the time spent in the game not worth it.  A result of new ownership counting the pennies?

AND, Linden Realms reduced the payout for completing the 4 quests to only 25 $L per week, from 50 $L/week.  The higher payouts have been in effect since both games started.  Linden Labs must be in financial trouble if they felt they were losing too many lindens with the old payouts.

Or they just want to close down both games, since then they can sell the regions to paying customers.

I just got back into SL again and just noticed these changes. It was my only source of income in SL and now they halved it.  It used to be $150 per week if you did both weekly quests but now it's $75 linden a week.  I thought $150 was a good compromise, but $75 is paltry and you can't really buy anything anymore.

I can't find any explanation either.  This company is definitely not being transparent which is is disappointing.

Simple solution: get rid of usernames.

Tomorrow at 9am, everyone has a display name only - and you cannot have a display name someone else is already using.

No thanks.  I like the ability to change display names for RP reasons.  I also like using them for fun and flavorful text such as titles or other symbols.  If you take them away, people will start using titlers which would add more to the script count.

  7. I always see this topic but I don't understand the overzealous fascination with last names.  Granted, i wasn't around back then, but the current system works fine as it is.  We can always put last names in our display name if it's really that important to people.   I do wish they would get rid of the Resident tag though.  It seems unnecessary but i'm sure there's probably some technical reason why they are required.

Perhaps i'm not understanding this issue clearly, but can somebody explain why they want them so badly.  😐

  8. The entire marketplace needs an overhaul.  It's outdated and inefficient and makes it cumbersome to find anything specific.  The MP is filled with older stuff from 15 years ago which makes it even worse to find stuff that is new, and even using the filters doesn't always work.  It would make sense to prioritize it since it generates money for LL, but i wouldn't hold my breath.

  9. SL is stagnant, not strong.  I think it's safe to say there hasn't been any user growth in years.  It's to be expected though since SL is 16 years old now.  The userbase is also old and i'm guessing the average age is 40+ by now.  The youth today doesn't know about SL or virtual worlds.  They know about Fortnite and VR.

Not to go off topic, but LL messed up with Sansar.  They could've used Sansar to bring in a new generation of teens and young adults, as well as the existing SL userbase.  Except it didn't happen for various reasons.  They pretty much failed on the VR front and alienated their core SL base, which left Sansar empty.  If they would've catered to their existing SL base, they could've at least had some people in Sansar still.

  10. The entire unpacking system is a mess because of various scripts and rezzing methods over time, and they all overlap each other.  Perhaps some older SL'ers can explain why things need to be boxed in the first place.  The entire process would be much easier if everything were placed in folders.

This is the front page of Secondlife.com

These pages exist to attract new users, and to give those who have just started out pointers as to what they can do.

Moaning that LL don't advertise SL is pointless when this is where those adverts would drop them.

We really need to talk about this.

Some of those options aren't so bad for attracting new people.  I think listing Real Estate, Business, and Education for new people is too advanced for them.  Creativity too, since you need to learn how to build and use 3rd party apps.

You said you believed that us naughty deviants shouldn't be allowed on the grid with all the normal people. I'm not sure how that could possibly have been misconstrued.

I never said that should've happened from my own personal viewpoint.  I followed up with a second post clarifying what i meant.  Hope that's clear enough unless you want to go in circles.

    Here's my followup quote:

Because regardless of your personal opinions, sex has always been a taboo subject in societies, past and present.  I should've been more clear, but i meant from a business perspective, and the safest move would've been separating accounts.

Look at it from a business viewpoint.  Imagine if a popular brand such as Nike or Sony were in SL.  You really think they want their businesses associated with a virtual world that allows BDSM, rape, and *****?  The backlash and boycotts wouldn't be worth it for them.

Why would you want to segregate Adults from the rest of the grid. Kinda unfair for the people who keep their settings to adult, and maybe want to go to an event, that is set to g or m, or even a club like that. You are limiting fun because you don't like adult accounts.

A lot of people are misconstruing of what i believe.  Personally, i wouldn't want separate accounts.  I'm just trying to convey, what i see as a mistake, from a business standpoint.  /shrug
