  1. I think people are getting confused by real life and second life here.

In real life for example some actors have been cast in roles that were designed for a demographic that they are not a member of. In the past this was not considered a problem as actors were actors and such like. However in more enlightened times it has been pointed out that those actors of the actual demographic should be cast instead. This is a good thing as those actors are given work and the more popular actors still have work to do.

In second life you can be whatever you want to be. Your avatar is not tied to your real life physical look - unless you want it to be. If you choose to tie your real life look to your second life look you have totally no right to expect everyone else to do the same though.

I see no problem whatsoever with avatars in second life being from a different demographic as their real life controller - heck they can even be a totally different species! As long as they are not ridiculing that demographic then it is perfectly fine and is in fact what second life is for - exploration, imagination, creation and fun.

When people adopt a demographic with the sole aim to ridicule that demographic then that crosses a line.

Remember folks second life is not real life - you really can't teleport or fly all by yourself you know.

  2. MP transactions go back to the beginning because that have to - otherwise you can't get a redelivery.

People can download their own L$ transactions as a CSV file and then they can have them stored for as long as they like. Many people download them just for the purpose of being able to go back further than LL allows them to do so.

Yes the L$ transactions probably are still stored for everyone in the back end but I would expect that the database is so vast that running queries against an unfiltered and unoptimised subset would highly inefficient on server load.

  3. As others have said the option to hide the residents creation date would result in other problems - like scripts not being able to calculate avatar age so you find yourself unable to access some places - or worse it causes the scripts to fail because the function now returns a null instead of an expected value.

You could put some post-it notes on your screen where you avatar age is displayed in your profile and then you are all fixed :)

  4. If you have changed your display name within the previous seven days then you will not be given the option to change it again until those seven days have elapsed.

If you change your display name using the website then be aware that the actual display name change seems to take longer to show if you go that route instead of changing via the profile route. I guess the web doohickey has to do more work?

  5. Second Life has a very steep learning curve. It was a lot easier before the advent of mesh bodies, heads and clothing.

To take the suggestion of how difficult is it to produce a guide on how to wear a new bit of clothing for a new resident.

Well - it's actually pretty darn hard and that's due to the immense amount of variables around what sort of clothing is it, what body is it designed for. Does the resident need to apply any alpha layers and if so is that by a HUD or by wearing an object or system layer. The complications go on and on and on.

It really was easier when everyone had system avatars - ok we did not look all that pretty with hindsight but it was easy to help out a new resident.

Hopefully there may be some glimmer of hope on the horizon with the NUX avatars as I am pretty darn sure LL will make them easy to understand for a total new resident.

I hate that my profile is outside of the grid..

If you go to https://my.secondlife.com/settings/privacy you can elect to make parts of the web profile visible to everyone, nobody, second life or friends only. As I avoid the web profiles totally and only wish people within Second Life to be able to find and interact with me I have mine set to...

    Feed - Nobody

    About - Second Life

    Real World - Second Life

    Interests - Second Life

    Groups - Second Life

    Picks - Second Life

    Follow Info - Nobody

Post on your feed - Nobody

Note that if you make parts which I have listed above as Second Life visible to nobody when it will remove you from the in world SL search and could result in problems so if in doubt leave as Second Life because that way only a Second Life user can view it.

  7. Changing the profile in world has always been the way to do it - until LL embarked upon the experiment to make SL more like a social media and have a web profile. That experiment failed and whilst some may have found it was handy to upload a (low quality) profile photo via the web interface it is finally being (slowly) removed.

  8. Height has been off in SL since it started and can be blamed on one thing - the over the shoulder camera having a high z axis default offset.

This meant that "normal" height homes resulted in the camera showing the upper floor when your AV was downstairs. Homes became bigger - AVs then looked small against huge walls - AVs slowly crept up in size.

17 years later we have the land of mostly human giants and the little people who rightly call themselves "normal" size.

  9. My guess is that contest boards do not use display names because display names are not unique so you could have two (or more) display names exactly the same displayed and no way of knowing which was which. You also have display names that use non-standard characters which the fonts used on contest boards would not be able to display at all.

  10. Facebook do not permit profiles for people that do not exist so you are not allowed (by their rules) to have a profile for your Second Life avatar. The way around that (according to their rules) is to set up and manage a page for the fictional avatar. Your real life profile manages and page and you are able to post as the fictional avatar but not "like" or use other features.

You can switch out of S mode in Windows settings and there is no charge for it.

You are right! Seems that MS decided to withdraw their upgrade fee. However even if the OP laptop gets "proper" windows 10 I suspect that SL with perform like an old stop motion movie. Slimline laptops are not a great idea for "gaming" despite what the ads may tell you.

  12. That laptop runs Windows 11 S mode - that means it will simply not run any application you try to install from anywhere other that he Microsoft Store. The only way around that would be to buy a license for Windows 11 normal or pro on top of the laptop itself. So no - as it stands that laptop will not run Second Life because it is not available from the Microsoft Store.

I can confirm and I'm in France. Set a new photo in your SL profile or in your RL profile is still free.
    - Click on your photo when you are logged in the grid
    - Click to "local"
    - Choose a pic in your computer and "apply"
    - and OK.

    Et voilà!
    ;)

Does this not equate to what used to be called temporary uploads? You may well see the profile picture but everyone else will just see a grey texture I think as they do not have access to the picture because it is stored locally on your computer and has not been uploaded.

  14. There are various types of payment info status....

No payment info on file - means no card/payment info for this account have ever been registered and no L$ have therefore been purchased by this account

Payment info on file - means a card/payment method has been registered for this account but it has not yet been used for any purchases (subscriptions or L$)

Payment info used - means a card/payment method has both been registered and used for this account (subscription or L$)

It is impossible for someone with the status of no payment info or file or payment info on file to have purchased L$ on that account and they will have obtained funds by other means (either from an alt or through employment within SL).

However, as many have stated payment info should only be used as a guide when interacting with others and never allow the fact someone has no payment info on file to convince you that they are up to no good as you may well be jumping to conclusions.

Well, but having all those abandoned and basically useless lands on mainlands as you said is still a cost for them, and nobody is going to get those lands. So they could even consider to start from there to sell some portion of Mainland regions giving to people buying a one-time price instead of a monthly fee.

They do sell off the mainland plots via auctions and anyone can even raise a ticket to purchase abandoned land.

Thing is I think people sprawled over the mainland and then Linden Homes version 1 came - it did not make much of a difference as they were poorly placed. When Linden Homes version 2 came people actually moved from the mainland to these places as the homes themselves did not count to the land impact and the places actually looked good. The old mainland places are sad to see empty yes but the fact that LL are rolling out loads and loads of new homes that are snapped up fast shows that peoples tastes and wants have changed on the whole.

  16. Everybody is having to cut back on thing thanks to rising prices. However I am sure LL are well aware of the economies as they have to pay for the hosting of those sims whether they are full of abandoned land or not. This is sadly a cycle of autumn and winter we will have to endure. Not all places will survive as people cut their losses.

I do not foresee any massive cutting of costs by LL for the simple fact that they (like any other business) have their own increasing costs to cover. I'm not sure of anything that has come down in price - unless its wages in the real term.
