For one thing, it was a required course for my programming degree(oddly, my design degree did not require this particular course, but that's neither here nor there), I didn't choose the course, lol. The second thing I need to point out is that this assignment's requirements were on its functionality NOT appearance, and we were instructed to place little to no emphasis on aesthetics(it was in fact meant to be relatively bland for good reason), but rather focus on specific functions within the pages. Considering my grade, once evaluated by an actual professor(who had to fix many grades for this course, and now teaches it full time) remained a solid straight A, I would say I did quite well, especially in the "paying attention" department, thanks for the concern though. Perhaps you don't understand some of the topics covered in web design courses, but I assure you they are often focused as much on functionality as they are design.

I do, very much, know that a website's look matters, I'm not a nitwit. But if a website does not function properly, looking pretty, nice, whatever, will not fix this, nor make it a worthwhile site to visit(much less use).

That's because design and function are supposed to flow together. That said, LL's choice back in the day was a very very stupid one. That's why we are where we are now with the marketplaces piss poor design and functionality.

Yes, we know... pointless changes for the 'fashionable look' and to hell with the function... Old news on many websites,

Some buffoon suggests a 'stylish modern makeover' to management, they approve the plan and next thing you know some over paid under talented php web monkey has reworked the forum or webstore or support pages, or online documentation into some 'hella kewl contemporary web-art' that is literally unreadable by anyone who doesn't have a 30 inch monitor & 20/20 vision, and is over 30...

This is why I've always said that SL is more for the older generation. And that's fine. But it's gonna die with your generation if it's not updated. That's a fact.

Most people are more concerned with functionality than they are the outward appearance(s).

It could look like it was written in mud by a duck with a stick coming from its beak for all I care, as long as it functions properly. How the site, or pages "look" doesn't remotely matter to me..functionality does. Perhaps for some "looks" matter more, but from this merchant and customer's standpoint...looks don't mean jack. There are far more important things to worry about.

I actually do agree that the mp needs an overhaul, as does the review system..but not in how it looks, rather how it functions both for customers as well as merchants.  You kinda sound like an instructor I had during one of my web design courses a couple of years ago. She was so concerned with how the pages actually looked, she completely ignored how they function(and graded based on that, which was piss poor I might add) If we didn't design our pages to look super fancy with all kinds of bells and whistles, but our sites functioned properly, we lost points on our assignments. Those whose sites functioned poorly but looked fabulous, got full credit. A bit assbackwards if you ask me.

(and on that note, those of us that did the assignments properly, ie, focused on functionality as those were the *requirements* did get our grades overturned by someone with a bit more brain matter, btw...and that instructor no longer teaches that course, lmao)

Your instructor was very wise. The design of a site is extremely important. Because first impressions visually matter A LOT. You obviously took a class so why do you not know this simple basic design fact? You really should have paid more attention.

But that's not to say I don't agree with you as functionality is also important. But as someone else said It's almost impossible to fix it without wreckiing the whole thing.

Might as well make it look nice and dated to ease the pain of use, ya know?

My only fear is that LL, desperate for cash to continue building its white elephant, sells Second Life to google or facebook.

Then you will see the collapse of Second Life.

They are sitting on a gold mine and letting it age to death. I wouldn't sell it but I sure as hell would give it and everything associated with it (secondlife.com and it's marketplace) one hell of an update.

The initial "installer" you download from the website can probably considered as a plain inital hardware check tool

... which, upon successful check, downloads and installs the main client

...... which downloads and installs additional updates, even though you were under the impression that it just downloaded the most recent client in the previous step.

By the way, just presenting the user with a plain loading screen with an average "... xx %" count, but no info on download speed, full file size and remaining data download seems pretty dull to me.

Judging from how long it took me on a 12mb Wi-Fi connection I'll say it was close to a gig.

Not sure you really were inworld in the old days, but compared to that there is HARDLY any unscheduled maintenance in the last 5 years. Nearly everything is scheduled.

Patching is just repairing bugs and serious issues... if that's your view on what happened with SL during 14 years i think you will not get a lot of long time players share your thoughts. There has changed really a lot.

Yes it has a old core, but it functions better than ever before.

Closing a few weeks for updating?... it will kill SL. if there's a 5 minute maintenance most start yelling already.

If you want a more perfect thing perhaps Sansar will fit your needs better?

Negative. When you require everyone to look at a status page to see to see if its offline, thats ANCIENT. And when I do actually stumble unto the status page, it always says "unscheduled maintenance". And I tend to check it when I can't log in...like we ALL do. Thats not really scheduled.

Closing down for a few weeks to perform updates and actual fixes is the result of the backend being neglected for so long. Why do you think they created Sansar? They COULD'NT bring VR to Second Life as originally intended without...you guessed it...actually updating and fixing the backend. This is honestly their own fault.

It was not around in 2004. There is a long marketplace history, starting with SL Exchange, a third-party marketplace.  It was bought by Linden Lab and re-named Xstreet. Xstreet was later migrated over to the marketplace, which at first used the same magic boxes as Xstreet though very different in many ways. Marketplace was integrated with SL as it currently is. Then a couple of years ago we got direct delivery,  a major development. There have been other incremental developments since inception.

    I am bad with dates.

You're probably right but what I want to know is why its web design look like its was made in 2004. Sansars marketplace looks nice and clean. You do realize the ONLY thing that got a major design facelift has been the forums, right? xD

Chrismaky, aside from them creating a new platform, a patch is the method of delivering updates. So I am not really sure what point it was that you were trying to argue. If anything, I'll be worried when the patches stop, or when cycles are far and few in between. We may not get our way, but this platform among others represents an opportunity to share our thoughts, and voice our concerns. I don't think that giving feedback is a waste of time, but that's just me.

That is my point. They are not updates. They are small "fixes". Thats where all that "unscheduled maintenance" crap comes from. What they need to do is to take the whole thing down for a few weeks (thats only due to them neglecting it since 2004) and do some serious updating to its backend so they don't have to "patch" it to make things like bento work. Their method is so stupidly old school its not even funny. They are sitting on a gold mind and letting it age to death.

You know what they did actually update? The forums. Thats it. Since 2004 the ONLY actual update they have done is the forums and that was THIS year. LOL.

But will they replicate the same fundamental error in Sansar, maintaining a distinction between web and in-world commerce? (I haven't checked and it's unlikely I'll ever own a single S$, but if I had any to wager, I know which way I'd bet. For all these years of Second Life, LL never even sketched out plans to unify web and in-world transactions.)

If I was an investor I would be so pissed, lol. I mean cmon, its 2017. Now I will give them credit, the sansar mp looks very nice and clean (thats probably about it though). We all know it will become a cesspool of useless crap like the sl marketplace. People be throwing up the same thing in 30 pages of different colors, lol.

  10. Second Life IS dying. Its an old platform with a neglected backend and gets nothing but patches. Linden Labs has abandoned it for Sansar. You could scream all the problems it has till youre blue in the face and nothing will get done about it. People generally don't give a crap, thats why you see alot of broken links and broken TPs, blah blah blah. Also, old school avatars and anything built on prims instead of mesh. Ive seen a lot of youtube reviews discussing this problem of SL being HEAVILY outdated (why do you think theres so many trolls? Because thats all some sims are good for. Not much else to do!)

  12. I am looking for a scripter and builder to make a custom lapdance chair. The following are spec qualifications:

    - Must be 100% high quality mesh with materials enabled.

    - Does not have to be full perm. Only COPY/MOD has to be allowed.

    - Cannot be resold. Must be exclusive.

    - Original design.

    - Script animations must be high quality (ie Dutchie lapdance chair animations). Originality is a plus.

    - Design must be modern/futuristic.

Price is completely negotiable. I usually pay top dollar if the final product meets my quality standards. DO NOT IM me if you do not work with quality mesh.  I want the best and I pay for it. This is for an in-world upcoming business. I look forward to hearing from you.

  13. This is NOT for gaming purposes as I do not wish to get involved in legalities. Basically, it will function like a sploder. But I am looking for a scripter to make me a script that allows people to place money amount bets on 1 of 2 avatars like how a tip jar works but with 2 avis logged in. The tipper would select one of the logged in avis via menu and place their bet. The script would also need to collect all tips and then disperse the winnings among the winning avis who tipped to the logged in winner after a set time. Money is negotiable. I just need the script, nothing else.

stange that you still take that junk car to come here... if it's really that bad i'd dump it without waiting any longer.

posting a techinical problem with  simply "it doesn't work" ... isnt going to solve anything , nor possible to get a tip how to get around it.

"Second Life is that old car you keep driving and refusing to replace because theres still nothing better on the road but when that day comes, you know youre gonna junk it."

Are you daft? I'm not asking for help. I'm not looking for the technical forum. I'm venting due to SL having multiple technical issues all over the place and getting damn sick of it. And no, it doesn't work! I know it doesn't work! Because I tried to buy something off the MP and their cashier is down. I know this because I called them! So no, I don't need tips to get around anything! Bloody hell man...
