VPNs are out of question, as are manual attempts to obtain a new IP address, because that's not what the average user does. Nobody obscures an alts IP unless they do something shady, which is not the point here.

    Expand

This is where the logic goes off the rails for me. Why are these snoopy people trying to discover alts in the first place? Just idle curiosity about "the average user" who really doesn't care whether somebody discovers their alts?

I think that, rather funnily in cases like probably OP's, rather than the "alt user", it's the snoopy people being "shady", if you will, by unleashing either their idle curiosity, or the kick that they get out of (rightly or wrongly) putting IP1 and IP2 together and checking that (in their insane minds ;)) more "scientific-fact-y" IP matching against their linguistic and similar observations for "proof", or wanting to protect their sim from potential alting trouble makers (those are the top 3 reasons in a role play sim scenario, I think, but there might be others) on what are supposed to be their role play sim community.

In any case, of course, who cares, really, but in my experience, there are more than enough insane people playing in and managing role play sims to warrant the question, and perhaps precautions, IF one is concerned about alt-guessing (by means of IP matching, email matching, collecting speech patterns, ...). Even if, as usually, they do, role play sims allow multiple avis, that doesn't mean there's nobody who doesn't want to know other people's alts, even if they, themselves, have plenty. Idle curiosity, or wanting to feel superior because they were able to guess someone's alt, while basking in the treacherous feeling that nobody guessed theirs, or to observe a potential alt of someone they kicked, matching IPs are brilliant fodder for them, no matter if 99% of people here would call them insane for regarding matching IPs as "proof".

Some role play sims are 🐍🕳️ s!

    😅

  2. I don't have a static IP, but it doesn't change with every logout/in, either, and in any case, if someone would geo-check a couple of IP adresses of my main and alt account, they'd know at least that "we" live in pretty close proximity. That's no proof, of course, but...

only idiots would rely on an IP match to identify alts with any kind of confidence

Well, yes. That's the point, though, perhaps, people trying to "catch alts" probably are exactly that, and don't care about confidence. Their mission isn't about confidently matching IPs to uncover alts with 100% accuracy, but drama, any % over 0 is probably good enough for them 😅

If you need or want to join a website or such that your role play sim has set up, by the way, consider registering not with your main email address, or any that you'd not want them to know.

(it's not paranoia if they are really out there to get you, was it, right? ;))

    Something akin to, "Excuse me"?

... hmmm? Apologize to Silent (and anyone else I didn't write clearly or correct enough for, to know what I meant vs. what I might unintenionally have said).

I think, "Excuse me" would be more for asking the example stairs and corridor cleaning person to let me pass if they didn't on their own? But that was not what I was trying to say.

All I wanted to, originally, was to agree with a poster who posted about rudeness towards people working a service job, several page ago, already, but seem to keep misexpressing myself; I'll just see myself out now, so people can focus on the current peeves😅. Thanks for helping!

  4. Semi-ban the word "banlines" on the forum - any time anyone uses the word, they have to pay 1L$ into the "banlines funds", which finances an in-world region with two zones.

One, a battlefield, where friends and foes of banlines may fight each other with those gatling guns from the first post.

One a party zone, where they can smoke peace pipes together.

And forum gets monthly statistics of how many avatars were counted per zone...

If they are in the corridor, they are not on the stairs cleaning them. If you read my post again, I do say I do acknowledge them with a smile and/or nod. What I do not do is go out of my way to do so because I am just as busy as they are and likely have less time since I still need to get to my destination and the cleaner is already on the job. That is not being rude. It's the typical behavior society has forced on us all.

In the houses I know, they clean both corridors and stairs, but I apologize in any case, I guess I should have expressed myself far clearer.

What you wrote is exactly what I got from your post; I just wanted to clarify that I do not find it rude at all if they get acknowledged in - some - way, and did not mean that it's needed to go out of one's way or thank them *for their work*.

Probably my English is too bad, or I'm too careless when writing on forums, and indeed should know better by now. Sorry, again, I did absolutely not interpret your post as if you pass them without any reaction at all.

Peeve: the Huskies got a possum this morning. I am currently sitting on a bucket over the possum, trying to figure out how to get the huskies to go away so I can move it to the front yard.

Update: Standard procedure: Put a shovel under the bucket, carry bucket outside using shovel for a lid, put possum in a neighbor's yard to recover and live for another day.

Peeve: Why possums stay in my backyard with Huskies there is beyond me..

Sounds like my standard wasp procedure, though that's a mini version, with a glass and postcard instead bucket and shovel :D.

Assorted peeve: Why can wasps and similar beings always find the way in, but never out, even if they obviously try to...

I will not approach them and interrupt their work just to thank them for doing their job.

That's not what I meant. I meant, they are cleaning the stairs, and have to stop their work to step aside and let you pass on your way up or down the stairs. Not "thanks (for doing your job)", but just a polite, and, for me, natural "thanks" (for letting me pass); doesn't necessarily have to be a "thanks" either, a "hello", "good day", or such, while passing, works, too. But passing them without saying a word, as I do sometimes see, yes, I'd classify that as rude, in that situation.

Maybe it would be easier for newbies who do not want that, to get help if there was some "pick up a newbie who does really (at least for now, and from a "helper oldbie") want just some general help and nothing romantic or more" spot. 😅

  9. I also don't meet, respectively get into contact with newbies often these days. If so, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and chat a bit, and if they have questions, answer or help with landmarks or links to fashion blogs, mesh body ecplainer website, tell them how to search groups and such, but only if they ask. I don't give L$ to people who ask for them (think that often aren't newbies, anyway, or might be kids who have no business being there), but sometimes L$ or gifts to people who don't ask, with "Welcome to SL" message.

You would not believe the level of rudeness that exists with people and how they think you are their personal servant.

Alas, I do. Trying my best to be especially nice to people who do "servant jobs" 🙄 even though I'm far from the most outgoing person irl. Seeing how, for example, people walk past the stairs cleaning person in the house corridor, with neither hello nor thanks, almost makes me pity the rude person, thinking they must have had awful or no parents. Almost. Usually, I'm just too baffled by that kind of behaviour to think so far.

Or in my situation, I get cranky that there is someone with a Midnight last name as their display name. 😡

I even get cranky with myself in form of my own one account with an old free surname, whenever I spott a buyable surname that I like more, but it seems like really too much waste to get rid of a surname other than "Resident". "Elf" was irresistible, but administered to a "Mrs. Resident" account, so could convince my inner accountant to cough up for that.

Surnames are a great occasion to crank over, in several ways, in any case, am always looking forward to the "New Surnames available" threads, names cost $ now, but the new names thread is always free entertainment,  provided by and for cranky oldbies and cranky newbies alike!

  12. That's hard, but fun, too, so let me another hyper objective criterion or two...

Anyone who was around before 3rd party viewers is an oldbie.

Anyone who just pretends to be cool with despicable newbies having, qu'el horreur, *bought* their last name, but, in truth,  is not, is ... ah, no, sorry, that doesn't work, ... is a cranky oldbie ... or a broke newbie. ;)

And... anyone, who feels the need to preamble each and every single one of their comments, stories, remarks, and statements with something to the effect "My first account was an oldbie", isn't. 😜

  13. It's a "better than nothing age verification".

Too many years ago, when I saw that there are things I'd like to spend L$ for, I found that I'd rather spend money earned in RL than spend my SL time fishing.

Back then, I could get L$ by simply buying a PaySafe card in like three or four shops around the corner, no credit card, ID, anything needed.

Very low barrier, and would've been easy peasy if I'd been underage, too.

At some point, PaySafe card didn't work anymore, which was a big issue for many SL users at least in my country, as credit cards weren't really widespread (more so, now, even more so since 2020, of course, and we all know that forces at work really hard to eliminate cash, and for different reasons than viruses, too). Debit card didn't work, either, just credit card and now, also PayPal, which needs to be verified, too, at least here, at least past some time/amount.

Had I been underage, my only option would have been asking for or stealing either of my parents' credit card (which they didn't have any, anyway, so, no way for me). Which might be no issue for some, but definitely is an issue for many. Without getting into the reasons, I definitely wouldn't have done either, and certainly others neither, even if some might, but that, again, "better than nothing age verification".

(long paragraph deleted, because people tending to not like their financial info, ID scans, etc., flying around too many companies, and potentially turning up in leaks, dark web,... isn't exactly the topic)

Do a deep dive on any of the MP listings mentioned on that infamous article, and even more stuff there. Yeah something needs to be done about users too not just Lab employees.

Well, yes, but it's just Lab employees who can/who'll have to do/be told to do/be employed to do something about those. But, yes!

I believe some countries even have laws that prohibit this stuff. To my surprise, it seems that a lot of people are very comfortable with this as long as the person behind the avi is an adult. Irrespective of our individual opinions on this topic, Linden Labs does have and has had a stance on this. They already had policies that covered this topic.

Just want to add that I also believe that some of exactly those countries don't have laws that prohibit marrying off real human beings that other countries consider children. It's a complex matter. But, yes, SL have their stance (and will have to review and potentially adjust it, alongside time, legislation, the public opinion, its own self-understanding, and such, evolving, whether for the better or the worse, being subjective).

I'm genuinely curious what people think explains the delay. Two theories I dreamt up are clearly silly for an issue of this magnitude: It's not just bureaucratic bulk nor a doomed hope that it would all blow over. Those didn't happen, it had to be a conscious decision to wait, and to be seen to be waiting. But waiting for what?

Maybe it took so long because they had to make absolutely sure to have the right person make the statement, respectively be the spokesperson for the statement.

Most importantly, we heard from Oberwager with a commitment to stay the course rather than what I'd feared: pulling the plug out of annoyance at having to deal with this when he surely has better things to do with his time. So that's good.

I was already typing a long comment, but actually, this about sums it up. It's good that they finally published a statement, as I'm sure that not just Qie was fearing exactly that, and might have even decided to pull the plug themselves, due to the long radio silence. And I'm not speaking of people maybe afraid of their own policy violations being uncovered in the wake of investigations, new rules, etc., but of those who just wouldn't want to be part of this any longer if specifically the allegations concerning staff, other staff looking the other way, and such, turned out to be true, not investigated, or without consequences if true.

    Oh hell no.

Proposing "elected representatives", like that won't be gamed to hell and back. People with 50 alts voting 50 times for their bestie, finding ways to ensure most people never even hear about the election, etc.

And for what, so some elf important Politician wannabe RP type can swagger around advocating policies the majority don't want. Remember, it's all too common for a "majority government to have been voted for by only 35-40 % of the voters, who are only a25% of the eligable voters, who are only 50% of the population.

"Elect your local Egowh*re" is the very LAST thing SL needs.

    That won't end well.

The "hell no" sentiment is my thought regarding that kind of system, too. (but rest assured that Politician is just about the last thing on Earth that I'd aspire to be. Funny typo!😂)

What I don't really get, is all the "new policies" etc. bit. Aren't they there already, but just need to be really "policed", and, possibly, more peoplepower?

In Second Life, "Friends Don't Let Friends ________start an inventory spring cleaning".

Cause they'll be busy for the rest of their SLyear, and lose out on time that could have been spent together (like, on hunts and shopping tours, acquiring more inventory! ;)).

Now, if friends could invite friends into each others inventory, to do those cleanings together, and could laugh about forgotten stuffs together, and swap inventory items they don't want anymore, that'd be some quality friend time right there, though! ;)

  19. I'm a person who always did their best to not walk through tourist's photos, both for the sake of their photos and because I don't want to be in random people's photos, as far as I can avoid it. Now, it's basically impossible to not "be featured" in people's public facetime phone calls, no matter where you go, in the street, on the bus, in a coffeeshop, even in the doctor's waiting room (despite the phone striked through sign), on a forest walk,...

I don't like. It's not that I'm doing anything against the law that might accidentally be caught on video in a café, or something, but... how to explain it, even in public spaces like cafés, it doesn't feel right that some people kind of extend their personal space over mine, by video call, while mine gets infiltrated.

If I'd really need to take a call while in a café, which can't wait until once I'm out, at the least I'd keep it to voice. I never take calls in café, though, and also keep video calls to within my own four walls if I can't avoid them. I guess I'm just weird and a fossil. /me hopes for a few hearts that might indicate I'm not the only one, though. 🫣😅

But, yes, it's definitely a pet peeve of mine, by now, as increasingly ubiquitous.

  20. I wouldn't, I don't have a problem playing a necromancer in SL, but I'd feel too bad SLsurrecting someone who's already managed to pass on into the afterlife or lack thereof, with no way to ask them if they'd like me to, beforehand. I'm too polite or something, idk.

I'd probably prefer SLerecting fictional people. Would be super hard to decide, if just one, though, I'll need a decade or so to think it over, I'll necro the thread in case I'll haven't passed on myself by then 😅

My dream is to own an Edwardian-era children's fashion boutique.

I think it would see little traffic as anything other than an oddity, because most people in SL wouldn't want to dress up as children from an Edward Gorey artbook. At least these days.

    gashlycrumb1.jpg?w=680&ssl=1

Perhaps if you owned it on a lemonysnickety roleplay sim, it might (have) draw(n) some interest(, when it was out as a movie, and later as Netflix series, maybe still some would like to try it), I fear not nearly as many as HP, though. On the other hand, maybe some people are looking for an alternative to the latter in the mean time.

I love that style, a fantasy sim rp kid of mine dressed like that, sim sadly doesn't exist any longer. I also dress a whiff of it irl, when possible (possibility highest in winter, lowest in summer 😅), but just very subtly, brave enough, but introvert, and wouldn't like people talk to me because of it, even if to compliment it and not to make fun of me.

    ___

I love this thread! (off to check if I already liked it, probably yes, but love it so much I want to be sure)

... a little later... well, I had used the laugh, not heart emoji, but that checks out!
