  1. It's an interesting question. Personally, I'd say it has a few advantages, and it's also nice to get or give a "Happy SL Birthday".

However, I think it's quite possible that such things, along others, might "get PCd" at some point, with "age harassment" reasoning.

Some time ago, I noticed that one of my "fun accounts" didn't show creation date or anything the like, forgot which one (don't we have so many...), Steam? Discord?, no, don't remember, but I remember that I was surprised, as you often can see, and I liked that you could not, and it wasn't a platform where I ever noticed any "disadvantages" due to account age being shown, just a general, "oh, nice that you can't see this" feel.

On pondering this, it's probably to do with the fact that it's kind of personal info, like gender, country of residence, etc., which I generally also don't want shown on "for fun" accounts by default. There are platforms, where you can show or hide your (rl) birthdate and gender, I think, no real reason that you shouldn't be able to in SL.

Then again, if by choice option, there'll be "if they don't show it, they have an evil reason, surely thry are a newb/pretend to be a newb but aren't/are on SL since two decades and a century old im.RL/..." people.

You can't win the game, be it the SL or RL game.

If I could choose between "hiding" only one of my account age or payment info, payment info, it would be.

  2. (Wow, those mail boxes are a sight to behold. In my RL home, the postperson just rings all bells, and, if lucky, someone's home and in the mood to answer the bell, lets them in, so they can access the mail boxes im the hall, or else, you'll find your important letter with action deadline stuffed below the door, half ripped, and wet, depending on the weather...)

My neighbour to the left has a walrus postbox, my neighbour to the right a hippo postbox, and I have a moomin postbox. I regularly need to ask my neighbours if they got any of my letters, because the postperson says they all look the same to them, and it's impossible to not throw mail to Mrs. Moominfan.Resident in the walrus or 🦛 box occasionally! Do you even know what I paid for my custom moomin mailbox including franchise fee?!

  3. As they take user suggestions, why not also put suggestions (minus ones that they sorted out as unusable) up for users to vote on a few days before each turnover. Ideally, that could be double the number of "free name slots", half names they think would be popular, half names they think would not be popular (but might be), maybe even a commentary option for people who'd want to advise against names like "Simp".

It might be a fun regular in-world event for user engagement, a place you maybe even could count on probably meeting forum readers and others around those, say, three days, once it would be known to exist, who'd be in chat mood over the names, could bond over their favourite or most disliked name, would be reminded to hand in a name themselves occasionally,... and might get to enjoy the heartwarming fuzzy feels when they'd see residents with "their" suggested or voted on name, wouldn't that feel like being a godparent to that resident? And maybe even more communication ensuing.

What I really also would love to see, would be stats like how many names are being sent in, how many of the new batches are user suggestions and how many lab choices, how many names of how many get "rejected" per rejection reason (fine to not spell out those names, of course), per "shuffle/season", or at least per year. :)

The feeling whe you see second life youtubers who still turn around very slowly with the movement keys

Hey, I paid for my turn left and turn right animations, I'm getting the most out them I can! ;)

Linked to that, my "not so secret but secret to some" tip is, customise your animations. Personally, my preference is the integrated "AO tool" of the Firestorm viewer.

Buy a complete animation overrider that you really like and that contains many animations, rez and open it to get a folder with the single animations in your inventory. Use Firestorms integrated AO and have fun, creating your separate custom AOs, for laggy events, for shopping, for dates, for evenings at your dancing plays, for exploration trips, for different roleplay personas, ...

You can also modify AOs for use in the SL viewer, using different notecards, but I'm finding the integrated Firestorm one less clunky, easier, and faster to use.

Exact instructions and tips on where to get good animations, including specifics like "not as much movement like a whole kindergarten group in one person for my 50+ avatar, for heaven's sake!", can be found by searching the avatar forum section.

    ___

I was surprised to find the Notes tab under the "hidden features", I've been using them since forever, and extensively, but probably many will say that about "custom" AOs, too.

    And about anything else. 😅

  5. Can't move to Belli, don't have no PhD in BelliBinology?!!111?!

Had to relocate a belisserillion times before finally getting a location I liked.

It's okay, I guess. Could be okayer, could be less okay. Meh. Everything was better in the last millennium!

Super awesome, but have to take off one star because they should deliver a surname choice "Bellissarian" with each Belli home.

I'm so in love with my BelliBins. It took me a while to figure out what goes where when, but once you master the system, it's so beautiful! My only tiny complaint is that I'd also need a BelliBelloBin, as I'm planning on getting a Lifelikeable doggie, but a friend told me there are self-decomposing bags that you can throw in the regular bins then, so I'm still giving five stars. I'll revisit this review to modify the rating if there's anything I don't like, as I'm only living here since a day so far, and have spent it on the BelliBins instructions, so I can't really say anything about Belli itself, but I'm sure it's great. I mean, people wouldn't call Bellisseria Belli if it wasn't great, amirite.

  6. Well, supposedly, you can hand in names, there was even a contest where you could win a year of premium or something when it started, if my memory serves right.

I've handed in a few names, but never saw one of them, so, supposedly, they have no shortage of those. Not sure about seasonal names, though, maybe partly from the ones handed in, partly from office polls if people didn't suggest enough seasonal ones.

  7. I can absolutely see Lovelace working past the Valentine season, not just for steampunk fans...err... simps ;)

And yes, I'm sure there are people who'll consider Simp, words and meanings and their reception do change indeed, and if people call themselves "old fart", why not "simp", you know. I also think that indeed "simp" like "otaku" does ring different already in some sub cultures, and what is SL if not full of sub cultures. Maybe even a Linden wanted a Something Simp avi, and that's why it's there, who knows.

I imagine there already is or will be a Luna Lovingood, and a Nota Flirt.

Yeah, still, I think Lovelace is the only one I'd seriously consider, or Bae maybe, too, depending. But don't need a new name currently, and at the current price tag, it needs to be one I really, really want. :)

I don't think it's " love " to remain level headed when everyone else is being unreasonable :p.

In my day job, I call it "kill'em with kindness", love might cause additional issues :). Usually, a good tactic. And means that I feel there might still be some kind of hope for them to become reasonably level headed. Until I feel there isn't, then it's neither love nor kindness, but exquisite politeness. 😄

Anyway. SL and love... SL might have taught me that I can develop some kind of love towards people I never met and most probably will never meet, while not even feeling sad about it.

  9. ID key files that are tied to your device, so that you have to get a new one that consist of an email plus a code sent via 🐌 📬 "within 14 days", while you need to raise an objection against something that was their error - as confirmed by them on phone call, but, still, you need to raise that objection, with a deadline, through a platform that you can't access, because you almost never need it, and thus never before were confronted with the sad discovery that your conscientiously done triple backups of said activation file are worthless, as tied to your recently deceased device. Grrr.

So basically, at best, those sh*te-tech figures represent the potential noobs visiting the website, and have sod all to do with the actual demographics of SL.

I was already wondering how to interpret the bounce rate, maybe not disconnects due to insufficient hardware, then, but delicate souls clicking the forum link and fleeing ;)

Were the bleep did these similarweb people get the data about gender and age distribution? (Possible answer: inferred from all of your spied upon browsing behaviors.)

I fear so, too. Or not, actually, would be worse if they'd be able to get it from our internet providers. I wonder how many % of people they get wrong, like most probably me, as my browsing behaviour, due to work, must be very confusing, as I can clearly see from what ads and such I get served by the data spy connection. (ETA: correct data or not, I'd have liked a more detailed breakdown for 65+!))

Good to know that I'd not have lost money in a bet that UK and Germany would be in the top for Europe, though, seems realistic.

I was never at IMVU.  Found SL and never looked for anything else.

I found SL first, and did look at a few "similar" things then, out of interest of what else is there, but nothing could hold SL's virtual proverbial beer.

I was, however, never at IMVU specifically, because, while I like forming my own opinion, it seemed abundantly clear I'd not like it from what I read.

That alone probably would have been enough, actually. In SL, I could even fly, so, going somewhere I can't walk, deal breaker.

  13. A funny little cardboard robot creature that looks like a child drew it. I don't even remember if it was in my inventory from the get go, or a gift or I actually bought it at some point. So, it's nothing as sophisticated as a TWI or anything the like, but it has a special sort of charme, reminding me of the pre-mesh age, and I feel like the creator would probably be a really nice person, and sometimes, I don it and awkwardly clump about in it, just for the fun of it.

  14. Yes, sure, in the current state, you can. I have to compete with AI in my rl line of work, I know well enough. But that kind of development is exponential, and depending on how far things will go regarding "cross referencing", who knows. Maybe not in SL, or so I hope, but the potential is somewhat scary, not just in regards to the grandchildren scam sphere.

    05:50]  Avatar Scanner  V0.8.0:
In order to create a classy and realistic environment for all, we have defined min and max body sizes for the extended  Club area at 3000m and the skyboxes.
Your body is too short according to the club rules (min. height 1.670): 1.655.
If you love our place, please consider to create a shape compatible to our club rules. If you remain as you are now, we will TP you home within 3 minutes.

I used to set my avatar height to my rl height, but had to adapt to like 2m in my early days, because it would have been annoying to dance with giants, or have door handles on same height with my eyes, and such... In later years, furniture, buildings, other people's avatars on average, became much more rl scale, and I now keep my avatar's height at around 1,70, which still is a bit taller than my rl height, but tall enough to not have encountered any height booting so far, it's not worth fussing about a few centimetres taller or not to me.

If I got booted for lacking height, knowing my avi is 1,70, I'd not bother adjusting to go back, though, I'd find that rule stickling too ridiculous. While I absolutely understand that sim or parcel owners do their best to assure no kid avis where none should be, I've seen so many avis that reek of child play and wouldn't have any issues to pass the height check.

Of course, one could also argue endlessly over the actual height limit, and someone from Norway might think, 1,80m is reasonable enough for average avatar height, while someome from somewhere else might rightly say, their countries' average female height is 1,45m, ...

They need to have to set the limit somewhere, if they have one, be it height, scipts, full-bright, or else.

Generally, if I really want to be somewhere, or may want to be at a place long-term, I'll check the rules, and if they are reasonable enough to me, I would adapt. If not, not (edit for clarification: and leave, and strike it off my personal map). I respect it if people are required to "fit into a setting".

When I want to insist on "coming as I am", I stick to exploring places that don't mind.

How far I'd go, it's hard to measure (no pun intended), mostly would depend on how dearly I'd want to be there, I guess? In your club example, I'd have found it too fussy to argue about cranking my avi height up a notch, and just done it, if I really was interested in that club. The full bright hair, on the other hand, if I saw such a feature as such as a defining trait of my virtual self, and always wore it, that I'd feel bad changing it, I'd probably find it a bit silly of the place, but would respect their own best judgement in deeming it as too much of an eyesore to owner or their usual visitor group, and kindly take my leave.

  16. I mainly roleplay, and I like NPC bots, it at least feels less lonely like that, hanging out in some medieval tavern, waiting for actual players to pass by. I might even say hi to them.

When I am where many people are, like events, music venues, popular scenic sims, and such, I never had the impression it's bots.

I've certainly read about and also noticed "bot pollution" when looking at the map too often to know how often, but never tried to purposely tp to spots with lots of green dots stacked one on the other, but I'm sure it must feel annoying or futile if you do that to find actual people and up with lots of mute bots instead over and over.

What I wonder is what would happen, if all those bots got AI-ed up. Would people notice? Would they prefer them to non-interactive bots, or the contrary? Would they even notice? I'd hope that we'd at least get a clear tell, so we could decide if we'd like to chat away our time with an imaginary friend in form of a bot, or not. Personally, I prefer interacting with real people, even if it's someone just asking for Lindens, or where I bought something, or even someone I don't really like all too much, it's just more fun, more alive. But there's loads of otome games, guys with virtual girlfriends, even one famously "married" to some virtual idol,... So, the demand may be there, I don't know.

I basically only fly when I fall from my building platform (again).

Mine, too. This "separation" only came to mind, as just yesterday, I was telling myself, "why aren't you actually running to that shop over there, it's not as if it will increase your blood pressure or anything, silly :p"

I love flying, though, but do that "in character" as someone or something with wings, and I love running around in a cat avatar, but usually go shopping in my "everyday real life" kinda avi/outfit, I treat it as an actual shopping outing, so, no running for me. And props to shops that have a nice little coffee corner... ;)

At least they didn't say "loosing out on money"..

Or l00sing... I was wondering if the OO in the brand name was a double upper-case O to obfuscate the brand name, or a double zero to imply their take on the brand's quality (which I find great, I have both free and paid for L. heads), but typing out both OO and 00 here, it definitely seems to be two upper-case "O"s... :)

  19. A not unimportant point, I think, is also that people who start with (a free) L head, will be hesitant to buy another brand, once they are ready to splurge. "Learning" a new HUD and stuff is daunting. If you your family's go-to tech person, you'll know what I mean. The same or at least most similar UI gets more precious, the older the users get. The more people you get to start with your brand (even for free), the more future (paying) customers you'll have.

  20. I'd also say it heavily depends, your world, your imagination, your financial commitment. From begging other people for a few L$ to people paying for multiple sims just for fun, there seems to be a big spread. Would be fun if the beggar in the shop was a real $ billionaire, roleplaying a beggar, though!

It would be interesting to see stats of income levels of SL users, but then again, many wouldn't like to tell, or might lie, so, it's fine.
