Don't be! Like Alwin says, you'll have a fresh copy if you really completely mess it up, and if it encourages you, I'm so super untalented with such things that I'd almost guarantee that if I can do it, and even I can, as I found out, anyone can and you'll learn things by trial and error. :)

  2. Letting us pick the complete name spells too much trouble, I imagine. The usually not so realistic available names reduce the possibility of people registering other really existing people's name, including celebrities' or "celebrities'", or TM characters names, or more possibilities of "inappropriate" names, too, and there are more and more of those, naturally, as time passes, then they'd need to maintain more checking, and do "verified names", and such...

Also, the fixed surnames are "an SL thing", tradition, plus it would take away the element of the hunt, the disappointment at a crop of personally unusable names, the thrill of discovering one that might be right, the apprentice of whether it's still available in combination with your wishful first name, all that... 🫧

It's just a bit of fun for me, I'm fine with the fixed last name system, now that at least everyone has a chance at a go at it, paid for, and many people surely having other priorities for their $, as it is, but that's with other things, too.

  3. Winter ❄️ peeve: When the rubbish bins freeze and you can't open them, and or you find a note from your kind rubbish bin people that tells you that unfortunately they couldn't empty the bins in your area due to lids frozen stuck and bid you farewell until in a fortnight. The latter happened only once in my life, but it's really inconvenient 😅

    PS

Funnily, I don't like dark 🍫...unless it's really dark chocolate, i.e. 100%, which I love. It was hard to get, but now, there are a few local shops who have some, so I don't need to order, and also one with a café, where you can choose your hot chocolate with 60-100% cocoa, and the 100% tastes awesome. Hot chocolate, from pure cocoa and without sugar but with chili and cinnamon, definitely is one of my winter highlights... But I got OT, sorry, this should be in delights, not peeves :)

The entire inventory was wiped, idk if they still do that, what annoys me more is all of that stuff is still in the asset server. Would be nice if there was a way to get it back, I tried at the time, but they wouldn't do it. Would be nice if you could view all things you had ever owned and send things back to your inventory, but I know that's not realistic.

That's hard. I had deleted my account years ago, as I spent too much time on SL and didn't want to at that point. I knew that there's the possibility of losing your inventory (thought that's only "stuff", though, not notecards) if you delete an account, but when I ended up recovering the account eventually, it was completely intact. It wasn't a premium account even, but maybe it's more dependent on the time that passed, I don't remember how long the account was dormant.

Suspended however, they take no prisoners. My main was suspended for a year back in 2009 as I couldn't afford a tier payment due to RL money issues, and figured that I could only pay it when I finally had the money, so I would leave the account for a while. I finally got sorted and paid a year later and my inventory was wiped. I did ask them in a ticket about it and they stated that, at that time, they yeeted your inventory if you were suspended beyond X time. Which is annoying as I lost a hell load of stuff from pre 2009, some stuff I wish I still had.

Sorry to read that. Contacts and logs were still there? And what about notecards? Not sure if those count as inventory.

  6. Just saying, but even though, as a market place user, I detest keyword spamming, I didn't check the merchant's listings, nor did I report anything, and while there may have been one or more forumites who did, once the platform got a report by a disgruntled marketplace user (or even did a random check itself, by the way) about one or more listings with keyword spamming, the probability that the same merchant has more of them simply is super high, so, they might look deeper, and not necessarily all on the same day.

Yes but if you're doing other things with your main account and using an alt for camping, it makes sense. It made sense for a lot of people, anyway :)

Wouldn't it use up more electricity, though, if you're logged in with two viewers or viewer instances? Just as it also would be to be logged in with one avatar, even if your computer is on for other things anyway? Not wanting to be nitpicking, just curious; any educated guesstimate on how much an hour of SL costs electricity-wise if your computer is on anyway? On average, I suppose it would matter what specs the thing has.

Awwww. TIL, "pet envy" is a thing 😅 I can't have one at this time for different reasons, but someday I will again (or so I hope)!

RL pet delight of the day: When a Starbucks barista asks for your name but then actually remembers it from last time, before you answer. Idc if because I made an impression, or if they just happen to have a phenomenal memory (I tried to memorize the name on their name tag then, and failed :( but I'm at least double their age if not more, so that's my consolation), it still was delightful.

Maybe this is common practice, but why does Marketplace hide under a meta tag the keywords supplied by merchants? Shouldn't customers get to see the SEO scammers without having to show page source?

I'm pretty annoyed by that on RL market places, too. On Amazon, for example, if you want to buy a "cotton" something, while it's officially not allowed to use misleading keywords, you might get to see lots of anything-but-cotton somethings, even whole pages of them, before an actual cotton something. Now, in some cases, that's due to them stealthily incorporating "cotton" in form of "not made of cotton but of 100% polyester for longevity and easy care" in the visible parts of the listing (so that you can't even flag them as misleading), but often it's not, and the customer can't see the "backend keywords".

If you could easily see them, it might make some people decide against supporting keyword spamming practices, and buy from those who don't, and it might make brands/sellers rethink enough to make a dent and give people an easier time actually getting hits for what they are searching for.

Peeve: Teleporting to my work platform, and finding 2 people going at it like rabbits on my work-in-progress furniture! Time to put a security orb there I think.

Oh, isn't it a lot of trouble to find your work platform for that... They must be very afraid of virtual motel sheets. Or they are bored of being early adopters and want to be hyper early adopters of your furniture. In any case, it's a security orb use case that I understand too well.

Beggars asking for L$ without even a preliminary "Hello" of sorts. (An RL peeve, too.)

If that's my only interpersonal interaction with a fellow human being for the day, I want a "Hi", at least, before being asked to turn over my hard-earned money, just so.

Considering they already used most of the "mommy and daddy" names for Mothers/Fathers days in previous years, next year they will REALLY have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for options. Prepare your complaints about how bad they will be now to avoid the rush later.

Mhhh, I think there's a disclaimer somewhere, that they might reuse seasonal names, though, they did think this through, it seems, it's money, after all. So, none of us new money noblesse with a seasonal name can rest in the peaceful knowledge of having managed to snag a really nice last name that'll be retired soon-ish and becoming one of precious few. We could check the birth year, though, and refer to ourselves as "Elfs (or Daddys, or Hollypaws, or whatever) of the First Generation", or "Vintage Elfs (etc.), and still be sneery towards both the Resident Commoners, and the following generations of seasonal nobles, what a deal! ;)

16 hours ago, Persephone Emerald said:

I stopped sneering at the Resident last name within the first year. People can't help it if they joined SL more recently.

Yes, I've always understood that wanting a pretty name in a virtual world is a thing, but never understood the concept of sneering at the poor fellows who already can't claim they haven't been there since the inception or at least the prim age ;).

When I read about that there's actually a market of people selling/buying "legacy names" (forbidden as it is, so, with the risk of losing a paid account, or even potentially being banned for good) that's beeen a real eye opener as to how much people really wanted a pretty name (whether or not because of experienced sneering), and I wondered for years, why SL doesn't bring them back, either for free, or even as an additional money source.

The only thing I could imagine holding them back, was the sneery type of oldbies going into a huff, as they'd see it as kind of a downgrade of themselves, like when a real world country decides to downgrade nobles' names, and the "of" to be taken away from their names, so that "Jane of Doe" will have to suffer her further existence as "Jane Doe".

Fun fact, while running around in-world, minding my own business, someone IMed me out of the blue, wanting to buy my name... and that was many months into names being buyable; no idea if they were a very ill-informed newbie, or a (relative) oldbie living under a rock and not in the know, or someone with no trust in their own creative skills, or someone hoping for a good deal (but heck, you can't just buy a name without the attached account, so why would someone give you a deal for less than they paid, plus hand over all the goodies like mesh head, body, ao, and so on that they sunk more money into...).

    I know I should've stayed and found out, but I'm a scaredycat, so I fled. 🙀.

It's quite an interesting topic, actually, sneering, and all, and imagine how much money governments could make by allowing people to change their names, apart from through marriage, and without needing to jump through hoops of proving that having their predecessor's name is psychologically unbearable to them. It would be an organisational nightmare as of now, but maybe in future, we'll have user-IDs stamped into ourselves somehow, so they won't mind if we want to go under Johnny Mnemonic instead of John Doe.

I personally never refer to anyone by their log in name if they have a display name set.

Ya, me too, that's basic politeness to me if they put a display name. I personally, though, was sick of all the scripts in greeters, doors, etc., referring to me as "Jane53279.Resident" (not literally, but you get my drift), having to log in as "Jane53279 Resident", and seeing it in lists all the time, when other people had pretty, or funny, or relevant (useable as rp names) names, just because they happened to be a bit older or had discovered SL sooner.

The sneery type of oldbies definitely exist, but they'll keep being sneery anyway; they'll look at your SL birth year, or will make sure to learn the "new old names" by heart, to be able to immediately, without having to check your birth year, feel awesomely superior to you. I JUMPED at the pretty name option, not because of sneery oldbies, but as a treat for myself, because "Resident" ain't a pretty name, at least not to me, and, sure, I think it's overly expensive, considering that people who happened to join before whenever got them completely for free, but I consider it a contribution to SL's existence, same as I pay for clothes, or rent, or premium, etc.

ETA: not even sure why we need to discuss this in a thread with this title, but whatever 😄

As far as I can tell, only the holiday names get changed. The non-holiday ones seem to be permanent.

While some seem to stay around for ages, the non-holiday ones definitely aren't permanent, I can say as much. But whether they replace them after a certain number of users chose them (like someone above mentioned, I'm pretty sure I've read that this was at least the plan), or after a certain time, or combination of that, or even purposely keep the more popular ones around for longer than they should, for more sales, I can't tell.

I check for new names every once in a while, usually before a season, and while I don't do bookkeeping, there are non-seasonal names that disappear. Sharing the sentiment that the rotation takes too long, though, even though I check quite rarely, as some names really seem to hang around for a small forever, so that would have to be either names that few people pick, so the limit number isn't reached yet, or they keep popular ones around even they should retire them, but the latter doesn't make too much sense, they should be able to replace them with other certainly popular ones.

I'd love to know that mystery limit number, and whether they eventually retire unpopular names that don't reach that number, after a certain time, or just keep them up until they do.

  14. Sometimes, I do a bit of ruthless cleaning, and delete complete folders with things that belonged to a roleplay character from a long-gone sim, or folders like, "new stuff 2017", but at the slightest hunch of maybe-remorse, I'm usually too lazy, or cherish my time too much to do that, to go through to sort, and push it all into my "archive" folder. One day, I'll drink a mulled wine too many, and delete that one, and start a new one ;)

But, really, maybe just push it all into a folder that won't stare in your face too much, you could also name it "zzz" instead of "archive", so it won't stare, unless you scroll :D

I have a plot next to a big store these days. This morning it started to snow a little bit on that store parcel.
My thoughts was, nah that can't be, it is too early.
Now look at me on my parcel this afternoon. Spending all the time trying to keep a path around the house.

    Lovely.

I moved in RL recently, this will be my first winter in about seventeen years without "snow duty". Not sure yet if I'll be relieved or if I'll miss it... probably both :)

It comes even downer to whether a customer can persuade a creator to make something.

It comes downest to where a creator's priority lies: somewhere between earing money on the one hand, and the freedom to create whatever they feel like on the other.

Very true. As a real-life self-employed person, when confronted with money or more time to not work or to work on something I really enjoy or like or care about in some way, I'll often pick time. Money isn't everything, some people seem to forget that.

Regarding uniqication, my tip is, use add-on wrinkles, higher chance of being unique in SL than with freckles and moles ;) or just go for unique in non-visual aspects, that's stressless, as pretty much built-in anyway, and even free.

Myself, I tend to stick to one body and head until they become kind of obsolete, or I see something that really wows me enough, but I also understand that others like to play around with many or all that's available. I imagine this to be like when you'd sit people in a giant room with Lego of all colours. Some will sit in the middle of the room and build things using all colours, while some, like me, will gather loads of grey, brown and green stones and build intricate but mostly monochromatic castles, forests, or maybe a blue sea with the occasional few grey bricks to symbolize waves. And we all will have fun and be happy with our builds 😂 (Nah, in fact, everyone will quarrel about which kind of build is better, prettier, healthier, complain about the base ground plates not being available in a light middle reddish shade of magenta, and so on ;))

  18. Because it's so easy and cheap to have a different home whenever I fancy a change of scenery, even continent, with zero weight furniture conveniently stored in my inventory 😅

Jokes apart, or was it, I think it boils down to having wanted to be more part of it all. I'm not a creator, and I don't always have much time to contribute, but I usually could afford a bit of money, and loved "owning" a little bit of land, and whenever it was mainland for me, make something nice of it and keep it open for other people to enjoy - no idea if ever anyone did, though, ha, but I did my best to make it clear it's meant like that. I'm pondering mainland again, and this time, I'll look at MP and into setting something up like a visitor counter or something, to see if actually ever anyone passes, or even spends some time there, if possible, I'm curious. I like having a skybox for the odd things like unpacking, dressing, AFKing, and such, but for my "main property", I've always liked it to be a (semi-)public space, like a garden, library, café.

  19. 🤔 Maybe they just liked the name of the sim, I certainly do, and had plans for that plot, but then had a change of plans, too, and nothing better to do with their land allotment, for now, and will drop the price, or abandon the land sooner or later. Or they wanted to give other sim owners and land forum readers something to speculate over as a gift for the sometimes drab pre-Advent season. Maybe the grand plan is to make a kind of reverse advent calendar out of the plot, when you visit on December 1st, the price will be set to L$24, and LS1 less every day until December 24, and if still nobody buys, it'll be a Christmas gift on Christmas Day for L$0. Who knows. Isn't it kind of people to not always do what we expect, though.

Since that, I've turned it off, seemed a neglectable waste of time compared to potential dramatic botherances.
