  1. I guess I get overwhelmed when I go to a store like Catwa and try on a head and it doesn't look like the picture because it's not using the applier from the pic and then I get overwhelmed wondering what all the possibilities are what that head could look like depending on the skin applied and then I just second guess everything

I have one of the very first (not Bento) heads from Lelutka.  I am happy with my look and don't see any reason to change. I have some Bento heads (free but nice ones) but have never used them. So I suggest you pay attention to what PLEASES YOU and not listen to folks that likely buy things "just" because they are new. My favorite and still much better looking that much of what is on the market today formal is from the VERY EARLY days of mesh -- so like six years or so ago.  Honestly I haven't seen anything that looks better or is more nicely made.

    Just some thoughts.

You know, I had the same head from LOGO for a long time. When I upgraded to Quinn, it looked closest to the previous head I owned. I wonder if we get attached to our avatars and things just don't feel right if we go too crazy different. I feel like that's part of what holds me back from changing. Thank you for this perspective, I appreciate it!

If you want to do some more customization, the very first step should be playing with your shape. Your shape determines everything, your perceived weight, your figure including your breast size, butt shape, length, etc. But it also determines what your face looks like. You can adjust pretty much anything, head shape, jaw shape, chin, nose, eyes, cheekbones, eyebrows, anything.

So, play around with that before you fork over thousands of L$ for a new head.

As for your head being "soooooo old", eff them. If you are happy with your head, then THAT is the yardstick, whether your head is 7 days old or 7 years.

Thank you so much for this! I will play around with the shape a bit today. I know I saw some article about proportions in SL, maybe I'll try to find that again. One thing about proportions - I usually prefer to keep my avatar short as I'm only 4'11 irl and I enjoy being smaller in both worlds. It's never caused me an issue I think because my head is obviously very adult but I do wonder sometimes if people are judging how short I am 😀

  3. Current Body: Maitreya
    Current Head: LOGO Bento Quinn

I've played off and on for many years, however I've always kept my avatar simple. I had a mesh head from LOGO, so when Bento stuff came out, I just bought something I was familiar with LOGO - their Quinn Bento head. And it was a fine upgrade. I didn't do anything to it aside from make sure the skin matched my body and was blended at the neck. I only used whatever customization settings came with the LOGO or Maitreya hud. I've never tried to use Omega stuff or makeup appliers.

That said, I think I'm ready to tiptoe into further customizing my avatar. Can anyone recommend some sources of tutorials or information to get started? I was look at Catwa bento heads. Are those a good idea or should I look elsewhere? I don't have a problem with the Maitreya body, but should I be considering other options? Should I just keep my current head and focus on learning how to use omega for appliers to further customize?

I asked the LOGO group where my current head was being sold in the store and someone told me it was " soooooooo old." Should I upgrade in that case?

    I'm so overwhelmed!

  4. Alas, I'm still waiting for my forever home. Anyone want a roommate while I attempt my daily tries and fails? I was thinking of getting a cheap skybox or some rental for a week while I keep attempting. I miss just even having one tiny place to call my own. I love decorating and am very LI conscious. So if you are in the midst of decorating and just have an empty room sitting around that you haven't gotten to or some empty space outside, I'd love to spend some time with you ❤️

  5. Do you take money for services or is this purely RP? I have a problem with people claiming to be RL doctors and therapists giving out treatment online for any monetary gain. I still think it is poor choice to advertise you are willing to give counseling. Serious damage can be done by offering such a service to the most vulnerable.

When people suggest that gamers would only be interested in Second Life if it had points to score and bosses to beat I have to say that they're making a lot of ill-informed assumptions on what's driving people away from SL in the first place. Fact of the matter is, there are a lot of gamers already in Second Life and gamers have been interested in virtual worlds like Second Life longer than anyone. Gamers are people, they have a variety of interests just like anyone else. SL falls short of the mark for many not because there's no aliens to shoot or quest givers telling them to find 18 boar tusks, but because it has real problems that have been pointed out, discussed, and shown where they can be improved time and time again, but in 15 years those improvements never came.

Gamer here. This is exactly how I feel.

Second Life users try so hard to distinguish themselves from the gaming industry that in my opinion it hurts them. If they embraced that community and technology, they could follow along with the progress the gaming industry is setting and moving forward. I’ve played online games for over a decade, and so I’m not a stranger to online worlds. SL is an online world. However, the rest of the online games are looking at each other, competing with each other, pushing the boundaries of technology, finding new and innovative ways to implement ways to socialize and connect. While Second Life just sits in the corner with its arms crossed and says “No! I’m not like the rest of you and I won’t hang out and learn and progress with you!! I’m too cool for you!!”

It’s a real /smh sort of moment for me, watching Second Life be so stubborn. And to what end? So people can roll their eyes at the “elitist” gamers and tell themselves, “Oh, me? Gamer? No way. I’m not so pathetic... I LIVE in Second Life.”

Snobs. That’s honestly the word that comes to mind when I look at this issue from some people’s description. It honestly just sounds like older folks who don’t want to be labeled gamers for whatever preconceived negative notion that is in their head.

Yup. I said it. Go ahead and burn me at the stake.

This is a two-fold question, inspired by the profile of a player I came across a couple of days ago.  Without naming the player, here's what he wrote in his profile...

So I have a couple of questions. First, is this worthy of an AR?

Second, if you bought something from a player and then later discovered that they had something like this in their profile, would you delete what you bought from them? I just did exactly that, can't tell if over-reacting or not. But that kind of attitude makes me ... want to write words that would not be allowed here.

    1. Maybe it's worth of an AR, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it. It just sounds sort of trollish -- but in a passive kind of way. They aren't actively trolling a sim. YOU have to click their profile to even see it.

    2. I wouldn't delete it. This is a virtual world/game. There are people of all sorts here, some who like to troll.Would I buy from in the future? Probably not. They'd have to have really amazing quality stuff for me to go out of my way to buy from them again. But I wouldn't delete my little pixel merch just because they have a trollish profile.

Actually one would think any sane person who tries to hold on to mainland ownership would plan ahead more than a month... You don't have to be a "power player" to do the math.

I agree with this. I'm not a 'power player,' -- whatever that is -- I just don't like paying more than I have to for a product.

  9. I'm Naly. I'm 31/F/New Orleans USA ... and old enough that I still think a/s/l is still used. In world, I enjoy decorating, shopping, and some more decorating. I enjoy video games in general -- especially RPGs. I'm currently playing the new God of War with my husband (we like to play single player games together -- more interactive than just watching TV shows together). It's actually pretty darn good -- and God of War has never been my scene. I guess there's a reason it's winning awards. I also enjoy hula hoop dancing. Yup. It's a thing and I do it. You can look it up on Youtube if you are wondering what I'm talking about. I enjoy reading -- usually fantasy series. I'm rereading Iron Druid at the moment because apparently two books have come out since I last read it.

Oh... and I like cats... a lot.

Foreverland has some lovely qualities, and it was built with passion. Visitors enjoy it. It's not up to the highest technical standards but that should not be the only criteria for a worthwhile build in SL.

Thanks for pointing this out. I think it's low hanging fruit to jump on criticizing someone's creativity. No matter what someone shares with the world, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. That's okay.

sadly a lot of mesh creations breaks on 2

Which is why you should set it to 2 -- so that you can be more discriminate in the items you choose to place on your land. You should be trying to make a place that is beautiful for the average SL user (if you are genuine in your OP) -- and I'm guessing the average SL user is set to 2.

  12. Why not simply suggest lower land costs for everyone? That seems like the simplest answer. Because if we do it your way, that requires some sort of regulation and someone has to take the time to verify if people are following rules.

You would want Linden Labs to receive less money while they pay more money to have people implement this new rule.

  13. I switch up my houses regularly. I like to make new scenes to log into. I know all too well the feeling of needing the 'perfect' house for the mood.

I'm currently digging this open living kind of option at the moment. The trick is trying to make sure I get decent LOD objects since so many can be seen by my neighbors. Capture_001.thumb.png.10cd205a9b7cb692feff2891012f0135.png

SL's mesh LoD system isn't my speciality as I don't bother making mesh for SL, but...

From other LoD systems I've seen and used when modding games in the past, typically object radius is used in the calcs to decide WHEN to swap LoD's based on object size...

A 1200 ft battleship will retain it's base LoD 0 at much greater range than a 6 inch long smartphone...

There is a friend who wears an unrigged mesh hair, that's linked to an invisible root prim by the maker. If you resize the  .25 x .25 x .5 m box down to a 5 cm cube hidden inside your head, SL treats the mesh child prim as being really small, and it LoD's out of sight all too quickly, and you look bald...

Resizing the prim to .5 x.5x.75 and then using the two slice parameters to shrink it to an unseen fraction of a prim, increases the "object radius", so the mesh hair doesn't vanish...

This might explain something I saw at an event the other day. It was a simple candle, but a sign said that it had been resized for better viewing (it was quite large for a candle). What I took that to mean was that if I kept it at a reasonable size for the candle, it might actually break up easier.

  15. I'm not sure how long this information has been here, but I only just noticed it. Can anyone tell me if someone has written a tutorial or wiki explaining this information to a total noob? I run my LOD at 4 usually, but when I'm shopping, I lower it to 2 so I can see if things are going to break up easily for others.

    1. What is the triangle information about?

    2. What is the Object radius and is there a good or bad range?

    3. What is LOD Swap? Does LL refer to Linden View and FS to Firestorm?

    4. What is the key information I should be taking from this when making purchases?

I'm sorry... if this is totally old news, but this is pretty cool

^ Doesn't come up in google search for me. Why you where even searching in the first place, and decided to copy and paste it I don't know.

Why was I searching? Because as a prospective client, I Google ANYONE I'm considering paying.

Google search "Second Life Tranquility Therapy Clinic."

Screen shots will not come up on google search like that. That person was also turned down due to not having enough experience aswell. Not willing to show that though. Also you didn't have my permission to share that IM. That's been done as revenge for being turned down.

The blog post came up, not the screenshot.
