Marly Tomsen? I wanted to point you to them, as I had good experience with them, but I found the Junlong office being gone
and all land had either changed owners or was abandoned to Governor Linden.

Nevertheless, try out Ravenglass rentals, I've been there for the past few months and had no problems.
The main office is here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Alston/114/23/37

Aside from the fact, that you compare apples with cars in your first post, there is a problem:
    Revenue & Earnings.
Land is the main source of income for the lab and according to their last reports,
only 10% of the revenue are indeed earnings.
In other words: Your proposal would put the lab into the red. And you don't want that to happen.
As that would lead to a fast way down the drain.

What I do see as possible without jeopardizing the earnings too much would be rebates for educational
institutions, lowering the setup fees for private estates and running special offers from time to time.

  3. Clocktower you say?

I guess, I know that one. Rented from that one some time ago, absolutely reliable and good friendly service.
But, the pricing is seriously off. Takes usually 1.9 to 2 L$ per prim per week for land, that usually would  go
with other landlords for 1.1 to 1.3 L$ per prim per week. The result is evident, you see the clock towers and circular
logos all over the place. At nearly 2 L$ the land just isn't moving. Some parcels are real good, but similar parcels
    are cheaper elsewhere too.

  4. Had this today again. Zoomed the Minimap in and managed to place the mousepointer on the green dot while moving.
It showed my name. so it is a glitch.

Then during another session, the old avatar folding in half bug reappeared. That one was gone after a relog.

And some region crossings are quite buggy again. The double crossing involving Malchior, Gorynych and Laidly Worm
is currently deadly for automated vehicles. Passengers are thrown off.

  5. These pods (Yavascript Tourpods) are fully waypoint controlled, stay always ON the road and if one gets stuck,
the owner does remove them. These pods are indeed designed to have a low impact on region resources.
Because of the good programming, they get rarely stuck and don't pile up on region borders.
Oh, and the pods do convert to an appropriate design, depending where the pod just is.
( Railcar on the railway, boat on the water.)

Melita Magic wrote: "There is some thing that goes by my SL house (or used to - haven't looked lately) every few seconds. It looks like a grey pod."

Every few seconds? That doesn't sound like a Yavascript-pod. The operator of the Yavascript-Pods keeps the number
relatively low (usually not more than one pod per route per 30 minutes) to prevent them becoming a nuisance.
However, it could happen, that two pods on different routes follow each other on a shared part of road.

Dillon Levenque wrote: "I suppose in a historically themed sim the science fiction aspect—a gravity defying pod—would be considered an eyesore, but anyone who builds a historically themed sim athwart a Linden Road should be prepared for that."

Exactly, besides, I haven't found a themed region on the mainland at all. These pods only use Linden roads on the mainland.

  6. EA got the golden poo again:

    http://consumerist.com/2013/04/09/ea-makes-worst-company-in-america-history-wins-title-for-second-year-in-a-row/

I do know, that the result is a simple vote count, but nevertheless, I disagree with the result.
Why, you may ask? When a games company screws up, the worst that could happen is fifty bucks down the drain.
And it is software, so any issues are fixable. However, when a bank screws up - and the Bank of America screwed up a lot -
then the result is devastating for the victim. Many homeowners lost their home in the robosigning scandal,
BoA foreclosed homes they had absolutely no rights over, then the zombie account issue, stuff that is unthinkable here in
Germany. If a customer over here closes a bank account, the account IS closed and STAYS closed. Every order coming
in after closure date is denied. 100%.

  7. Lucretia Brandenburg wrote: "Personally, I recommend that everyone turn build and object entry both off, then you don't have to fuss with autoreturn."

    Wrong!. Why?
Blocking Object Entry works only reliably for slow moving objects. There are griefer objects out there, that shoot itself into
parcels with Object Entry turned off. Another tactic is to move an object very slowly into the blocked parcel,
using calculation- and rounding errors to get stuck at the border of the parcel (the Boulito-Method).
In all cases, only Autoreturn takes care of that.

That's why it is important to activate Autoreturn with the shortest time possible IN Addition to any other blocking.

  8. And turn off Build for Everyone!

    Why?

    That's why:

    plywood1.jpg

    plywood2.jpg

    plywood3.jpg

The last one is a single small 16sqm parcel with Build enabled for everyone and Autoreturn set to 0.
Btw., the Goonsquad-Griefer abused parcels with similar settings to drop his junk.

The junk is visible on the world map as well.

    So again:

    Please activate Autoreturn!

And set Build to Group or Owner.

If you don't have the permissions,
ask your Landlord. But please do it.

Really, it isn't that hard. Thank you.

  9. One hour? Ok, product delivery should be nearly instantaneous, however, the SL-delivery system acts up regularly.

    Here is what to do:
1.: Wait a bit, deliveries can take up to 48 hours.

2.: Check your Trash folder in the inventory.

3.: Avoid 'Busy'-mode at all cost. Items coming in during being 'Busy' go straight into trash.

4.: Check your transaction logs here: https://secondlife.com/my/account/transactions.php?lang=en-US
If a delivery fails, in most cases you are credited back. That shows up in the log as well.
If the payment hasn't returned, contact the vendor and include the details from the transaction log.
Take timezones in account, most people work during their daytime.

5.: If the vendor has an inworld presence, check if there is a redelivery terminal. If there is one, try it.

6.: And finally, don't write one star reviews on the marketplace, Save them, if the product is really awful
or the seller fobs you off or becomes nasty.

The problem is, Tier is the main income for the Lab. About 10% of the revenue are actually earnings, the rest is costs.
And cost is not only the hosting, it is support, it is development, it is all the stuff about SL, that is not inworld, etc.
There is not very much wiggle room. What I would like to see is a rebate for educational institutions and certain community
projects. The latter tied to clear concise conditions to prevent it from becoming a ploy to get cheap land.
Seriously, a decent sized commercial entity can easily afford the 200 bucks for a mainland region or 300 for a private estate.
Plus, as that is cost counted against their revenue, they could get tax breaks for that. LL doesn't need to subsidize on top of that.

  11. Tari Landar wrote: "lt has died, is dying, and will die....for those that allow it."

Well, LL can do its part to prevent SL from dying:

1.: Act on ALL Abuse Reports in less than 2 hours.

2.: Crack down hard on griefers.

3.: Clean out and police the Welcome Areas. the depravity going on in e.g. Ahern is absolutely unacceptable.

  12. Qie Niangao wrote: "Second, I do not want to force auto-return on all land."
But exactly that needs to happen. If someone sets Autoreturn to 0, it is not switched off, but instead set to 15 seconds.
If someone really needs Autoreturn to be switched off, then that should only be possible through a support ticket.
And the maximum time should be limited to a few hours, not 999999 minutes, close to two years.

Qie Niangao wrote: "Third, auto-return does not completely prevent the problem of griefer spam objects."
That is true, but it would take care of atleast 90% of the unwanted junk, leaving the AR-team with more time
to aggressively pursue the real hardcore griefers like these Goonsquad-terrorists.

  13. The Firestorm-team have setup a help/intro-Island too, where a newbie learns to operate the viewer.
At the end of the intro-tour, there is a gallery with useful start locations, e.g. NCI, White Tiger, Caledon, etc.
What is completely absent from this gallery: The LL-welcome areas. And I guess for a good reason.
From time to time I visit the Ahern-welcome area to take a look at the depravity, that is going on there.
You don't want to expose a newbie to that.

    You start here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Phoenix%20Firestorm%20Support/48/161/25

This is, what a newbie should be presented with. Not those griefer-laden welcome areas.

  14. I was in Keswick an hour ago, reported a massive attack, then I found another attack in Scenic Hills, just wanted to report that
one too, when it suddenly disappeared. Returned to Keswick, the junk was gone there as well.

So the AR-team does removes griefer junk, but it seems, only if it is a massive attack and a flood of reports comes in.

Griefers never clean up after themselves. If griefer junk disappears, it is either removed by the landowner or by LL.
When we had a few 'Dick Dish'-Particle-Spammers in Patagonia, the AR-team did nothing. the landowners removed them.
The Spammers in Rubi and Lida had only been removed during the great cleanup, after the Goonsquad-griefer had added his junk.

  15. When it comes to shapes, this is already possible, however, what makes a character realistic is texture and reflections.
And that's, where the current SL-viewer technology seriously lacks in capabilities.
The lab is working on technology to improve the viewer in that department, the keyword here is: "Materials Processing".
Inara Pey has some articles about this on her blog:

    http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2012/08/22/materials-processing-the-what-why-and-where/
    http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2013/01/31/materials-processing-more-sneak-peeks/

This technology allows realistic reflections on textured surfaces, so skin could look like it does in the posted pic.
Since resources are limited, especially after the last big round of layoffs, I don't know, when this will go live in any form.

Another technology necessary is the Mesh Deformer, according to Inara, no resources have been assigned to that project
yet, so noone knows, when something comes out of that.

However, there are much more basic bugs to fix first: Translucent earth.

    groundproblem.jpg

Since when goes light through solid ground/brick walls, etc.
Shadows do work with Sun & Moon, but when it comes to local lights, the whole thing fails miserably.
A simple light block, that prevents light going through non-transparent solid walls should be easily to implement,
even in basic shaders without much additional CPU/GPU-load.

  16. Generally, if a script sends message boxes, it doesn't matter, where in a region this object is, it could be at 4000m.
It always can send message boxes to every avatar inside the region. Firestorms Area Search can help here, finding the junk.

Local chat is a different beast, the 5/20/100m range is always the same, region border between you and the object or not.

Btw, the Goonsquad-Junk I have seen on Heterocera is gone.
Thanks go out to the AR-Team.
