I'd love to hear from any hardened gacha players and how it's ruined their life.

It's not ruined my life, but I have been a whale before (~1000 USD dropped on blind boxes in videogames) until I realized how wasteful it was. Never again. Swore it off entirely. Even for cheap ones in SL.

Is it still gacha / gambling if you buy tokens (with random extra steps) to then trade for products?

it wouldn't be gacha, but it would be gambling, and probably be restricted to skill gaming regions if allowed at all.

omg nooo The Arcade and Epiphany and other gacha events will cease to exist :(

I would love it if this means The Arcade would be filled with actual boardwalk carnival games for product rewards instead of just random pulls.

Which makes me wonder, are "point redemption booth" style things permitted, since you are choosing what to spend points on?

Was there any consideration to just banning "complete gatcha" where you needed to successfully collect multiple items to get a product?

That's included in this umbrella-ban, but I don't think those were particularly the reason for the ban in the first place, though. But those are far worse yeah.

Where do we draw the line on this?

The line is well defined, per the blog post ""as a result of payment"

You don't pay lucky chairs, so they are allowed. You don't pay random prize givers, so they are allowed. No pay means no rule. No rule means no ban.

@Patch Linden If a creator has a giveaway gacha machine that gives items out for free, is this still a acceptable method of items being given out, even though those items have difference chances of being gotten.

The key words in the blog post were "as a result of payment"

If no payment is involved, there is no rule involved. Do what you want.

With gachas being eliminated, does this mean no copy items can't be sold in general? And how is LL going to regulate the estimated and heavy price gouging that's going to occur as a result?

There's nothing wrong with selling things that are no-copy. Including gatcha items you may have bought in the past.

You just can't products out randomly.

In a nutshell, when someone buys something, they need to be 100% sure what they are getting. No dice roll, no chance, no risk.

  8. On one hand, I'm happy to see this go. I just want to buy exactly what I want and not have to gamble.

On the other hand, Gachas had some of the highest quality content I've seen that rarely ever was spotted elsewhere on the grid or marketplace.

Gachas always had a noticeable quality bump. I really hope that creative effort is properly redirected.

I could go on and on but what's the point. If what you say is true in the way you claim, you would have long ago fled SL and become preoccupied with Roblox. Yet you remain dithering on the forums.

I have friends who have left SL in reality, only keeping a bare presence, who moved on to Sinespace, Open Sim, Uplands, whatever for a whole set of reasons and then found those other places to be better according to their criticism, and they put their money where their mouth is -- in those other places. So of course you're free to do the same.

It does not follow that one needs to leave one virtual world in order to enjoy another?

Personally I find my "second life" extends across many platforms. Each platform has it's own purpose and fulfillment. If you can get everything you need from a single company, that's wonderful! But there is no need for loyalty.

Oh would you look at that, it says you can only change your display name once per week, but apparently you can revert your display name and then pick another one more frequently than that. Is being able to change your display name more often a hidden premium perk or something?

ETA: Seems like reverting your name doesn't count as a name-change (for the 1 per week rule), but un-reverting it does.

    Nah, I'm not premium.
You can only set a custom display name once per week.
You can reset it at any time, including immediately, if you want to.
You won't be able to pick a new one for a week, but you're never stuck with a display name. It can always be removed.

If the avatar has ever used a display name, that creates the "." between the first and last names.  No idea why it does that.  If your avatar never created a display name, that is why there is no "."

This isn't the case. I have never created a Display name, since the feature was first created. My username is still adeon.writer

They were created regardless of your use of display names.

In reality, the mystery is very simple: Usernames can't have spaces. If your account name has a space, the username will use a period instead.

Nametag logic works in that if your current display name matches your username (except for the period being a space) then the second line will be omitted on the nametag. Otherwise, if they don't currently match, it will show your username in a second line.

adeon.writer + "Adeon Writer" = no second line, because they match
johnsmith + "John Smith" = has a second line, because they don't match

Yep,.since I changed my name and haven't used a display name yet, I'm just Rowan Amore with no second line.  I hadn't even paid attention.  I'm legacy again!!! 😅

I hate to break it to you, but your username is still "rowan.amore". Your display name is "Rowan Amore", which matches, so the second line is hidden on the nametag. But the username is still there when checking via script or using URL's: https://my.secondlife.com/rowan.amore

The good news is you are still free to create a display name. While using a display name, the rowan.amore will appear below your nametag again. But it will vanish if you put your display name back to "Rowan Amore".

  12. For clarity's sake, making SL more optimized is the opposite of making it require a better computer.
Causing it to require a better rig would due to making it less optimized.

If Second Life were to be re-created in a modern game engine, it would run on older computers better, not worse.

The difficulty would be the massive work expense and difficulty in making sure existing content is not broken. I can't even begin to fathom such an impossible feat.

But I'd be all for that initiative; as long as the understanding is there for what Second Life is and what people want to use it for.
That understanding was not present with the creation of Sansar. I don't know if Sansar was truely not meant to replace SL, or those creating it just didn't understand SL users. Either way, improving Second Life requires those doing the improving actually understand why people use Second Life in 2021 instead of alternatives.

Otherwise you won't like what they make.

Not everyone is as technology resistant as you seem to be.

This is true, but on the other side of the coin: More SL'ers are technology resistant than you are assuming.

But I agree with Silent Mistwalker: Second Life truly is better off left alone. And I think that's currently the plan. There is a niche here that isn't and won't be filled anywhere else, not even by a metaverse.

It's a touchy subject because Second Life was originally envisioned to be a metaverse. But that's not what it evolved to be, that's not why people still use it today. Linden Lab's best move is to make SL better for what people currently use it for. And that use isn't as a metaverse.

  14. You can have systems pay out L$ as much as you want - without a license.
You can also have systems that pay in L$ as much as you want - also without a license.

The restrictions come in on systems or connections of systems that effectively do both at once: Entice people to pay in to for the chance of being paid out even more, and making a profit.

That's when you fall under gaming/gambling and must comply with the skill gaming policy.

  15. The People here on the forum vs people on in world, it’s like night and day. I don’t know what it is, people in world just aren’t up for random conversation. People in Second Life are some of the shyest folk I’ve ever met. I’ve actually given up in those respects. Its hard especially if you are accustomed to other social platforms where conversation and socializing is the entire point of why people are there.

But with Second Life, that’s not always true. Some people are just logged in to ogle there own avatars, and any random IM’s are not a conversation they’re up for.

  16. My biggest problem with the modern viewers is that they all just have way too much chrome. I want to see the world, not the viewer. Everything from the title bars to the toolbar buttons are just always in the way, they take up so much space, ever since the original 2.0 update and it was never addressed. Unless you use an older 1.x third party viewer you just never got your real-estate back.

  17. I am guilty of not even posting on the forums, but rather just lurking on them. :)

Most of my use of second life involves helping people with scripting via discord IM's. Scripting is the one thing this platform has over any others, it's the most creativity-empowering feature it has. Sadly, I feel like I've got lots of technical knowledge, but no actual creativity. So what I find most enjoyable is assisting people who are creative but might not have the technical knowledge.

It turns out you don't have to log in very much in order to do that. You can type up and send code anywhere to help people. Even via offline IM's.

I would log in, but I have a hard time finding  active people with similar interests. I'm a really talkative guy (with my voice, not my fingers) at that's pretty rare to find in Second Life.
