  1. I never saw a 20% increase either but that was a couple years ago and I am more proficient at tweaking windows than Linux so maybe that makes a difference. Also in Windows I run SL in a RamDisk which I do not know how to do in Linux so maybe that accounts for the difference. I did notice YouTube and the browser runs a lot smoother in Linux.

  2. SL 3x faster in Linux? I never experienced any increase in performance but that was a couple years ago. Maybe your AMD cpu benefited in Linux and your Windows wasn't optimized for SL? Windows can throttle the video card when using SL (in the past but seems to be recognized as a game now) unless you use a gaming profile in the Nvidia Control Panel. Also the cpus can be parked sometimes if not recognized as a game. I had both those issues.

Disabling cores. That's a neat trick. Be interesting to see if it's a performance hit.

    cheers

  3. The problem with this statement is that even a GTX 670 will crank high GPU usage when high settings are enabled so possibly there is no video card that's not going to be a bottleneck for SL? If I limit my fps using a frame limiter to 30fps the GPU usage goes way down and temps lower significantly. I think I can run smoother at higher settings as well. This is true since SL runs 100-200 fps on my system otherwise which is not useful to me. 60 fps is the max I would need.

  4. Actually IMHO overkill will be required since the fps will go down radically when around a lot of avatars and depends on the SIM also. You don't need to render over 30 fps so you can frame limit using a game profile with MSI Afterburner. But then you have enough overhead for other situations. GTX 460 is a good cheap option. Their selection will depend on whether they are just upgrading the video card and/or other hardware. Also depends on what you get up to in SL. Some professions need more hardware.

  6. Making a demo and posting to YouTube would be a good idea so people can listen and see if your voice is what they want for their production and how good your mic is etc. Try acting out a a few genres? Of course be prepared to do it for free since most Film makers get paid nothing and usually are out of pocket for any film.

  7. Change the viewer window size to 1280x720 and record at 25 or 30 fps. Make sure you keep the same parameters during editing and when you render it. Changing fps and frame size during this process can introduce jerkiness and produce a low quality render. If your hardware can handle 1920x1080 @30 fps then try that but the smaller the viewer window the more fps you will have to prevent lag. The issue with your video is it's a low resolution.

  8. Not in SONY Vegas it doesn't. You can edit them seperately and ungroup them easily. And FRAPS now can record to a single file although I don't recommend that since if you record for an hour and crash possibly you just lost all that info. Also FRAPS has a buffer now so you don't miss the beginning of an event.

  9. I had a Athlon x2 4200 2.2ghz  and 9800GT  vid card got  40-200 fps on High with AA and AF disabled with 2GB RAM. Using TinyXP so maybe that was part of the performance difference? SL and SL cache installed on RamDisk and OS partitioned on a seperate drive from swap file. It all adds up. Used to rez fast too. Cpu was about 50%.

  10. You might want to upgrade the vid card before getting a 3D mouse? That is horrible fps on an i7. You should be able to get a Nvidia GTX 460 for ablut the same price as the mouse. What settings are yu using at 12 fps?  With Ultra I can get up to 100 fps with DoF and shadows enabled depending on where I am. Up to 300 fps without. i checked the Passmark benchmarks for your card and it is sadly lacking. A 9800GT got a score of 722 and your card was 181. A GTX 460 got 2,673.

  11. Well someone posted today and I got 3 emails from this posting so apparently some people still have an issue? Not everyone upgrades their video drivers and a lot of people don't even know what you would be talking about. I know people don't even know what an oil change is and why they should have had one 3 years ago...lol. I knew one guy 50 yrs old putting 100% radiator fluid into company vehicles (10 LIMOS). To this day still beleives he's right...lol. Needless to say to of the Limo buses blew gaskets before being a year old multiple times.

  12. Did you make a game profile in the Nvidia Control Panel for your viewer? After you upgrade your drivers I would try that. On my machine it will run the viewer at adaptive power settings and I will get a lot less fps and performance. If you make a game profile and set power management to "prefer maximum power" you may get higher fps and performance. There are other settings you may wish to change like AA and AF, Vsync etc.

  13. I know exactly what you are refering to. It's an issue with the drivers and your video card and i think the game involved also. So the best solution is upgrading to the latest Nvidia video driver and hopefully it's been fixed for you. I had this happen with 2 different video cards (GTX 460 and a GTX 670). Which video card are you using? My issue was months ago and has been fixed I assume with the driver and/or SL since I don't have the issue anymore. Is your video card overclocked? That was one of the issues with my latest video card and my GTX 460 wa also Factory Overclocked.
