  1. Would genuinely intelligent people want to be part of the intelligentsia? The whole thing seems a little snobby, even pretentious to me, but I'm British and we're neurotically fine-tuned to these things.

But would someone like Albert Einstein have thought of himself as part of the intelligentsia? I suspect he was too humble and grounded, which are themselves markers of intelligence, IMHO.

Then again, I'm dumb as anything so I should probably move right along.

  2. SL will run on any of the new Macs, but clearly the more cores, RAM etc you have, the faster and better the performance. I use an M1 Mac Mini, which is lower spec, and SL runs well most of the time. But... when I go to crowded sims, things get swirly.

You need to watch out for 'thermal throttle' - this is how macs these days control heat, by using software to cool the machine down. How can that work? A thing called 'kernal_task' fires up and seizes control of all the CPU activity, locking you out of your app until the system has cooled down a bit. Or a lot.

There is a way around this - which is to increase the fan speed and so deliver better cooling. There are apps which enable this, such 'TG Pro' and 'Mac fans control'. (Or it might be 'Macs fan control'. Not sure).

The moral of the tale - tried to avoid getting a machine which has no fan at all. Which rules out the Macbook Air, for one.

(By the way, this should probably be moved to the Technology section.)

  3. Gavin, turning off virtual private relay, and relogging, solves the problem. Not just for me but others too. The original poster is asking for help and I think my answer might help him. He should try it, it takes moments, it's very easy to check. There's no harm done. I am allowed to share my experience to help someone else. Your attempts to silence me are close to trolling.

I can't see how this has possibly anything to do with Monterey 'virtual private relay'

But virtual private relay does mess with SL, makes it impossible to rez and do anything much, and this is true whether you can 'see it' or not. I'm not the only one who has experienced this - others have confirmed it here it this forum.

It may not happen if you're not using a VPN at the same time, I can't be sure.

Basically, virtual private relay is interfering with the network connection.

Try it for yourself. Turn it on, ideally with a VPN and see what happens.

Most of the time I can't move or the graphics has random stuff that it loads or not loads.

It sounds to me as if you might have 'virtual private relay' turned on. This is a beta feature on Monterey MacOS designed to protect your safari browsing, but it also messes badly, badly with SL, especially if you are also running a VPN. If you are running 'virtual private relay' try turning it off to see if it solves the problem:

Open System Preferences - at the top is your MacOS user name and pic, and top right is 'Apple ID'. Click on that, and find 'private relay' in the list to the right. If it's checked, uncheck it.

  6. I would say, to be safe, have a will even if it's homemade, but witnessed properly that says everything goes to so-and-so.

In addition, make sure the person taking over the account has all the login details and access to the email used. They will need to change that email, change the payment details following the death. (Not advisable to go on using bank accounts of people who are deceased. Banks need to be informed immediately and take these kinds of discrepancies seriously.)

That way, the surviving person can simply take over the avatar (polite to their friends know something important has changed), and if ever challenged by LL can show them the will and explain what has happened.

Probably still against TOS though, unless you follow the instructions on that page linked to above:

How do I bequeath my Second Life account and its assets in the event of my real life death?

In your will, you must include the legal (real life) name of the person who you want to inherit your Second Life account and assets in the event of your death.

  7. Jordon, try checking to see if a process called 'kernel task' is running and taking control of the most of the CPU availability. It's a MacOS function, designed to 'capture' all the processing power when the machine is getting overloaded or too hot, as a way of protecting the hardware from excessive use.

It's legit, but really, really annoying.

It might be that which is also interfering with your wifi. That might seem illogical, but kernel task manages to interfere with just about everything.

It would be interesting to know if that's the case - but if it is, then there's not a whole lot to be done about it. You could try installing apps such as MacFans or TG Pro which allow you to increase the fan speed. I find this helps a little in keeping kernel task under control.

  8. Call the police? I've been threatened in RL by an RL person whose name and address I could provide to the police but they still did nothing. They are too busy, don't care, don't have the time (I'm in the UK, so your mileage may vary). I can't imagine the RL police even opening a report on this. You were threatened in a game? They will laugh at you, but probably not to your face.

Now, if someone actually hurts you in RL, you might get somewhere. Bit late by then of course.

My only advice is to never tell anyone anything about your RL details. In a world of social media, even the tiniest morsels of information act like breadcrumbs. I once had a good friend ask me the name of my RL dog. I nearly told him, but apologised and said 'no'. If someone knows roughly where you live (country, region) and just a bit of info like that, maybe breed of dog as well, they might easily find a photo of you on Insta or Fakebook or the like, and you may not even know the picture exists. Could be taken and posted by friends or neighbours.

I agree with the advice to blank them relentlessly until they get bored, grow up or die.

Another option is to hunt down their RL identity, just in case. But that might be against TOS.

If everyone visiting an event immediately fired it up rather than camming about, well then LL might be freaking out.

That explains a lot - because that is exactly what is happening at many events, it would seem, and I'm as guilty as anyone. I never realised area search was putting such a load on region resources. Thanks for explaining this.

One question - does this only happen when you open up area search and are actively searching - or is it happening silently in the background all the time?

  11. Thanks Jenna - I have hundreds of hair options in my inventory, possibly thousands, and I doubt a single one of them is mod enabled. The ones I want to wear for the photo shoots certainly aren't. It's a shame makers have to cripple their own products and make them much less useful though I do understand their need to protect their IP.

I'll take a look at your DoF info, thanks for the link.

  12. Alpha hair tends to 'glitch' against a light background - the hair and the background become all messed up. It's bearable under normal conditions. But when I turn on Depth of Field in order to take a portrait shot, the glitching becomes greatly magnified to the point of ruining the photo. While it might be possible to blur it out in a photo editing app, I feel it would be better to take a cleaner shot to start with.

So, does anyone have any tips for how to mitigate this issue? (Turning off DoF works, but I'd like to be able to use it if at all possible).

I'm no expert in using DoF, currently experimenting having read an article in the latest edition of Focus magazine (an in-world SL publication). My settings are taken from recommendations in the article (the rest are default) and I'm using Firestorm:

    View angle: 0.783

    FOV: 22.9

    FOC: 50

    CoC (circle of confusion): 29.0

    f-number 5.6

I hope you can see the glitching effect on the attached photo. Let me know if not and I'll set up one that's more 'extreme'.

    Any solutions?
