Second life isn't working for me

I select the viewer and as it goes through its normal startup routine, it stops at initializng vfs and i get a message saying it is not responding. it has been doing this since friday. I have tried reninstalling the viewer and it does not work. what do i do?

Clear your cache manually from outside SL >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_cache_clear .  Thos instructions are written for Firestorm users, but the process is exactly the same for any viewer.

It has nothing to do with your browser, so you can use IE, Chrome, Firefox, or whatever. You aren't even using the browser to do this. Manually clearing cache almost always takes care of a VFS problem. If it didn't work for you, it's time to clear your personal settings. See >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clearing_settings

So is there an easier way to clear the cache?

Nope. Or ... yes, but not if you want to completely clear cache. Doing it with the "clear cache" button in Preferences doesn't wipe the roaming files. The only way to get at those is to use the "manual" procedure I pointed you to. And the only way to clear your personal settings, as I described in my last note, is to use the procedure that I referenced there. Personal settings are not wiped out even if you reinstall your entire viewer, so if they are borked the new installation will be too. Each of those sets of instructions are about as clear as they can possibly be. If you;re having trouble following them, find a friend.

I tried deleting cache or whatever.. ^.^ and I tried reinstalling the SL viewer. It still didn't work

You shouldn't have needed to re-install the viewer. If you did it anyway, though, did you do it the right way? If not, you probably still have some of the hidden files from your first installation and hey can be messing up the new installation. In the future, if you get the VFS error message, all you should have to do is a manual clearing of your cache (not just hitting the Clear Cache button in Preferences).
