There are several things you can try.

The first is to reset your graphics settings to the defaults. You can do that specifically or do a clean install. Second Life Clean Install

To specifically reset the graphics settings (Vista/Win7) navigate to:
C:\Users\[win_login_ID]\AppsData\Roaming\Secondlife\user_settings\

Find the file settings.xml and rename or delete it. If you use more than one viewer, there will be other settings[version].xml files. They are for the other versions. Each viewer has its own settings file; Beta, Developement, Developer, and etc. all have unique settings file names.

Once the file is deleted/renamed, open the viewer and try to login.

If the viewer locks up, get out of it. Restart it but do NOT login. Open Preferences and set your graphics settings to LOW. Now try logging in. Once you are in you can set the settings to a higher level.

There are a number of other things that can cause the problem. To give you better advice we need to know more about your computer. Whenever you ask for technical help start the viewer, you don't have to login, click Help->About and copy paste the info into your post.

We are assuming you have been able to login in the past. If not, let us know.
