You can upload the picture yes.

But going by the thread title..you want to be able to take a picture of something in RL, then upload that picture into SL and let SL turn it into an object again? You don't honestly think the entire 3D building community works like monks to turn RL into something virtual just because it's fun?

The moment when uploading a picture results into a 3d virtual object, and at a reasonable price, is the exact moment 3d modelling is no longer neccecary. It would also have to be a series of pictures, not just one.

As Kwak said, you can certainly upload the photo, as an image.  But it won't automatically turn itself into a 3D model.  It will just be a picture.

There is software that can do that, such as Autodesk's 123D Catch (currently in public beta), 3DSOM Pro, and a few others.  Each require several photos from multiple angles, and none of them work the way you probably think they do.  The results are far from perfect, and are not directly suitable for use in a realtime simulation like SL.   At best, they make for somewhat decent reference templates, upon which properly made 3D models can be built, by a human artist.

(not just animation through the AutoCAD)

I'm not sure what you mean by this.  AutoCAD is not an animation program.  It's an architrctural/industrial design program.  It can only do very simplistic animations, such as flying a camera through a scene, to showcase a building design.

Even if it were a proper animation program, though, that still wouldn't help you get your desk into SL (or anywhere else).  Animation and modeling are two entirely different things.

If you want to design a desk in AutoCAD, and then export it as a surface model, you could then import the model to SL (with a bit of work).  But again, that has nothing to do with animation.
