do mesh objects still need to be phantom ?

No, they don't need to be phantom, and never have needed that. You're thinking of a limitation of sculpted prims, whose bounding box often was very different from its percieved surface shape. 

I've uploaded a Mesh archway and doors from the examples in the WIKI, and they are nice and solid, with a colision envelope that matches the surface countors.
