Linden Lab introduced a beta system in April 2011 allowing residents to pay in local currency. It was limited to a selected number of residents. It may have worked fine for some but for others like me it caused quite severe problems.

It was to be rolled out to all residents in late July but to be honest I'm not sure if it was and it is possible Linden Lab will eventually change back to the former system at some time in the future anyway.

Even when on the local payment system, the premium fees on your Dashboard still appear in USD. The conversion to Euro is done by the local payment provider depending on the prevailing conversion rate so if you pay by credit card for example, the debit will appear in Euro on your statement whereas before you would see it in USD and the Euro conversion. You save the fees which your credit card company would have charged but does this saving warrant your credit card details being in the hands of the third party local payment provider 888/Dragonfish, an online gaming company.
