Question

I've been away from SL for around a year due to rl stuff I had to deal with. On returning I have found an awful lot of my inventory missing, can't give exact numbers, just know I have an awful lot of empty folders.

I have tried the usual, clearing cache and restarting and nothing helped

Please please please someone help or point me in the direction of somewhere to ask someone who can help.

This really wasn't the welcome back to SL I was expecting

Aside from the usual recovery steps which you may already have tried, uninstalling your old viewer with ALL the cache and support folders and installing a new viewer would be the next step. I would strongly suggest that you do NOT install the current V 3 default viewer.  It is beyond buggy. Try one from the third party list, possibly a V1 version or even the old 1.23 Linden viewer which is still (for the moment) supported.

The bad news is that while REAL disappearing inventory is not on the list referenced by Emma *wink*, it does occur. It  has happened to many folks, including me twice. A few months back I had the same problem that you appear to have. My "House and Garden" folder was completely empty. My "Belts" folder completely disappeared (a couple of levels down on my folder tree) and I lost a backup folder of goods. Sadly no matter what steps I took they did not return. This was immediately after a database changeover by Linden Labs. So your inventory was certainly in that timeline and other database work.

The bottom line is that they could be truly gone. The more philosophical way to look at it is that if those items were a year or more old, they were probably getting pretty dated. It may just be time to replace with newer stuff.

I hope you get your inventory back, but if not -- we do survive.
